AT&T's Lame New Terms of Service Hate Mobile Video From Sling and P2P

Revamped Sling.com Launches to Spendthrift Public

Sling.com has been in closed beta for some time, but now the Huluesque service is open to the public. The site includes 60 other content partners including networks like FOX and CBS and studios like MGM and Sony. And while you wouldn't expect to see any NBC content on there, you can actually watch shows like 30 Rock that are badged with a Hulu logo. My first reaction is that Sling's quality leaves something to be desired, but I certainly can't complain about the price. [Sling via AlleyInsider]

Illustrative Slings Show How That Arm Got Boned

Found via Digg, these illustrative arm slings show onlookers exactly how you broke that arm, so you can save precious seconds from not having to repeat that boring story. Of course, your coworkers seeing this will then ask about where you got the sling design, how exactly you fell down the stairs when you live on the first floor of a one story house, and why you're such a big liar. A quick search turned up nothing on where these originated, so if anyone knows, post it in the comments!

SlingNerds Rejoice: Slingbox Pro-HD and SlingCatcher Finally Available for Pre-Order

The Slingers are giddy today: After a long wait, many good things are happening with their favorite placeshifter. The Slingbox Pro-HD, which lets you sling 1080i content around a local area network, and the SlingCatcher, a set-top box intended to receive content from other Slingboxes, are both available for pre-order, $300 a pop, and better late than never. Windows-based Slingers can be psyched about the latest beta of the Sling Player 2.0 (available for Macs by like 2047 or something). While we're at it, SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian UIQ just arrived. So there you go, Sling away, just remember to lock the door so your mom doesn't catch you. [Slingbox Pro-HD and SlingCatcher via MegaZone at Sling Community]

New Dish Network 722s HD DVR Has Built-In Slingbox and Slingcatcher

At their Team Summit Retailer Conference over the weekend, Dish Network pulled back the curtain on a new flavor their latest HD DVR, the 722s. It's got a built-in Slingbox, plus Clip + Sling and Slingcatcher functionality to boot. The pile of whip cream on that box of synergy awesomeness is a brand new HD UI; a built-in, Yahooified browser; and a new remote with a touchpad and trigger. There's some other minor Dish stuff happening at the link too, if you're interested, but this new box is the headliner—all that and a can of Buffalo Pringles. [Multichannel via Zatz Not Funny]

SlingPlayer Mobile Gets Updated For Windows Mobile and Symbian

Sling's just rolled out new versions of their SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile (both versions) and Symbian S60. It's a free upgrade for current users and adds support for new handsets (Nokia N95, Samsung i760, Treo 500v, etc.) and improves streaming quality (Sprint Mogul) on others. New Windows Mobile Slingplayer Coming Soon (iPhone Version a Possibility)

Sling's set to release an updated Slingplayer this spring for Windows Mobile on both the touchscreen and non-touchscreen versions, with the new features being more optimized supports for newer handsets. They're also working on an optimized Nokia N95 8GB client, and going to expand their stand-alone Symbian clients to include UIQ support as well. What probably interests people more than optimizing an already-existing client is the possible introduction of a new client for the iPhone, which Sling tells us they're currently evaluating the iPhone SDK for. TV on the iPhone's generous screen means you'll never be bored again.

Not only can you use this to play back streamed HD content from the Slingbox Pro HD on your HDTV, the Slingcatcher acts as a file dump for tons of file formats as well (DivX, XviD). EchoStar Splits, Sling Media Could Reap the Benefits

According to a recent SEC filing, Sling Media's parent company, EchoStar, has formally changed its name to the DISH Network —a move that better aligns the company with its core satellite TV service. A spin-off company called EchoStar Holdings was also formed and, as part of the move, it will be taking over the Sling Media brand. What does this mean for Sling Media and their popular line of Slingbox products? More »

Leaked SlingCatcher Packaging Shots Reveal Specs?

Almost a year after catching wind of the SlingCatcher, The Tomo Report claims to have laid its on hands on pictures of the final packaging, which happens to splay the device's specs. According to the box, it'll require an HDTV, along with a USB 2.0 HDD or memory stick if you want to use SlingSync. It supports a ridiculous number of formats: WMV, MPEG- 2, MPEG-4, H.264 and Xvid for video, and MP2, MP3, WMA, AAC, AC3 and PCM for audio, plus a number of containers. Naturally, the close-up showing the specs is blurry, the first sign of a fake, so take this with some Morton table salt. Peep the other two shots post-jump. More »
