Silly hackers! You cannot destroy the internet! It's a pretty basic premise, that because the internet is a distributed network it's pretty insusceptible to being taken down wholesale by a small band of pockmarked, greasy nerds, but that's just what they tried to do.
Attacking a series of root servers with boatloads of denial-of-service attacks, it was the most extensive and deliberate attack on the whole of the internets in the web's history. What, you didn't notice? That's because it didn't really do anything, at least not anything that normal users noticed. You hear that, hackers? The score stands at internet: 1, greasy hackers: 0. Why don't you stick to phishing MySpace passwords and leave the rest of us alone?

Seriously, what is to gain for them to do this? I semi-understand the reasoning behind phishing scams, but taking down the net? There is no point. These hackers wouldn't have a hobby if it weren't for the internet, they should be praising it.
Stop using the word "hackers!" It's bad for those of us you just like to take things about and get them to work our way...
Call these people "'tards" or something similar.
I honestly can't imagine anyone over the age of 14 participating in this. Like, why? Especially if you consider yourself a "1337 |-|4x0rz" why would you want to take down the internet?
I guess I did something right when I worked at UltraDNS in 2000.
10 minutes until Gizmodo's DOSed into the ground ;)
Is that why my ping went up .1ms?
sounds alot lke the US strategy against al qaeda, no need to restate how much of a success that has been.
Earthquakes do a pretty good job tho.

so do planes flying into a couple of buildings as i recall.
bragging rights?
can you imagine the chicks you'd get with the pickup line "i brought the internet to it's knees and now i'm moving on to you."
That wasn't hacking.
their hacking was lacking?
they actually affected me quite seriously... i've had clients unable to receive email or access their website for over 4 hours, and then today i noticed some domains other than .org (specifically .at domains) are down... what the hell is going on here people?
Yeah the Internet is invincible until skynet goes online and T-800 robo nazi's kick your door in and laser you in the face.
Man Yesterday was horrible for all online gamers. My ping kept jumping form a cool 15 to 1028 about every 5 mins. It didnt jump for long, but sometimes the lag spike was big enough to get me booted from a game. It wasn't just one server either, or just me. In every server I attended peoples pings were jumping radically, and they were getting booted.
Seriously if that was just a small attack, imagine what a well coordinated one could do.
Stupid hackers. Web > any hackers. I'm amazed people are still experimenting with this. Routers and switches are getting smarter and a lot can often detect this and make all the magic changes in the background and re-route traffic so the attack is nothing more than a blip on the screen. And I bet it was a bunch of those al qaeda idiots that tried it from their caves with their 28k satellite connection. Oooooooh.
This was probably a retaliation for the denial of service their ringleader regularly receives at Hooters franchises.
In other news, why isn't there a port of pipe dream on xbox live arcade by now?
Skynet will prevail.
Foom bebe di Baash. Thats who it was.
Yay lets take out the internet, then talk about it on ICQ. OH wait, how?
It's interesting everyone here is being so cavalier about this attack, considering it is the most serious the internet as a whole has ever face. They managed to actually hit 3 of the 13 root servers with DOS attacks originating from apparently random and constantly changing IP addresses despite extensive security to prevent just such a feat. It's a pretty impressive (albeit stupid and a pain in the ass) attack, and could have given someone enough of a hint how to actually get through to all 13 that it's worth taking seriously. I mean, what would I do without my internets...?
"hacking" to get consoles and gadgets to do what theyre not supposed to do = good
"hacking" just to piss off people because your a prepubescent punk that thinks its cool to be an a$$ and beat up your parents while your at it = dunb.
seems that so called "hacking" has a wide spectrum like everything else, theres the good end helping people, and then theres the useless tard side, that serves no purpose.
So call yourself a modder, your not really hacking.
these people don't fit under the term "hacker" or "cracker" or anything else except maybe "skript kiddie". I seem to remember the guys from l0pht explaining how they had discovered some vulnerability that could bring the entire net to a crawl if it were to fall into the wrong hands... granted, they never tried to make it a reality but it kind of makes me wonder if it is feasible. This sort of thing is pointless and retarded, though.
I can't believe there are still people who think this is cool. Unless you place the US in Defcon 4, you are less than Matthew Broderick...and that sucks.
