The Land Walker was made by Masaaki Nagumo, measures 11 feet tall, weighs one ton, and sprays bullets from air guns mounted outside the cockpit. Unfortunately they're only sponge bullets, but I bet it'll still hurt like a bitch when you spray your friends with them. We can imagine the doofuses on the show Entourage buying four and riding these around their huge mansion.

Laugh. This thing looks like it is ready to topple over every step it takes.
No thanks. I'll wait for the AT-AT. At least that can step over a curb.
Yeah... Just think of the possibilities with this thing! Imagine sneaking up on some friends and pelting with that ultra-accurate airgun! (please note the use of sarcasm)
My Grandmother can outrun that thing and is more stable on two legs than it is. Admittedly, it can launch a tennis ball faster/harder than she could, but she owns a .45 that can do more damage!! =-D
Lame...it doesn't even walk...it skates!
Well, its settled then.
I now believe in the boogie monster, the tooth fairy, Santa Claus, Ghosts, Aliens, Telepathy, Levitation, Heaven, Hell, the mothman, dover demon, flatwoods monster, bigfoot, Loch ness, Inflatable Jesus, and love at first sight.
more like "Land Shuffler"...
It's very cool that someone actually made the first walker! A Big block Chevy engine and Aircraft Hydraulics and rework the shuffle to a stepping movement and lookout Star Wars! Needs movable arms for the control of guns tho! Ow, and a computer too!
Oh, come on. So it's not perfect. It's COOL! Besides, AT-ATs (while they are infinitely cooler) have been out of production since a 'long time ago'. And talk about hard to get parts from a 'galaxy far, far away'. Will your granny geezering down the street have people stop and look?
And it's something that someone actually BUILT, instead of five minutes of crap Photoshop and a puff of vaporware, calling it a 'design concept' like that's something worth wasting electrons on.
okay, but who would buy it for this much? and c'mon, it looks/sounds/feel like it's gonna fall apart if one of those sponge balls bounce back at it.
the failure to be able to transverse small obstacles such as stairs is what made the ED-209 a market failure in its Detroit test market. well that and a few other "glitches".
Definately ED209.
THE BALLS.
If the dumpster on the corner could get up and walk away, this is what it would look like. Still, gotta give the Japanese credit for being that much closer to making Robotech a reality.
Now I know who to call if I ever get attacked by big red space invaders.
All kidding aside, this this it more impressive than some of you are giving it credit for. A lot of the major work is done with the exception of being able to actually take a 'step.'
Of course the only person both rich and weird enough to buy this thing is.... hmm.... I'll let someone else finish that sentance.
Sorry, but for my money, my robot better not squeak when it shuffles.
The Ewoks were able to defeat these things with some simple logs and rope.
Look out!
It's very slowly coming this way!
I want to take one through the late night fast food drive up window late one night.
You can clearly see the potential here. Walking (especially over obstacles) is a non-trivial control problem requiring some serious work, but the rest of it just needs a bit of development. Faster hydraulics, composite structure (lighter and quieter), moah powah, etc. This isn't a bad effort for a guy in a garage. I do wonder what the legal and regulatory issues are with something like this though. Not much fun if you can't take it out on the streets.
I remember this from quite awhile back.
It's for sale now you say? Hmm, I'll have to go over my security budget . . . Oh, wait, it can't step over a curb you say? On second hand, I'll pass.
The ED-209 is a very motivating personal trainer, btw.
Uh, guys, you posted about this over a year ago:
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/tag/sakakibara-kikais-land-...
hmm... good point. i bet steve woz would play polo in it though.
If it can't step over curbs, that's an easy way to keep it from going on a rampage. Just hem it in with impassable obstacles like boxes of kleenex.
Mock all you want. I STILL want one.
Looks very top heavy...
a small shove > land walker.
I was waiting for your comment, dalziel_86.
The point is, it's for sale now.
Lemme know when there's an offroad version that actually, you know, walks. Also, I think I'd need a window by my feet so that I can see what I'm about to step on.
It's neat, but I'd like less wobbling, and as the first poster said, something that looks like it *won't* tip over. And unfortunately, physics has it that it has a very good possibility of tipping over if someone wiggled when they should've waggled during a shaky step. I wouldn't want to be the guy inside when it tips. Nor the guy who has to right it again...
Still cool, just very dangerous looking.
all you robo-haters are gonna be first in the thermal depolymerization vats to make robo-lube when our glorious cyberoverlords finally step forward and take over!
okay.... im gonna call the men in white coats now.
ring ring ring
whats that you say? giant teeter tottering robots moving in excess of 2 mph are on a rampage launching foam bullets at you? its the end of the world!
superbad says:
"but the rest of it just needs a bit of development. Faster hydraulics, composite structure (lighter and quieter), moah powah, etc"
Don't forget the "paint on armor" . . .
But really what is wrong with making it a "hover" or a "tracked"
Russia buy robots to protect it borders from Cthulhhu
Huge adroid was constructed by Masaki Nagumo armed with machingan is going to be one of defender of Russian border. As Putin mentioned at on-line press-conferense Russian army will be equipped with those human-like robots in nearly future. Independent experts suppose, that awakening of Cthulhu is the primary cause of that desision.
