The Yamaha Tesseract concept for Tokyo Motor Show is not a motorcycle. Because it's way more awesome than a motorcycle.
Featuring 4 wheels for enhanced stability, the frame is apparently still not much bigger than a normal bike. And somewhere in there fits two different engines, one gasoline of undisclosed size and another electrical (to dual impress biker chicks and eco babes, though probably offering some impressive performance payoffs as well). The important note to remember is that the Tesseract is not a motorcycle. Please spread the word and make sure every wife knows it while we pray Yamaha actually puts the...vehicle...into production.
We're also hoping to see the Tesseract transform into a Gundam robot and fulfill its true destiny. [autoblog]

my question is if it is an Autobot, or Decepticon
Me wants!
autobots transform and ro... wait a second who the hell are you?
Never Really liked bikes before, but now looking at this I might reconsider. Though how do i take the drivers test for this ? Wonder if I would need my motorcycle license then.
Oh! I just creamed my jeans! Thank you Gizmodo, you have the best geek porn ever!
TETSUO!!!!
As long as it has an iPhone dock, I'll take two.
I looked at it and immediately thought Mongoose.
So you mean no more kickstand? No more calf burns from the exhast pipe? Cool!!!
Daddy wants... and Daddy gets what Daddy wants.
Me Likey, but I want it to play that transformers effect audio when I hit a button.
That thing totally pawns the next Batman bike!
Hell yeah!
I don't like motorcycles at all.
And yet, if this were any prettier, my mortal eyes could not survive the experience.
I want it more than I actually understand.
I'd love to see this be used for a rally.
Can I trade my wife in for one? I mean, I'd probably get laid more often riding around town on that than I do now.
Umm, don't tell her I said that, okay. Thanks.
Is it not called a quad bike?
This'll take off in Europe, as there has been a surge in interest for quads for single person transportation. Makes sense too, as they don't use much more fuel than a motorbike, but have 4 wheels on the ground so are a bit safer for beginners.
I sure as hell will be on the top of the waiting list for one of these babies!
I wonder what the turning radius is like on a 4 wheel vehicle without an actual steering WHEEL? It seems like one would have to crank the handle-bars farther than they'd actually go to get a tight turn. . . any thoughts?
@ProfessionalGun: With those narrow wheels, I think you could turn on two wheels, rather than all for. Just speculation, though.
The gas engine powers the left side, the electric does the right. It only goes in circles...
Me likee too.
If an ATV and motorcycle made babies it would result in a Quadrocycle, perhaps? Either way, it's still a motored "cycle"... It just happens to be a four-wheeled motorcycle.
@abadomaX: Neither, it's Veritech Cyclone armor, gen 2.
sweet. no motorcycle license required.
Yes please.
Part of what I like about this as well is how much it will piss off Harley owners. They hate crotch rockets enough already, now one with 4 wheels? Oooooh burrrrn.
a tesseract?!?! hmmmm wats next? A wrinkle in time?!?!?
@DaLeech: Being that "bike" is short for "bicycle", I would actually say that this is a "quadike".
i see no point edges so it is a autobot
4 Wheel disc brakes? Independent suspension??? PLEASE tell me this thing has beefy enough suspension for serious offroad use... it would seem almost a waste otherwise...
@KiKadet: me too!
@ProfessionalGun: no problem. See the independent suspension? this vehicle still leans, and thus will still turn like a motorcycle.
@logruszed:
god i wish that was true.. the day that comes out is the day i devote my life to the road and/or evil. although i think cops would have it too, so i might need an upgrade first. eitherway.. that is one sexy thought not involving my gf.
... *drool*
I'm just wondering whether or not this thing countersteers...otherwise, it won't turn like a motorcycle at all.
Still wicked awesome though.
I'm guessing for what this will cost you can buy a whole Smart Car with protection from the rain and room for a few groceries. Otherwise all the cool kids are still on two wheels.
Looks like the guys at Yamaha have been playing some Halo 3.
That thing looks like a frigging GoBot!
@RiceBandit: Quike. Single syllable, sounds like 'bike' only with a 'kwa' sound instead of 'bie' sound.
i would TOTALLY have sex with that or anybody that rode one.
also, "quike" is one of probably 3 names that would make that thing completely un-sexy. "quike" is worse than "trike" which is one of the worst names i've ever heard.
If it could pull those wheels together so that you could choose between motorbike style leaning, or the quad bike set up, I'd be sold in a second.
Video or it doesn't work
I would be all over that thing if they actually make it. I really hope they make it.
@ProfessionalGun
It would be really easy to implement Countersteering or make the wheels turn at a greater rate than the handlebars.
@Daed
The Idepenent steering actually looks good, but here's hoping it actually works. The Dodge Tomahawk also had independent suspension, but for some reason, in every video of it I have seen, every time it makes any sharp turns, one of the rear wheels always ended up in the air.
But then again that was a Dodge and this is a Yamaha, so perhaps it's a grossly unfair comparison...
Will be at the "die har 5" thats for sure.
"the Tesseract is not a motorcycle"
Well, duh. Everybody knows a Tesseract is a hypercube projected into 3-dimensional space...
But if this vehicle uses Tesseract tech, why do they even bother to put wheels on it? [For those shorter jogs around the block, maybe?]
@KiKadet: Ditto.
is it me or does that look incredibly unstable? For those of us who actually ride motorcycle, it would seem apparent that when you went into a sharp turn the extra 2 wheels would encourage a CRAZY roll. The only way I see this workng is if the two right tires lifted while the two left tires lowered during a sharp right turn n(reverse for left turns, obviously)- otherwise... be prepared to meet the sausage monster!
Hmmm...Bike for bicycle so Bikequad sound like I thinks. This babe is nice!
that thing looks awesome. lol i thought of the halo 3 atv when i saw it
@MasterYong: It could always use a steering method similar to the Mercedes F400 concept car, which has full body tilt into the turn.
If it does transform into a Gundam robot, can we rest assured that the Agriculture Ministry is not in charge of it?
WOW, no one else saw a mongoose?!
This is AMAZING.
@cayton: "I think you could turn on two wheels, rather than all for."
I just a similar bike last week with two wheels in front. The wheels bend nicely on a turn.
looks like the mongoose from Halo 3.
If you read the article, it says it's capable of leaning into turns just like a regular motorcycle (albeit possibly not as much). Also, when the Tesseract is stopped, it locks the arms to keep it upright.
so its a street atv, wow new thinking yamaha.
same some money and just stick a street motor in a raptor and throw some street tires and you go the same thing
If it converts to flyable body armor with the flick of a switch I'm all over dat.
@Jeremias:
No, no more Die Hard, no more Rush Hour, no more The Mummy, and no more Indiana Jones. These movies can all stay dead for all I care, and I hope they do. Otherwise they're just ruining a good movie/couple of movies for the all-mighty dollar.
That being said, where is Jaws 4? I mean the technology has finally caught up with the idea, and we don't have a Jaws 4? Though only if Stephen Spielberg directs it. Bring back Jaws! Boy I'm annoying, going off topic left and right.
nice to have one!
That bike will never be legal. Once a vehicle has four wheels it needs to meet NHTSA requirements and there is no way this think is going to meet crash requirements. If they made it so it didn't travel over 25 mph, this could be road legal. But what's the point.
If the thing works I'd love to see it in action.
wow! this thing reminds me of "street hawk" from the 80s.
[epguides.com]
As a Yamaha FZ6 owner I have to ask, what's the point of this, but I still want one.
Looks like the put an ATV on a diet.
The idea that quads (what this really is just with taller, more narrow wheels and a killer design) will turn into street legal vehicles in the US would, of course, require revision of the vehicle safety regs. It could happen with the addition of another class of vehicle called something like "single passenger". But all the advantages people think of like being more fun, no special license or being like a motorcycle but safer will probably not be true. The nimble nature of two wheels will not be able to be even closely reproduced on four. An unprotected pilot on four wheels is just as vulnerable as an unprotected pilot on two. And there will likely even be another layer of driver certification on top of motorcycle and automobile endorsement. I like motorbikes. I ride every day. I probably would never own something like this but I applaud the idea because it will make building energy efficient easier and help congestion on highways and parking lots with their smaller physical footprint. I'd rather see a 80 mpg hybrid single occupancy vehicle like that
