Swedish Canon exec Robert Westin has apparently told the (also Swedish) site Kamerabild that Canon's announcing a new DSLR on Jan. 24, a week before PMA. The obvious choices are updates to either the Digital Rebel XTi (aka EOS 400D) or EOS 5D, since they're the two DSLR lines that've gone the longest without an update.
We might see updates to both at PMA, given that Canon's last freshly baked goods came out dualie style and the veep said Canon would be dropping more stuff next year than they did this year. If you didn't already ask Santa for a new DSLR for Christmas, it might pay off to wait a tick to see what Canon's got up its sleeve. [Kamerabild via Photography Bay via Engadget]

I'm still hoping that they'll bring back eye-controlled autofocus. Maybe this time...
given that the 400D's are being heavily discounted here (switzerland) i would guess that it's the one that will be replaced soon.
5D is getting updated, its getting the anti-dust package and maybe a boost in megapixels/iso.
The 40D has the same IQ as the 5D. It also has a bigger LCD and better weather seal. so its time for the 5D to get upgraded.
Will it have SD card support? That'd be nice, especially with the Eye-Fi...
When will Canon stop having this USA-only 'Rebel' naming convention? Wouldn't it be easier to just have the same name for same models worldwide? And by the way, does anyone know where and why it started? I always wondered if it had any effect on sales...
5D.
The xti i guess will be upgrade around august/september 2008 to be fresh for the holidays.
@endless:
doesnt this article say they possibly will upgrade before PMA? why would they wait until the end of next year introduce a new model? that would be stupid
@HoseHead: Yeah the price on it's dropped pretty considerably in the States too in the last month or so. And while Amazon's not definitive of anything, especially around Christmastime, it does has a very low stock of the 400Ds right now.
This will be the long awaited update to the 5D.
The new 40D is still too young to be cannibalized by a upgraded XTi.
Z,
The Rebel namegame is most definitely confusing, especially when shopping online. Canon Kiss: sugary candy or the Japanese version of the XTi? Stick with one name, Canon.
I hope they have something really special for the 5D mk II. At a minimum, live view, bump in megapixels, increased Frames per second...that would just be sweet. Enough to make me switch from Nikon to Canon.
My predictions...16MP at a minimum, 10fps, Live view, 25000 ISO to compete with Nikon. Then goodbye Nikon!
I own a 40D and even I would say it most definitely does not have the same IQ as a 5D. Lower noise, maybe, but it ain't the same thing as a larger sensor with its much shallower DOF.
It's gotta be the 5D. I can't imagine what a new rebel would have, other than a slightly larger LCD and live view, if it isn't going to outdo the 40D on paper (in the real world I'd still take a 10D over any rebel).
Whatever happens, I don't see any real leap in IQ in the replacement for either camera. For all intents and purposes I still can't see a huge difference between my 300D, 20D or 40D's image quality, except for incrementally lower noise at ISO 800 and up...and really, more like ISO 1600. The real improvements have been in usability. The only really groundbreaking DSLR recently is the D3 with noise levels a huge leap past the Canon pro line.
That is one sweet camera, too bad I can't afford it.
I am guessing Canon might bite the bullet and
- introduce Image Stabilization in the body.
- significantly improve sensor cleaning.
- throw a curve ball, like ISO 6400 or higher.
- Add WiFi (what with Eye-Fi already there)
- add HDR assistance.
- start showing technology that can do Focus bracketting (like Adobe's)
IS in the body?!? Get real, Canon's money is in their lens...L IS that with a 2X price difference over the non IS.
Rebel started back in the '80s when everyone would fork over huge sums of $$$ for slow ZOOM!s so they could take pictures of tennis. A certain player with terrible attitude, initials 'AA', and a round-the-head mullet + flat top got a big check for being the Rebel.
@ashwinmudigonda:
Canon will never have in the camera Image Stablization. It's in their lenses and that's that - $$$ in the lens.
- Sensor cleaning, yes.
- No need for ISO 6400, that's just stupid. That's a tiny niche for people wanting that.
@PatrickAustin:
40D same or better IQ than 5D. And the guy reviweing is a very well known Photographer. The 5D also loves to do through batteries maybe that will change on the upgraded release

It's definately the 5D. The uber-geeks at dpreview forums have already gotten a ton of un-official confirmation on it. They already dropped the retail price to clear inventory on the 5D. Besides, it has to be the 5D because I just bought one in June.
For what it's worth, I've shot both a 5D and a 40D and the IQ is not even close - the full frem 5D still rules. Simply one of the most beautiful cameras I've ever used. I look forward to seeing a souped up model, though to be honest, the current 5D is plenty of camera as is for me (but I never turn down gadgets!)
You are right. I have the 70-200 IS and it cost me a fortune. Doesn't hurt to dream.
@ashwinmudigonda: I have the 70-200 L without IS. love it
I hope it's the successor to the xti. I want to trade my xt in, and it would be cool to skip a whole generation
(I can trade it in cause I bought it at costco, hahaha suckers who buy things at circuit city)
I am totally pre-ordering the 5D M2.... I need full-frame again, getting tired of scanning slides!
5d MkII, 3D, 7D... Do we think that they might update the 5D and still release another FF model, or is everyone talking about the same model and it's the only one we'll see for 2008?
I've been waiting to get back to FF and before I ching up 3g's I thought I'd raise the question
Thanks in advance.
