Orbis Hacks One Wheel Off A Segway For Easier Sidewalk Maneuverability

Best Buy Testing New Section For Electric Scooters, Segways
Best Buy has started a 19-store trial of a new section for electric scooters, assisted bikes and Segways. The new business plan, in full: lure customers in with below-wholesale CDs, then pitch them to buy multi-thousand-dollar personal transportation devices favored by eccentric billionaires and mall cops. Though to their credit, this line from on of their execs about the section's business prospects is pretty funny: More » -

Japanese Scientists Miss The Point, Design Self-Stabilizing Electric Bike
OK, I'll admit that this self-stabilizing bike is clever: it's kind of a Segway turned sideways, using gyros to detect if it's off-balancing, and adjusting the steering automagically to compensate. It's also a standard electric bike, so it propels you along without needing any annoying foot-power: very 21st Century indeed. More » -

Chimpanzee Rides Segway in Daring Escape, Crashes in Woods
Chimpanzees doing anything is funny. But a chimp named Pan-kun tear-assing into the woods on a Segway? Now that is comedy. And don't worry, he managed to survive the ordeal unscathed. My guess was that he was willing to take a risk or two in a daring attempt to escape his captors and the endless humiliation of Japanese television. [Japan Probe via Neatorama] -

DIY Mini-Segway Shows Dean Kamen Isn't All That Clever
OK, OK... so Dean Kamen actually dreamed up the Segway in the first place and other amazing things, so he's pretty clever. But then so is the guy who's put together this Arduway out of an Arduino controller board and some Lego Mindstorms motors. It senses its position with a gyro, and balances pretty much like the real thing, only smaller. Maybe good for giving your pet mouse some 21st Century transport? If you're impressed and want to try it out then there's a DIY guide and the software available. Clever stuff. [Project page via Hackaday] -

Toyota Winglet Sport Feels Like Inline Skates for Klutzs Like Me
Yesterday we saw in action the Large and Medium models of the Segway-killer Toyota Winglet. Here you have the Type S, which stands for small but, according to Toyota, could also mean Sports. Looking at the video, it makes sense: basically, this thing seems to allow for faster, more agressive driving, achieving a behavior similar to inline skates. Someone should boost their engines speed as soon as they arrive. [Toyota] -

Police Officer Makes Drunk Driving Arrest On His Segway
You would have thought that the only way a police officer could have made a drunk driving arrest on a Segway was if the car jumped onto the sidewalk and slammed into one. Segway Crash Test is Awkward For All Parties Involved
Some agency not called the National Pedestrian Walkway and Novelty Tour Commission apparently ran the Segway though a battery of crash tests, dummies and all. I'm sure that by now many people have experienced something resembling this test, so it was probably wise to run the Seg into a few things to make sure it wouldn't kill anyone. As expected, the effect is almost identical to a tall man sprinting into another, face first. An alternative back story for this video: It's a performance art piece entitled "Dude, You Kissed My Eyeball." [YouTube] -

Man Uses Wii Balance Board to Move A Robot, Plans to Move People Too
Juan González has hacked together a simple setup that lets his Wii Balance board move a small, irritating robot in any direction. This looks like the first robotic pairing for the board, which has to date has only been interfaced with computers as a control device to awkwardly navigate games and mapping applications. It's pretty clear that González is excited about this hack (watch the end of the video), but he isn't done yet- next up is is a Balance Board-based "robo-surfboard." More » -

Segway RMP Is Badass, War Machine-Worthy
I actually want this Segway, it's like a mini-tank version for cyber-gladiators to parade out to the arena on, with knobby knuckle wheels that look like they're ripped off the Iron Monger. The RMP's guts are basically the original Segway's on steroids, jacked up to haul 400 lbs of fat cop. The bizarre wheels allow it to smoothly move in any direction, which actually looks kind of freaky in motion. Check out the video of its oddly seductive shimmying after the jump, since you can't afford it: It "might" run $50,000.

PAM Lifting Vehicle: Yet Another Segway-like Flying Deathtrap
If you didn't get enough of the Vertipod from last month, another Segway-like flying vehicle called PAM has shown up on the radar —literally. Like the Vertipod, a simple shifting of the weight points the PAM in the appropriate direction. So, in theory, it should be simple to operate (so why do you need a pilot's license?). 'Segway of the Sky' Tops My Christmas Wish List
Yes, the Segway is lame. But then, the Segway can't fly. If it could, I wouldn't judge its owners so harshly. Say hello to the VertiPod, which is basically just that. You stand on it and steer it around, and by leaning in one direction or another it'll point you in that direction. It all sounds terribly dangerous, and I want one. More » -

Segway Mods Taking Over the Dweeb World
We had no idea Segways were being modded even more than PCs. Of course, you can put crazy, gigantic wheels on the thing, but you can also add all kinds of containers to carry stuff, pull a trailer with it, gold plate it, turn it into a rickshaw, and of course, it wouldn't be an American invention without plenty of room for advertising. Take a look at Segway Junkyard for even more outrageousness. [Segway Junkyard] More » -

iSlide is a Segway/Skateboard Combo Concept
We all know that Segways are far from cool, but skateboards generally do meet the requirements for things that we'd be seen on in public. What happens if you combine the two? You get the iSlide concept, a weird-looking skateboard loaded up with fuel cells and the balancing mechanism of a Segway. You'll need at least some balance to ride it, but it does sound like fun. I'm still not sold on how cool it'll make you look, but as long as photos of Woz playing polo on it don't come out, it should stay at least a few steps above the original Segway if it ever officially comes out.
