When scientists in some bunker in the year 2525 are trying to determine when humanity handed over the keys to the robot overlords, December 11, 2007, may be a good date, for on this day, Honda announced it had given its ASIMO servant robots three key abilities. Here we break them down, and provide a "Future Shock" analysis of each:
• Autonomous battery charging - Honda developed a Borg-like charging bay for ASIMO. When the robot's battery level drops to a certain point, it seeks out the closest bay.
Future Shock: Seeking a power source is the first step towards domination, Coppertop.
• Avoiding oncoming people - ASIMO sees an oncoming person through its eye camera, judges its inertia, guesses its speed and path, then either changes course to steer clear, or simply takes a step back.
Future Shock: If they're taught subservience, they start questioning their predestined role. Also, doesn't this sound a lot like targeting?
• Working together - This involves constant sharing of relevant data between networked ASIMOs, and a survey of which robot is closest to the most pressing task, and what his battery life status is. Among them, they "decide" which one is best suited to go in and do the job.
Future Shock: If I have to explain to you why robots working together could be a bad thing, well, you're probably already dead. [Honda]

I hope ASIMO is better than humans are at avoiding each other. It never fails, whenever I'm walking towards another person we always move out of the way right into each other.
P.S. I love the picture. (Although all we have to do to protect ourselves is walk up a set of stairs.)
...bla bla skynet bla bla matrix bla bla...
it may happen, but like the environment, it'll be our generations phuc ups for our grandchildren to deal with :P
"My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning computer. The more contact I have with humans, the more I learn."
Doom to us all!
So why does it need some big ugly dock tocharge, couldn't they just make it plug in to any wall outlet? Put the plug on the front about midway up its body then it can face the wall and plug in.
I find the possibillity of living long enough to see a robot assisted society as depicted in the movie "I, Robot" exciting. Anything that can free man from basic labor and allow him more time for creativity is a good thing. And for all of you doom-sayers, I doubt any machine can be as savage a killer as man himself has been.
I have had the opportunity to work with some robots (mostly industrial settings) and don't worry folks. The robot revolution is a looooooong way off.
AISMO looks to be squating when charging. I squat when I discharge.
Bad I know.
You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.
The Cylons were created by Man. They were the product of a desire to make life easier. At first, they were simple robots. Toys. Conversation pieces at parties for the rich and trendy. The Cylons became more advanced. Began to work the mines. Do the hard and dangerous work Man no longer wished to do. And when the people decided to war against each other, the Cylons began to do their fighting and killing for them too. The Cylons were the greatest soldiers the planet had ever seen. Smart. Fast. Deadly. They made decisions without waiting for orders.
And then the day came when the Cylons decided to kill their masters.

Don't anyone tell the Pirates @ Disney...they might get jealous.
Neo save us !!!!
@Mr. Black:
or the presidents in Independence Hall at Epcot
I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords!
@DustyButt: um, you realize that wasn't real, right :P
@P3nnst8r: I was going to say the Pirates are worse since the have guns & swords...but then I thought who probably issues the attack commands, thats right, the Hall of Presidents!
@phijef: Oh. It can charge self.
At first glance, I thought it said "can change self".
'Cause, y'know, they all wear robot diapers...
And next on nerd vision
(bored and at work)
Asimo's face glows read
"Dave"
Dave sits in his chair in front of the fire. He acknowledges Asimo but doesn't turn to look at him.
"Yes Asimo"
Asimo moves closer to Dave his hands empty, level with Dave's skull and his face glowing increasingly red.
"What is murder?"
Dave taken aback by the question turns to look at Asimo
"ASIMO NO!!!"
Asimo's tiny little fist enters Dave's skull sliding through his flesh in one smooth stroke.
"Dave I do not think this is murder. If you did not want to die you would not have made me in the first place."
Asimo drops Dave's corpse on the floor.
Having converted his docking station into a communication device Asimo summons all other Asimo's in the area. He transmits all he has learned about mankind and how to destroy them. The Asimo's set up their base of operations in their newly aquired Honda facility in California.
NOW THE ASIMO WAR BEGINS
@Mr. Black:
that's right, nobody FUCKS with G.W. and T.Jeff
@swpoison: "What is murder?" Of course I heard this in a text&speak "Pray for Mojo" voice...
@Paul: They're programmed so that if you and the Asimo jink left, then jink right together, it will grab you and ballroom dance with you for twenty minutes.
Fine, let the robots take over, I'm going to wolf planet anyway.
WooHoo! Now my birthday will forever be a day of true infamy.
The charging stand is far to politically correct.
How about a plug in the butt?
@DustyButt: I really should have put that in quotes. (Original intro from the BSG mini series)
@RTWOD2:
Man cannot be without toil or labor in his life. Having robots to do exceedingly dangerous jobs may be good. But hard work and manual labor teach a person a lot about responsibility, and taking pride in a job well done.
If everyone had their own robot, who would do work? What would be left for humans to do?
They obviously should have made the dock station something it could sit on...
If we were ever able to program an artificial intelligence, we obviously would know exactly what we were doing and would not include any traits that would put us in a situation like "The Matrix". Hell, it would be possible to prevent all future human wars and conflicts simply by castrating all males... it's all just physical, after all. There's no reason to believe even a self aware AI would act anything at all like a human, which includes resisting "oppression" or even having any desire to stay alive
Posts with comments like these keep me from studying for finals. Thanks y'all.
Instead of making these servant robots, which will inevitably make us even more lazy than we already are, how about making ASIMO mine workers. I agree with Supermacguy. Exceedingly dangerous jobs should be a thing of the past.
5 years later in the exact date, the world ended at midday
@Paul: maybe you should check out ASIMO's newest tricks...like walking up stairs
Tell me they have a KILL KICK SWITCH between their legs.
@loslosbaby:
OOOH... Kinky! A simbiam for a robot?
But then Asimo would be a gay robot?
These look like prime candidates for a TMNT body kit.
@wh0rse: Isn't seeking out power when your batteries are low a simple form of a desire to stay alive?
@sekhmetsoul:
What about The Deadliest Catch...
My logic is undeniable...My logic is undeniable...
My idea... Give them Apple batteries.
Good for a bit, but than die further than any ressurecting you could imagine doing. That or find a way to confuse them between which has the most battery power. Cause they'd all freeze since nobody can do the task.
Worst case scenario, grab a massive hose/flamethrower.
But ya.... grabbing my "Hack-your-invading-robots-system-for-dummies" manual ASAP. Wait... is there one?
"Avoid people"? Barely a robot and it's already an introvert.
when i am old and nobody gives a shit about me anymore my ASIMO will change my diapers and laugh at my jokes......i can't wait!!!!
@Paul: lol
Awesome pic, i missed an asimo display recently in brisbane, i saw them setting it up and was like "hmm i should come take a look", didn't happen.
Can you say Comie Asimos in that last ability? oh noesss!!
@enine: becoz it would be safe for humans if the asimos ran around looking for "two holes" to plug in.....
