Here's a video showing what is supposed to be the iPod 6G user interface. The clips were originally posted by MacRumors, but they have been removed following Apple's request. They look polished enough to be real, but that doesn't mean they will necessarily be the UI of the next-gen iPod. Our reasons, and the clip, after the jump.
While Apple's request to MacRumors could mean that the UI may be real, it could also mean that it may be an earlier concept for a 6G iPod, done before the iPhone UI was completed. Why?
First, it makes sense economically and conceptually for Apple to use the iPhone interface. Having a single UI means a single development effort. In addition to that, Steve Jobs loves consistency and the whole Zen jazz.
Second, Jobs already announced Mac OS X-based iPods, just like the iPhone, and the latter's UI already makes better use of the widescreen interface than the existing iPod interface. Why adapt the older one when you have a brand-new one that everyone thinks is better and more attractive?
Third, the above would explain the lack of security in these shots. I doubt the actual iPod 6G UI will come out off Apple's Fort Knox-like labs.
And finally, the reason Apple requested the removal of their property from MacRumors could be due to fear of the videos affecting public perception and share price.
Oh, and one last reason: I think they suck. [Compilation video from DAPreview]

I am really hoping this is either an early concept of the 6g ipod like sugested in the article or just a fake. It would really suck if the new ipod didn't use the new iphone interface. If they stayed with the click wheel and didn't use a touch screen I would be very disapointed. Also if they for some reason decided not to make it with a large screen like the iphone I wouldn't even consider buying it. I know some people are quite attatched to the whole click wheel interface and if that is the case then hey those people have a whole five and a half generations to choose from and I doubt they will update the nano to have a touch screen or the shuffle. So bring on the widescreen touch screen ipod!
Crooked album artwork? No thanks!
What the hell is the obsession with Beatles on an I-pod? You can buy the albums in any store. Having Beatles music on an I-pod doesn't make you counter-culture. It just means you have that much less drive space on the I-pod.
A wide screen Touch iPod would be very expensive and fragile at that. This UI looks pretty good although they never showed how the person or whoever was moving the menu. I don't think the wide screen is a good idea. I think they should actually stop the line of iPods and upgrade what they already have in people's hands. I Have a grudge agenst Apple so I hope this isn't real.
OMG-PONIES, it's just iPod, no hyphen.
I actually wouldn't mind the click-wheel to remain. It has a tactile feel that makes it all that much easier to one handed navigate, especially when I'm in the car.
However, it must be widescreen for sure.
The flaw in your logic is that up to now, the iPod interface already sucks. They're finally gettting around to making things look better, but before, not so much.
@rcarydon:
I am curious to know what you are compating the iphone interface to come out with a statement that is sucks.
This should be good - Now back to you bob!
To think 6G is going to go back to nav menus is rediculous.
@Galley:
You know that was the first thing I noticed and that is very un-Apple like, I don't think this is the 6G.
Why did MacRumors comply with the takedown request but not Gizmodo? Do you have ninja lawyers?
@StackyBotrus: Just look at it.
Looks just like the current iPod UI, but with better visuals. Could even be the next iPod Nano UI.
@RCARYDON - I guess the interface sucks so much that its been praised by everyone including the competitors.
@CUREMASTER0 - You are a complete idiot. Stop trolling the posts. Your affraid for the wide screen touch interface ipod because it will bring down the complete atom bomb onto that lame Zune. Microsoft will cry when the widescreen ipod hits. I know atleast 30 people in my office alone that will pay up to $600 (comparable to the iphone) for the wide screen ipod. So go play with your useless Halo Edition Zune and your fat friend with the tattoos.
I could see them using this interface had the iPhone not come out. It is a decent-looking interface if they stick with the click wheel. However, since they have a touchscreen device out there now, with a much better UI, it only makes sense to use those components in the next iPod.
Definitely not something apple would ever release as a final product. These are either failed concepts or mock ups by 3rd party contractors. Things like the album art not being diagonal, and having a split screen where the title bar doesn't go across are minor details that Apple wouldn't overlook.
This is clearly *not* the 6G iPod interface since the 5G iPod is essentially the same size and specifications as the new iPhone. The new 6G iPod will indeed be an iPhone like device, but without the phone and with some very cool new Wi-Fi stuff as per all the rumours we have heard so far.
This is a clickwheel based interface, it can only be useful for a range of devices using the clickwheel, i.e. - the nano. (It's the only one left that uses the clickwheel). This cannot be anything other than the 6G nano interface or the much rumoured nano-iphone interface. If you think about it for a second, the fact that there is a world clock being demoed kind of strongly implies this is a nano-phone interface.
The fact that there are errors in it, (someone pointed out that the album titles are wrong), and the fact that it appears to have been recorded in January, kind of makes it seem like this was one of those "secrets with a clue in it" made in order to trap the "spy" who released it. I hope they catch him. :-)
That would be a disappointing interface for 6G iPod after the iPhone, but it would be nice for a software update for the 5G iPod, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
FWIW, I vote fake.
That is not the tracklisting from Love. It looks closer to Anthology 3, but still no match.
And it's "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", not "Happiness".
Would Apple Inc really mess it around like that? Wouldn't they likely just use the tracks from Love if they're showing the Love cover art..?
@The Lab:
Because they don't have to. Remember when Apple went on a rampage because someone leaked the garage band breakout box to a website. Apple took them to court, saying they weren't allowed to post stuff that they didn't announce yet. Apple lost and can't do anything but ask the site to take it down. If they don't, oh well.
If the iPod is touchscreen this UI would suck, but if it was still click wheel then this UI would be pretty good. APPLE JUST RELEASE THE DARN 6G iPod! Its been two years since a "new" iPod was introduced (the iPod 5.5G doesn
t count.
Yes, they most definitely suck.
This is obviously a mock-up for the new nano (Yes, there's a new nano.) The text is far too large for it to be for a 2.5" screen.
I agree with JERMENYBENDER, the new iPod will be basically the iPhone without the phone and internet, email, etc... It will still cost about $349 for the top-end, and $249 for the low-end. And it will once again kill anything in its path (Zune, et al).
Apple's been waiting a long time to release an all-new iPod, and its going to be a killer. The only thing I'm concerned about it how long Apple will wait to release it. How long is long enough after the iPhone publicity? While the press is still talking about the iPhone Apple won't release the new iphone-like iPod. Apple will wait until the storm dies down some, like maybe late-August, early September.
It kind of looks like it was made on Flash...
Especially that album art animation of it falling.
Personally, I hate the click wheel and always have. I also find the current iPod navigation to be rather plain, boring, and a complete waste of a full-color LCD. For these reasons, in my opinion, which I'm entitled to, I vastly prefer the UI on the Zune.
However, if the next iPod had no click wheel and used a GUI which was actually G in some way, yeah, I'd be all over that. Here's to hoping there's some truth in that video.
there's a certain irony in that it looks like the video clip was made on windows movie maker.
does the 6g have anything like a release date yet? i was hoping it'd be out by my gf's birthday, the mini i got her a couple years ago is just about done.
Steve said the iPhone was the best iPod ever made. Why would Apple deviate from the iPhone's iPod interface for all future iPods?
The 6G will be the same form factor as the iPhone, just a little shorter at the top skipping the phone speaker. It would still need a home button though. Unless the home button is positioned somewhere else, along the side or something.
I bet what we are seeing here is possibly a 5G iPod OS update that could be released soon to hold us over until the 6G iPod.
The touchscreen interface is not a viable interface for a true iPod. Sorry. It's just not.
I like the tactile nature of my 5G Video iPod. I know where the buttons are and can control it without having to look down or away.
The touchscreen is more novelty or folly for a device like the iPod and I for one would be very sorry to see it appear.
