Rating Gizmodo's iPod Announcement Predictions

We made a lot of predictions about what we'd see today at Apple's keynote over the past few weeks, and we were right some of the time and wrong some of the time. Mostly, however, we were right. I know, I know; I'm as surprised as you are. Let's take a look and see just how good we are at predicting Apple's moves.

Correctomundo:
-The iPod Touch Mock-Up looks pretty close to what we got, although Jesus got a little overambitious with that fancy home button. Oh, and no Bluetooth. But otherwise, bravo, J man.
-The iPod Nano Mock-up was also spot-on. Nice.
-We also called the (PRODUCT) RED Shuffle, right on cue.
-We predicted that you'd soon be able to make ringtones out of iTunes songs for an additional fee, but we didn't know the exact pricing or details of the editor. Whatever, close enough.
-We called the Wifi Music Store, albeit vaguely and with a lot of hedging.
-We wondered about 160GB iPods when Samsung announced they had made the proper sized HDDs that large.

Not Right… Yet:
-I swear, one of these days at one of these keynotes Jobs will announce that The Beatles are coming to iTunes so we can shut up about this once and for all.
-Along the same lines, there's no Yellow Submarine iPod to commemorate that non-existent deal.

Less Than Right:
-We kind of mixed up the iPod Touch and iPod Nano rumors, imagining a kind of dumb fat nano with a touchscreen. Way to not do that, Apple!

Well, that's pretty damned impressive, if I do say so myself. None of our predictions were completely out-of-the-ballpark crazy, and we nailed most of the major announcements today. The real surprise was the iPod Classic and iPod Touch doubleheader. We'll try to get 100% of it right next time.

  • WHO THE HELL CARES!?!?!?! Are you serious? Are you that desperate for stories that you are not only going to repeat the same old things throughout the day, you're going to go and compare those things to the speculations you've been repeating for the past week!? Honestly who the hell cares about this?

  • Oh and kudos on messing up formatting... again! Is it that important that you get a story up as soon as possible that you're going to not make sure it displays properly before you do?

@skeeve: You're lucky it's not Monday, the day when the Ban Hammer comes a' callin'

  • Whatever, I could honestly care less. If they want to ban me for calling them on lazy reporting and website management they can go right ahead.

@omg-ponies: Oh don't worry, the Banhammer works 7 days a week.

Criticism is fine, but if you're a total dick about it then I have no problem giving you the book, Skeeve.

  • @skeeve: Well if you could care less then why are you posting here. Anyone that has been reading Giz for a while knows what to expect on apple news days.

  • If you want to tell me I'm a dick for pointing out things that are annoying go right ahead. I just think Gizmodo'd have a lot more cred if you guys tried to diversify your stories a bit. I mean if somebody really cared about getting every 10 minute updates on the keynote, that's what the live blog's for. There are plenty of people that could care less about Apple products and they've had nothing to read all day.

And thanks for booting me, I was just trying to express some concerns. maybe I got a bit carried away but I didn't sling curse words or insult any of the staff directly... Whatever you want though.

  • Quitcherbitchin! Gizmodo definitely had the best liveblogging today.

  • clearly skeeve is bitter because he doesn't feel cool enough to own apple products, hence the jealousy when gizmodo covers an apple event.

  • Today the Zune and Zune 2 got pwned

  • Skeeve, are you really that desperate for something to fill your day with. Write up a fucking TPS report and GTFO.

@Galley, I think the other site might have done a little better job... Unless Giz had their no refresh system up somewhere that I didn't see.

  • So when are you doing predictions on when some sucker early adopter (sadly I have to include myself in that category) filing a class action suit over the $200 price drop? I know I was pretty fucking pissed over it.

Let's see: first one in line + $600 + $200 price drop = Ridculed by friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, strangers, etc.

All I've heard since this was announced, "Hey, did you hear about the $200 price drop? I bet you feel like an asshole? "

My favorite comment was from my father who called me up and told me "Is your ass sore? It should be, you just got fucked by Steve Jobs."

  • Props for Giz for fact checking and making themselves accountable. Mainstream news outlets don't do that very well.

  • I think these sort of things are important - I mean, if the Giz pulled zero predictions, then there's less incentive for us to pay attention to them. If they continue to get things right more-often-than-not, then it's good for them and their readership.

  • @ab3:

if i was MSoft i would just forget about the zune completely unless they could top this line up... probably not though lol

  • @skeevereturns: express "concerns" in a non-dick manner next time and you won't create a stir.

  • the new (red) ipods look sorta (pink) to me.

  • I.
    DON'T.
    FUCKING.
    CARE.

Just rename your site "Ipodo" and be done with it. Or: "gagingonjobsknobo"

The entire page is the same fucking "news" over and over again. We get it. New ipods. OMG, like fer sure! It's totally RAD! You guys can't get down on your knees fast enough for the jobsknob can you?

  • WOW. chill people.

I am tired of all apple news lately because the guessing game because makes the surprise less... surprisy, maybe?

I remeber Jesus commenting about the iphone, and how was a huge deal for the industry. This keynotes have become the bread and butter for giz this year. BUT the reason in not because giz editors love apple, more than apple is the only company that is pulling out massive amounts of fancy and shiny products that people want in their pockets.

Apple invasion is really crazy. they are accelerating the market and will have to crash at some point, the question is who will break first. the production line or the consumer pocket.

  • I would just like to thank Gizmodo for distracting me from my entire afternoon class. Good work on the live blog, my professor must think that I was really excited to learn...

  • Is it just me or do Lam's eyes look really messed up (i.e. buzzed) in that photo?

  • Good blogging...except the hair in the cam. Important to some..not to aholes who whine about it.

  • ZUNE SUCKS!

  • So, I'm thinking, how is the wifi store different than the regular store? If you need internet access to get to both, files transfer the same, and I could have itunes and use wifi on any other device with internet access...I guess I just don't get the name link, "wifi itunes store". Shouldn't it just be iPod with wifi+safari and the store should go without saying? I think it comes with a wifi walmart store too no? Or do I need another another cup o koolaid?

  • Exactly how does parroting what dozens of other sites are saying and making a PS mock-up of a spy photo that was not yours equate to Giz making predictions?

Were you the source for any of these? Did you actually predict anything?

"Some site said something, we talked about what they said, turns out they were right, give us a pat on the back."

    Ego trippin'?

  • @skeeve:

Whatever, I could honestly care less.

so you actually care quite a bit. you have a large amount of care over being banned. it concerns you greatly. you have so much caring... that it is entirely possible to actually care less than you currently care.

meanwhile. i couldn't care less if you get banned. as in ... there is the infinitesimally small amount that i care about it... and it is physically impossible to reduce the amount of caring. because there is no level of caring at all. nothing to make less.

  • Great Live coverage of the Keynote, keep up that good work.

By the way, I would have snagged one of those Ipod - touch into my pocket.

  • I really liked the idea of the iphone nano. A stripped out phone with full function nao would have been nice.

@skeeve: I have always had a problem with the whole "I could care less" phrase. Should it not be "I could not care less?" That would mean there is no lower level of care that could be assigned to this thought. What you have said is that while you might not be a fan of the statement or idea, there are still things that you care less about. Just my two cents. Of course, it appears you have been thumped by the ban hammer rather smartly, so if I don't hear back from you, no worries!

@Adam Frucci: Here is a thought. You should have a graphic that you post on banned peoples profiles, so a person can click on said profile and see what comment they were banned for. That would be sweet.
