Sony VAIO T 10th Anniversary With LED Backlighting and Solid State Drive

At last, here's the new MacBook Mini, complete with LED-backlit screen, optional 32GB Solid Storage Drive 8-hour battery life and Core 2 Duo processor in a slim 2.68-pound 0.88-inch glorious black design. It looks like at the end it wasn't announced last Tuesday, like the rumorlosersmongers predicted.

Oh, and it comes from Sony. With Windows Vista. And unfortunately, is Japan only.

It's the new Sony VAIO Type T 10th Anniversary which comes with everything that you wish in a modern sub-notebook: 1,366 x 768 11.1-inch panoramic screen, 1GB memory, 80GB hard drive and DVD dual layer recording. The HD and the DVD-R can be changed for a 32GB flash SSD and a 160GB hard drive respectively. In two words: I WANT. More specs and the price after the jump.

You won't get all that for the $1990 of the base model, though, which actually comes with a Celeron M 443 processor. More so-so news: like yesteryear MacBooks, if you decide to go the Core 2 Duo route the 10th Anniversary model won't come with Santa Rosa. However, with that battery life I don't think I would care much about it. Even less if I can plug the optional big battery, that will make it reach a 18-hour battery life according to Sony.

It uses a Intel 945GMS Express chipset, so no dedicated GPU or RAM. It comes with 2 USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire, ExpressCard/34 slot and SD/MMC/Memory Stick PRO/Duo, along with camera, 802.11a/b/g with a built-in extendable antenna in the display and external antenna connector on its side, fingerprint sensor and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR.

  • Wow, Son'y created a subnotebook that matches the specs of my 4 year old Dell Latitude, how impressive.

What's this!? A reader that comes from the future and has a Dell Latitude with a Core 2 Duo processor, LED backlighting and 32GB solid state drive in a 0.88-inch low-weight kick-ass design!?

Oh wait, hold on. Nah, he's just a moron who doesn't have a damn clue about what he's talking about and/or hasn't really read the post.

You know Eugene, impressive is not the word that comes to mind when I read comments like yours.

  • Wow Eugene, your 4 year old Dell Latitude is less than an inch thick, is just over 2-1/2 lbs and has an 8 hour battery life! I guess I missed that model (or perhaps you are comparing a very limited subset of the specs--like just the memory).

This notebook is about extreme portability with excellent power. And sorry, no 4 year old Dell is going to compare.

  • A Celeron M should not be in a $2000 laptop - I don't care what else is in it.

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 08:18 AM on 05/17/07 *

Not if you want to play games.

If you want extreme portability and maximum battery life, along with a damn good screen, I can't think of anything better.

Except the model with Core 2 Duo, SSD drive and extra 160GB HD.

  • Since when did Sony copy the Macbook keyboard?

  • This post got me all excited about the Core 2 Duo with SSD, but it only mentions the price of the model without that! Any word on how much THAT model will cost?

  • Ooh, nice. I can't believe how many different laptops Sony comes out with. I would have carried over a few little design bits from some other models they have/had, but overall this looks great and better than some other recent ones they've announced. I really like the power button on the hinge.

  • 1st sentence you talk about apple. This isn't an apple product. Even though I hate Sony, I hate the way you compare EVERYTHING to apple products.

  • yeah, if Apple doesn't wow me with a sub-notebook soon and if someone can figure out how to get all the appropriate drivers for me to make this a hackintosh, I'll be all over it.

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 09:17 AM on 05/17/07 *

Godz, I talked about Apple because this is exactly what everyone has been expecting from them for a long long time now, even down to the design and chiclet keyboard.

So firstly, it's a criticism to Apple, not to Sony (an egoistic one, because I would like to see such a machine from Cupertino).

And secondly, it's specially a criticism to the clueless rumor sites, equally clueless analysts and their fabled MacBook Mini. Everyone keeps speculating about those without any real information whatsoever, because NOBODY outside Apple knows about real new products, no matter how they try to sell this to the public.

Anyway, those are the reasons why I felt Apple needed to be mentioned.

  • Actually, Apple ripped these keyboards off of Sony when they released the MacBook last year.
Although they weren't separated with the body of the notebook, the Vaio FE featured the flat key design months before Apple unveiled the MacBook.

Not to mention, Apple loves to hire Vaio engineers.

I'd take one. There I said it.

I love the green power button.
It looks like that's where you put the nuclear fuel rod or something.

You know, for your travels through time, LOL.

  • Ok, except for the CPU then they created a 4 year old Dell. Mine has a 1G ram, 120g Hdd, 8 hours of battery and its kist slightly heaver at around 3lbs.

  • For a while, sonys have been the only laptops I've liked other than apples.... yet another reason I think they're cool (though this comes from never owning one, and just thinking they look cool and have nice specs.)

  • continuing from bobvilla's comment:

Sony had taht keyboard first, since their X505 back in 2003, whereas Apple adopted it in the Macbook in 2006.

  • Eugene, really? So yours can max out to 2GB of RAM? It has an SSD option? How fast is your FSB on that old Dell of yours? It has an ExpressCard slot? Is the 8 hour battery life with an extended battery if so, the Sony one claims 18 hours of battery life. I really doubt your Dell is wrapped in carbon fiber and has an LED backlit screen.

  • The same chiclet keyboard was already featured on the Sony X505. So comparing this to a none-existent Mac laptop is moot.

The design is very similar to the discontinued X505 that came out in 2004. This is probably its true successor so comparing it with that would probably be more appropriate.

  • @Eugene,

Your Dell (like most laptops from 4 years ago) probably uses SD-RAM or DDR-RAM whereas these newer laptops uses faster DDR2RAM. That is one difference. The other would be FSB, screen technology, newer wireless chipset with better power management, SSD options etc.

  • Very nice. I imagine the price is going to push toward $3k.. I have a sony tx750 with the same size screen (11.1). It's the perfect size to stick in a backpack.

The style is really the first UMPC's IMO.

  • Image of itchytooth itchytooth at 10:36 AM on 05/17/07 *

Hmmm, wonder how it would run OSX86.

  • For $2,140 You can get the 32GB SSD with the Dual Core Duo and the 18 hours of battery life. Expect it to be available in the USA in a month or so.

  • Poor, poor Eugene... you make one assenine comment and the whole world points out again and again you have no clue what you're talking about. so sad.

I figure by the time this makes it state-side, the price would drop to about 2K for a low level Core2Duo model with the SSD and 2G of fast RAM. Which would be in line the general prices in the US exercised by Sony.

  • Call me crazy but I swear I saw a guy at my school using a mac book mini. I was staring at it for the longest time. It looked so small and I'd never seen a mac like that before. Hmmm...Perhaps I'll take my camera with me and snap a shot of it.

  • Just imagine, if it wasn't for those tightwads in Cupertino, you fanboys could be runing OS X in this beatiful MICROSOFT® WINDOWS™ VISTA™ compatible laptop.

    LOL

  • Anybody else notice that the keyboard in the 5th pic in the gallery is different from the other pics? I heard there were 2 models in Japan, is a huge enter key one of the "features" of the more expensive model?

  • i think the one with the big enter key is a japanese keyboard layout

  • These TX vaios seem to have an average lifespan of 18 months before motherboard failure. And sony don't offer a warranty upgrade. They do offer it pre-loaded with a bunch of bloatware though. Buyer Beware.

  • Maladjusted - you might be right, kind of, my Vaio TR's motherboard died after 2.5 years, but I had an extended replacement warranty and instead of getting a TX I got the UX - Super cool!

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead\'s Chips Ahoy! Kaiser-Machead's Chips... at 01:31 PM on 05/17/07 *

Did they actually stick an extending antenna on it? Nice...*snap*..woops.

Too bad it's a Sony, now it will have to come with their usual shipment of craplets atop OS bloatware goodness.

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead\'s Chips Ahoy! Kaiser-Machead's Chips... at 01:32 PM on 05/17/07 *

But I will say this, they design some beautiful hardware.

  • If I had the $$$ I'd get this to get laid at Starbucks.
I am waiting for the successor to the X505 also. The most beautiful notebook ever ^_^ .

  • @ aec007 - Id def buy that if I could run OSX. I love apples hardware but I give props to sony for making a good looking product. As for windows, I wont even get started ont hat garbage. good comment though

  • Ive only had Sony Laptops. Love them to bit. Have a TR2 still going hard, must be for years now without a single problem. Got myself a UX, which is the best for travelling. Sony stuff roxs!

  • You can put OSX on this yourself if you cared enough. And is that a Type-N wireless antenna connection i see? HOLY CRAP FINALLY. That feature ALONE makes buying this machine worth it. I've never understood the lack of external antenna ports.

  • Breath powered USB generator does charging on the go - EngadgetSony VAIO T 10th Anniversary With LED Backlighting and Solid State Drive - GizmodoDo you give good Google?

  • Nothing more out of Eugene? Damn, that was funny! Seriously though, my wife and I have gone through 2 Vaios now, and they have held up well to near constant daily use. Although I think for the money HP gives you more. But THIS laptop looks dreamilicious, fer REAL! And 18 hours of battery life? Holy fer-reakin' crap Batman!! Would this run all the newest games? Ahh, I guess that screen would be too small anyways. TASTY!!

  • I Agree, Sony Does Rock!
I've had a Vaio VGN-T150 for three years now and it's been great. Now that I've jinxed myself we'll see if I really needed my extended warranty! "Extended warranty?" you ask? Hey, "It's a Sony"!

I've even been able to get 8 hours of constant use running Excel, PhotoShop & PageMaker (yes, I am still a hold out but only because I cannot afford InDesign).

  • And the screen? 1366 x 768??? This is to celebrate? My crap HP from 05 has a 1920 15.4"

WHY would anyone spend 2k for a green button on a screen you can't work on? Especially when you can put an LED in a ball of ice. That looked cool.

  • That's great rez for a 11.1 screen.
I'll meet you in the Sony Style at U-Village when it comes out so we can drool over it togather. Ah, nevermind, another gadget we won't see for awhile (Japan only for now).

Looks like there are more options for this machine!...
