Santa Rosa-based iMacs with Brushed Metal Frame on the Horizon?

Call it wishful thinking, but the folks at 9 to 5 Mac are reporting that Apple's new iMacs (which they say will debut at WWDC) will pack Intel's Santa Rosa technology and come in sizes larger than the current 24-inch model. Both are pretty safe assumptions, but what they'll look like is up in the air. Will they have brushed metal frames, will they resemble Apple's Cinema Displays, or is Apple dropping a completely new design on us? Only a few days before we officially find out.

  • I've decided to sell my G5 and move to an iMac. The G5 is too large for my living space and I can get away with an external drive and FireWire hub for the things I need.

Well.... Design and re-design is pretty much what Apple does... so I'd think yes.

  • The current design is not that old, and I dont see a reason to change it. The CRT iMac remained in its previous configuration for ages, and the G4 only changed because of the arm (which while very well designed and tested, still ended up failing on a few of them enough to make them redesign.)

Brushed Metal is a Pro thing, expect the iMac to remain as is for the foreseeable future. If anything we will see a black model. Also the fact that the Macbook is white and black and was recently updated points to the iMac remaining as is.

If anything, I would like to see the iMac thinner with a 30" screen.

Brushed metal or black frame would be nice.

  • @Falconfire
Hush! Don't you know Steve reads Gizmodo? If he has two possible designs lined up and is trying to decide which to greenlight, we dont need you steering him toward the crappy plastic one instead the nice brushed metal one.

    @Steve
Brushed metal does not have to be pro only. Look at the success of your new iPod Nano design.

  • Why does this form factor even still exist? Who spends that much on a computer that becomes completely worthless if the monitor goes out?

It would be a shame if Apple phased out the mini and left this all-in-one debacle as the only affordable Mac.

  • I told my parents we should wait until after the WWDC to by an iMac. Can't wait.

  • I won't be happy until they prodice a version that excludes the monitor and is priced close to $600 and can be upgraded (ram, hard drive, video card). We need a people mac - not another "I can afford an iMac, what's your problem."

  • HDMI please... then i'm sold! my imac core duo still kicks ass. These new ones need to be a noticable step up in preformance for me to spend more £££

  • I want one with no monitor too.

But failing that, I much prefer the "Luxo Jr" iMac design to the current one.

  • I know several working pros that own iMacs and use them as their daily workhorse. Most have upgraded to the Intel iMacs because of being able to run Windows (as testing for web design mostly), and more than a few are waiting for this new redesign, and will buy it.

I never cared for the current iMac design-wise and I hope the new ones are sleeker, more modern, as well as faster. Some may not see the sense in having an all-in-one machine, but they sell like crazy. And until a headless Mac can be built that is small enough, fast enough, and cheap enough I just don't see much of a market. How many people do you know use the Mac Mini as a make-a-living machine?

I'm really more of an "abraded mineral" kinda guy.

  • I'd actually like it (a) if it was brushed metal, and (b) if Giz's silhouette turned out to be accurate.

  • Since apple has always been enviromentaly friendly, perhaps a hemp inspired version. Plastic coated hemp base and frame for an asian enspired theme.

  • Brushed aluminum would be the icing... Santa Rosa chip, with a quality Nvidia card (yes!), and Parallels 3.0 running Halo2 on XP. My G5 imac is the best Mac I've owned (7 total) although probably not the coolest looking... could be time to upgrade.

  • No the new iMacs are going to be art deco.
    pure genius.
