Polk Audio's latest HE audio system, the SurroundBar50, is 51 inches of speaker that gives you surround sound from just one speaker. The aluminum-covered unit contains nine mid/bass drivers with Neodymium magnets, three dome tweeters and a four-PC board crossover, and Polk's Stereo Dimensional Array (SDA) technology on the left and right front channels.
Measuring 51 x 4.5 x 5.1 inches, the SurroundBar50 comes with a bracket that you hang either above or below your TV, and will cost $1099.95 when it is released in October. [OhGizmo!]

Neat concept, but I just can't imagine 3D sound with this. There's a reason you put the satellites on the other side of the room.
Besides, a 1k price tag just doesn't suit my wallet.
OMG, a four PC-board crossover!
haha, this thing might be cool, but the fact that they use four PC boards is pure marketing mumbo-jumbo.
Surround sound from a single spearker? You sure you didn't mean 51ft, not inches?
Oh.
I thought you were just happy to see me. :(
What you can't see are the hinges so you can bend it around the entire room for that true surround sound experience. What craftsmanship!
For those without a dildo yet.
It blows. Yamaha's YSP-1000 is about the same price but actually works. Yes, THAT does surround sound from one speaker and damn good surround too. This? It's a really big ugly center channel. The 'SDA' technology? Tweeters wired out of phase, nothing more.
Dude!!! I so want one!!!
Buford's right, Yamaha has been doing this for years. But it's important to note that they do it not with "one speaker" as some have been saying, but an array.
The psycho-acoustics of tricking your ears into thinking you are hearing things from different locations is well understood at this point by audio-engineers, the Yamaha product being one example, and Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker another.
Can I borrow your time machine so that I can go into the future, come back, and report on how different items perform before they're released?
Do you think someone was trying to compensate for their small pen....uh...I mean feet. yea small feet.
