Engadget's got a tip from one of their sources that AT&T and Apple are working together to embed IPTV capabilities into the Apple TV by 2008. We're skeptical.
Apple TV? Not doing so hot. IPTV? Not doing so hot. Apple TV and IPTV together? What makes you think that this will be hot?
AppleTV's main purpose, in our view, is to get Apple's content from your computer into the living room. Whether it's iTunes music, iTunes movies, or iTunes TV shows, it seems like just an extension of Apple's ecosystem.
Now, with the recent addition of YouTube to Apple TV, it seems like Apple's making a bold step in working other content providers into the box. However, by adding IPTV to the mix, it would cannibalize Apple's own TV show section of their iTunes store, which doesn't quite make sense to us.
But, while we're talking about long term predictions, we've also heard that Apple TV's getting a HAL voice chip and a huge red light by 2010. And by 2029, the last remaining Apple TVs will be retrofitted with time machines to send the then recently deceased corpse of Governator Schwarzenegger back in time to veto some more immigration reform bills.
But yes, we IPTV is a nice option to have even if it's lame. Which is why people are looking forward to it on Xbox 360s.

Should I ask what is up with all these chicks licking things? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just don't know how licking electronic devices became all the rage...
i would be pissed if someone linked my gadgets. hot or not, i think thats just gross. Where is my Purell?
Isn't that what the xbox 360 is getting?
Jason is exactly right. It's a nice option, and I am licking forward to it on Xbox 360s, and all kinds of other places.
Hey! The world would be a much happier place if our gadgets got licked more often.
I'm skeptical as well. The Xbox 360 IPTV will also be provided by At&t, no? Unless that's changed now. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Olivia Munn licks everything they unbox now on AOTS. Great pic to get people to read the article btw.
IPTV on the Xbox 360 will be awesome. Can't wait for the fall update.
@DorkusMalorkus
I guess that's my problem. I don't know who Olivia Munn is or what AOTS is... so I guess I missed the whole point of the commentary the picture was supposed to present.
Still, like I said, I'm not against hot women licking things.. I certainly wouldn't discourage it.
What's interesting is U-Verse runs Microsoft's IPTV software.
Yes. The XBOX 360 is suppose to be getting IPTV update in the Fall.
damn. now i have to buy an AppleTV.
Imagine Steve Jobs right now. "Oh yes.....lick my extension to the next generation"
Anyway, I don't see why Apple would have a problem with something that does a broadcast of some sort into the device, even if they DO provide television shows for sale. Apple is still a hardware company, and anything extra that helps to sell the device should be considered.
~generic statement regarding hot gadget licking~
I'm thinking that they might use IPTV for live events, to round out the portfolio and make AppleTV a viable alternative to cable. Think about it: iTunes gives you the high-quality programming for a fee, YouTube gives you "channel surfing" for free, and IPTV delivers live sports, awards shows, news, etc on a pay-per-view basis. Live event coverage is the one thing most internet video services are lacking, and this could fill that hole.
Mannn giz....now whyd u have to go and put a picture like that...dang shes hot....so what is this thing shes lickin?
The Problem with items like this is there needs to be some sort of parallel launch of product and content. At least apple should've launched 10-30 HD titles just to see what it is capable of.
I don't know if I would go around licking electronics. It is likely to have been down Jason's pants.
@dome,
I agree. Apple should at least take a page from the XBox marketplace book and provide rentals, which would allow you to use your ATV for HD, and at the same time not worry about it eating up your hard drive since it disappears after a certain amount of time.
I'm really excited for the IPTV on the 360.
I'm not exactly sure when the fall update will hit or what the price plans will be but it's sure to be good.
rebelprince has it right. I use iTunes for 100% of my television programming, but there have been a few times when I've wanted to watch something live (like the Oscars), and iTunes isn't capable of that. So iTunes would be your on-demand service, and IPTV would be your broadcast service. It makes perfect sense. (And YouTube is for brain candy.)
Sigh.....Olivia Munn
I'd like to be able to purchase movies through the ATV though, and then be able to be snagged through the iTunes client on your computer for safe storage.
Nope. Nope. and Nope. Not gonna happen. First of all iPhone deal was via ATT Mobile, which is still a totally different business from Uverse. AppleTV is not an iPod, doesn't have the same momentum, etc. At $250 it is a steal, but it does not have the iPod success yet (maybe never). To ATT, iPhone = iPod. Uverse TV is MSFT all the way, unless the iPhone gets an IPTV extension. And no way iTunes penetrates (i said penetrate) that platform. The STB runs a Media Center of sorts, and 360 already has the capability... not to mention, MSFT has the Media Distribution and PPV engine for Uverse. And that licking stuff... well we are all just animals after all.
"Olivia Munn licks everything they unbox now on AOTS."
Time to find a box I can fit in.
did she lick these yet?
For some reason I thought the caption to this picture was the headline of the previous story ("How Manfrotto Tripods Are Bent Into Life")
i don't know what the article's about and i don't really care to know. i'm just posting to voice support of chicks licking things.
She could lick my gadgets anytime!
Oliva Munn is heinous. Leave the licking to Chobot.
At this point anything that Apple adds to their TV box is lipstick on a pig. IPTV in particular, while probably the wave of the future, just won't be implemented in a consumable way in any device for years to come. Apple is too far ahead of the curve with this one, unless all you plan on using it for is for downloading over-priced, locked-down, low-res content.
Apple tv's look nice, the hacks etc for them is excellent, But I wouldn't want somebody's spit on my AppleTV... Also, IPTV on 7.5mbit / 128kbit upload? I don't think so. The Xbox 360 is the better option for us people in NZ as it actually does more than just play Videos (even though osx on the appletv looks nice...) - Big choice! (maybe me waits?)
Wow this really works! You put you Apple TV in the freezer for 2 days. Then take it out and lick it (as per the photo) and your tongue does indeed stick to it (as per the photo).
Cool! (Literally)
How can you console clowns sell out any further? Oh yes please, please, pretty please sell me a new device for a fortune and then charge me subscription fees, becuase computers are so hard to use- and too many buttons confuse me-keyboards and alphabets too hard to comprehend...must sell soul... Both MSFT gaming products and all of Apples new hardware releases are all focused on hearding the cattle of window lickers who cannot operate heavy machinery, drive cars or operate computers.
This merge will happen and (leak) iphone will be used for remote viewing of apple TV. How can one be skeptical when there are so many F#$ktards out there who buy themselves into digital slavery- shiny boxes and tin foil with subscription services seem to have found a strong market with all of these window lickers.

I guess I need to get her over to SNL

iTunes Store and traditional broadcasting are not mutually exclusive. Perhaps it takes the perspective of someone in the media to see that.
