OK, hear us out. We know this video is a few days old, but we just spotted it, and we think it is remarkably well done. The video shows a potential Super Mario Galaxy for the DS, and although we are inclined to believe it's a fake, Camp Gizmodo is a little divided. Check the video out and then jump to see what we made of it.
The debate raged on behind the scenes, here's what the weekend team made of it:
Mark: Bullshit!... Later Luigi stuff doesn't look fake... you know what it could be, streaming from the Wii.
Jesus: Looks totally real to me... I can't imagine anyone recreating that in low poly count.
Haroon: Hey guys, are you into elf fetishes?
Eric the Intern: I think it's fake... the DS can't render something that nice looking.
There you go, the opinions are divided. Let us know what you make of it—is it real, fake or are you into elf fetishes? Who knows? Drop your comments below. [Youtube via New Launches]

It's a fake! Every website that's posted it has said so... and it's freaking obviously fake... the DS can't do most of that stuff!
video (wii) is played thru a ds media player!
It's gotta be fake. The only way I could think of where that could work is that the Wii is doing all the processing and then streaming the video to the DS. But that would be pointless because the graphics could remain high poly.
if only it's dumb down a bit on the graphic side, it may have convince me. Like when windwaker went to the ds. The graphic totally change but still similar enough to satisfied windwaker's players.
DS Fanboy votes for fake!

It also doesn't make sense. Why would Nintendo something so sloppy as to ape Phantom Hourglass's controls and port a Wii game? It's not like the DS is starving for titles.
Look at the freaking fake stylus! Why would you put a fake stylus on a shaky cam? Plus it's obviously just Galaxy put through some filters. The 1 DS star = 10 Wii points is a dead giveaway
@DarkNight_DS: so, can anyone explain the low poly count, the coarse unfiltered textures, Luigi and the perfect titling?
it was confirmed as a fake.
I think i's a fake but Eric you need to check out the ninja gaiden dragon sword demo on the DS...I have it pre-ordered and paid off already. all DS download stations should have it...it looks amazing, I think it is the est thing I have ever seen on the DS. The DS can render some pretty impressive stuff if you heave the right devs.
The real question, I believe, is whether or not the DS can do all of the computational work for a game like Mario Galaxy. I would imagine that the extensive use of gravity in Galaxy would make a port pretty much impossible (unless it was significantly dumbed down, in which case it wouldn't be anything like Galaxy).
@Seiven: True, Ninja Gaiden DS is impressive - but I still say it's no Mario Galaxy.
@jesusdiaz: thats how most things look on a wii...
:P
i call fake, but man i would totally get it if it was ever released.
I think they did a good job and the low poly count is almost convincing. I would totally buy it but I'm pretty sure we would have heard some news in the pipe about it awhile ago.
Just take a look at the Mario and Luigi models from the Wii version...totally different. Mario's face is different and he has no expression either when he gets the DS. When Luigi runs his head tilts back but doesn't here.

Elf fetish....
I don't actually care, but I think it could be real. I won't bother explaining why because no-one is actually going to read anyone else's comments - they'll just post their own opinions below.
the give away is mario's mustache toward the end of the wii section of the video.
I think that the fact that it had "1 DS Star = 10 Wii Points" made it a fake. Only a consumer would push for something like that. Nintendo would never go for that as they would be losing money.
It would be pretty sweet of a game though.
I likes me some pointy-eared chicks.
Oh, and fake.
@Collins1: Lots of people read the comments.
And I'd guess fake.
Fake, the movements are not quite right, the stylus is not the standard, the stylus is not present in every shot, the faces on the upper screen? the relative non-complexity of the Bros. while together. If 1 DS star = 10 Wii Points, then it probably has just 12. The math is quirky, 120 stars = Luigi... 121 stars - 120 stars? 1 Star????
Fake. Why not spend all that knowledge on creating a new game? Good try, though.
As Elaine would say "fake, fake, fake, fake."
I like how not a single one of you can confirm this as fake based on actually beating Mario Galaxy. Anyone who had actually beat the game wouuld know what happens when you get all 241 stars.
@Mr. Fluffykins: I guess if DS Fan Boy says it's a fake, it's gotta be. That linked article only says that it's a fake. Nothing to back that up. No link to the creator's site. No explanation. Not even a name of who made it. The only think they link is a link to a terribly amateurish fan-made video of Zelda. Nothing of the caliber of this video.
If this is a fake, this is definitely the best fan-made video I have ever seen. Not only would they have had to downgrade the poly count, they would've had to downgrade the music and textures. Then, they allegedly animated those sequences with perceptually 100% fidelity.
Fake? I don't think so until I see some proof. This is way too well done AND polished to be just a common fan-made video.
I would be more shocked if Nintendo didn't release a Mario Galaxy port for the DS! The concept is doable, so to think Nintendo isn't working on one is foolish.
I want to call fake too. None of the youtube videos were pulled, which could have been easy for Nintendo to request and would have been a dead giveaway. Very nicely done though.
Did any of the sites showing it off try to get an official word from Nintendo yet?
