Leaked Sidekick Gekko Manual Reveals Customizable Shells, Video Recording
Following the leak of Sidekick Gekko screenshots, the guys at Hiptop3 have snagged some pages of the manual. Besides confirming the 2MP camera with video recording, the blurb about being "highly customizable" is a bit more clear: Custom shells, so you can dandy up your phone any way you like (obviously for $$$). Check out the page about swapping out shells below, or head over to Hiptop3 to pore over the whole set. More »New Sidekick Confirmed by FCC
Are you sitting? There's a new Sidekick coming. I know, you absolutely never saw this coming. The FCC has approved the new Sidekick model (Sharp PV210) for sale in the US and even included this fancy barcode label. We're still not sure if this model is the Aspen or Gekko—or how that whole mess is working out—but we wouldn't buy a new Sidekick anytime soon. [FCC via Engadget]Sidekick Slide Scarlet Available Now For $199
The rumored Sidekick Slide Scarlet (read: red edition) is available now from T-Mobile. It's just about the same as the regular Sidekick Slide, with myFaves support, QVGA display, microSD slot, 1.3-megapixel camera and all the Sidekick features that kids love. The phone's only major difference is the color Scarlet, and unlike the similarly-named actress, can be yours for just $199 with two-year contract. [T-Mobile]
Sidekick Aspen/Gekko Screenshot Leaked
Danger fans Hiptop3.com have managed to get a screenshot of the Sidekick Aspen/Gekko, the company's replacement for the teen-friendly iD. It seems like the newest addition to the Sidekick family will be a cheaper option to the more upmarket LX, and will feature web browsing, a 2-megapixel camera with video capture mode, and "highly customizable features." It's not completely clear what "highly customizable" means, but looking at the picture, it might have to do with the ability to switch colored bumpers. Also not clear: why there were two different release dates for the Apsen and Gekko if they turned out to be the same product. [Hiptop3]Sidekick LX Getting Video Recording and Playback, Maybe YouTube Action
Here's a snagged screen pointing to video recording and playback coming to the Sidekick LX in a future update. Nothing definitive on which codecs will be supported, but possibly H.264, which YouTube encodes videos in for Apple, meaning you might be able to watch YouTube videos. Or it could be a different one, and there's no word on whether there'll be a dedicated YouTube app. Regardless, video capabilities of some kind seem to be in the pipe. [Hiptop3]Rumor: Next-Gen Sidekick Prototype Details
In a Q&A with the Sidekick maker Danger's CEO, Financial Times asks him about what he's got in his pocket. Surprisingly, Hank Nothaft tells.
A prototype of the next Sidekick (mobile-cum-internet device). It's thinner and less wide but has a bigger keyboard. Now I no longer keep it on a belt, I'm always losing it. I was known as the "absent-minded professor" as a student.
Bigger keyboard, thinner and less wide? Sounds like a winner to us. If you're really a Sidekick fanboy, head over to FT for the rest of the interview. There isn't a whole lot of pertinent Sidekick detail, but you can get some insight into their leader. [FT - Thanks tipster!]
Update: Is this the Sidekick 4, code-named Gekko or Aspen? TmoNews has more details.
Sidekick 4 Coming in July?
It's been a while since we first heard rumors about a the Sidekick 4, but TmoNews has a scoop on two devices headed to retail in July that could fit the bill. The first is code named "SK Gekko" and will be released on July 27; the second is the "Sidekick Aspen" on July 30. No details other than the code names, so we're left in the dark as to what they look like, who they're made by and if Microsoft has had any influence in development. [TmoNews]It's Official: Microsoft Has Acquired Danger
It looks like Microsoft's acquisition of Sidekick-maker Danger is complete and official. Whether or not this is good news or bad news for fans of the Sidekick has yet to be seen, but we'll try to stay positive and keep an open mind. Hit the jump for the full press release. More »Fire Red Sidekick Slide Coming May, Juneish
We know how much you kids love the Sidekicks, which is why you'll be excited at getting a completely new color: fire red. Boy Genius has the image above, plus gives the estimated release date on T-Mobile at either late May or early June. It's no Sidekick 4, but it'll do for now. We're still wondering how much they had to pay Michelle Yeoh to pose for their promo shots. [Boy Genius]

Pocket Spelling Bee Looks Suspiciously Familiar
Franklin's new Pocket Spelling Bee was unveiled at the NYC Toy Fair this week and despite its more than passing resemblance to the Sony Mylo, it appears to be a solid educational toy. The device allows kids to compete against one another or the computer in a spelling showdown for supremacy. More »How Much Did Microsoft Shell Out for Sidekick Maker Danger?
$500 million. Says Om Malik, who's about as reliable as they come. A lot for the assimilation, but nothing compared to what they're throwing at Yahoo. [GigaOM]

Microsoft Absorbs Sidekick Maker Danger Inc.
Out of left field, Microsoft has bought Danger Inc.—best known as the Hiptop/Sidekick's daddy—for an undisclosed hunk of cash. Fear not, Sidekick fans, it'll be business as usual on that front. But this pretty much confirms that Microsoft's new growth strategy in areas it's obsessed with but weak in is simple, ill-fitted assimilation. Obviously, the goal is to grab Danger's mobile expertise, but I'm not really seeing the mesh here. Well, two words, maybe: Zune Phone. The full, official details below.
