When David Reeves, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Pres said that the 60GB PS3 was history after this batch of stock goes dry, he was either wrong, or accidentally spilling the beans. Sony is now officially saying that the PS3's 60GB version will be around for awhile. So no fears about losing the console's hardware PS2 emulation to the sands of time, just yet. [Kotaku]
Update: It's actually being discontinued. See here for details.

He was right AND Sony was right...
"said that the 60GB PS3 was history after this batch of stock goes dry"
Therefore, it'll be around for awhile.
Well, perhaps he was talking about the version with the hardware emulation going away and replaced by a new, cheaper to manufacture version that also has a 60gig hard drive.
like i mentioned earlier the sooner they get rid of the emotion engine the sooner we can see ps1/ps2 games truely upscaled by increasing the internal resolution
@AndyDuncan: Agreed .. It is a good guess that Sony is going to do whatever it can to cut costs on the PS3, and that means dropping hardware emulation in place of software emulation. But, it also means the $500 PS3 will be with us for a long time to come - or, until they drop the price even lower, of course.
I never have seen any information that the hardware emulation is significantly better than the software version. If someone has links to that, I would love to see it. Otherwise, as DEVIL-ILLUSION mentions above, it seems as though everyone would want software emulation to get upscaled resolution.
Well, I'm back to wanting a PS3 haha. I'll buy one for 500, get a ton of PS2 games, and install Ubuntu, but RFOM, and just sit back and wait for some good games to come in..
@Monty: While the software emulation might grant users upscaled resolution, it will result in decreased PS2 compatibility. Sony have said so themselves.
...or maybe it was a strategy to drive sales immediately after the price drop right around the time of E3 to capitalize on all the press about the games coming out, just trying to create a false shortage to make headlines. Or am I just cynical?
Sony is more and more of a complete clusterf#&* every day. Their own executives can't tell what's going on.
I'm more and more convinced that Sony's company culture is corrupt to the core, and it is eating them away on the inside.
According to the latest reports on EvilAvatar.com and Joystiq, the plan is to let the $500 60 gig system run its course, which directly contradicts this news article.
"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our hardware offerings in the North America at this time."
In our opinion, it's a touch disingenuous for Sony to just now be bringing this information to light, even though Karraker goes on to insist that this is not a bait-and-switch. If that's the truth, why make it seem like the company was returning to a two-SKU strategy when that was clearly just temporary?
I don't believe anything Sony says any more since it is clear they blatantly lie.

SINSTARX, have you forgotten how many games work already:
[gizmodo.com]
And if people want more games to work (which in my opinion is mostly only a complaints from someone bias against sony) Sony will make more games compatible.
@Jitty: Actually, Sony has stated that it is not a priority for them to expand upon the software emulation, so if new updates come they will be welcome but don't expect them.
For instance, God of War 2 does not run using software emulation. There are many others, and a large number that Sony claims work still have issues. European executives even suggest that playing without sound is acceptable, and therefore only a 'minor glitch'.
It's a price-cut not a clearance!*

I know what sony has said but they've said a lot of things. But with enough people complaints and problems, they'll get to it. Just like the price. Hey, maybe sony was planning on discontinuing the 60GB version but I'm pretty sure the uproar that's going on right now will make or has made them change their mind. If enough people care so much about every little game working. (which I doubt they will) sony will add more games to the BC list. Plus, if you haven't already played god of war 2 on a regular ps2 or a ps3 with the EE. You probably don't want the game that much...
