There's not much confirmation of this yet, but a source is telling us that TiVo is planning on releasing a Series 3-like HD recorder some time this fall. Whether this will have dual-tuners like the Series 3 is still unknown, but we're sure it will be gimped in some way in order to maintain interest in the higher-priced model.
Combine this with a vague quote we found from TiVo's CEO back in March, and we've possibly got something brewing. The quote: "We will be highly focused this year on launching a lower-priced, mass appeal High Definition product."

Your site is rendering like shit still!
Tivo is going the way of the dinosaur, they are expensive and gimp their set top boxes to make it difficult to transfer recordings to other devices. There is very little that they offer that my comcast box can't already do. Everyone wave bye bye to the dinosaur. I give em 5 years.
People who don't have tivo always say that.
Tivo is still far better than the DVRs offered by Time Warner and Cox (and I don't need $70 digital cable in order to use tivo). Plus, Tivo's own software lets you transfer recordings to other devices. (And there are several free and easy-to-use programs that automatically encode tivo recordings in Divx, PSP and Ipod formats).
schwnj is right, I can't part with my Tivo... so please give me a series2 like box with HD power and I'm there in a heart beat. I'd love a DirecTV compatible box, but since I don't see that happening something that just lets you pipe in a video signal and record would do.
I used to have Tive Series 2. While nice, My Dish DVR is also pretty nice and I don't really miss my Tivo. Monthly service is cheaper too.
I'm curious about how much cable companies charge for their DVRs. Personally I purchased an 80 hour dual tuner Series2 Tivo directly from Tivo and I bundled it with 3 years of Tivo service and the grand total was $330, which works out to approximately $9 a month.
I'm sure they're coming out with a lower-priced HD box - the CEO said so openly. I'm not so sure about 'sub-$300' though. I mean, the 180-hour S2DT is $199.99 I suppose they might possibly squeeze one down to $299.99, but I think $399.99 MSRP is more likely - giving resellers room for discounting. That's still half the Series3's MSRP, and it would come down from there.
If it is a lower-end companion to the S3, I'd hope the S3's price drops too - maybe a $600/$400 split, or $500/$300 if we're lucky.
I think any boxes we see from TiVo going forward will be dual-tuner - that's the market standard now and I don't see them going back to single-tuner now that they've phased out the S2 for the S2DT.
I heard the same thing. Still don't think I'd buy one, though.
I have an original TiVo and when they screwed up the DST change I went looking for a replacement and settled on an EyeTV Hybrid for $150. If you already have a computer, it makes a lot more sense to just add a tuner to it. I did also drop $100 for a larger hard drive, but that is still $50 less than this vague rumor and hundreds less than if I had to subscribe for an HD TiVo. The TiVo was awesome when it came out, but they haven't kept pace with the rest of the market.
Please, oh, please, do this. Credit Card is standing by.
Reading TiVo news in Europe makes me see what the Apple hype must look like from - er - Mars. So much interest in a DVR with a decent interface. Fanboys. Where's the iPhone news?
In the UK, we have the Sky+ HD box. Sure, you're tied to a $100/month subscription which goes directly to feeding Rupert Murdoch's winged monkeys, but it's SO USEFUL that no one seems to care. Still - it's just a box...
The 'killer app' for TiVo is 1/2 done.. they have the easy to use user interface.. they just don't have the Library. I've always felt they were gimped as well by the concept of user fees. It's what has held DVR's back from total market domination.
Advertising + media subscription model is what will make the DVR profitable. Imagine a Series 3 w/no monthly fees, but for $20/month you could have unlimited access to the Netflix + iTunes in the highest possible quality (HD + Lossless)library. Who would say no to that product mix?
i don't think TiVo is going anywhere soon. There are plenty of fanboys that will continue to buy the boxes for years to come. Aside from that, they already have their exit strategy lined up. They'll become purely an interface company once the hardware becomes too cheap for them to profit that way. Still...I'll stick with my Comcast box for $5/month.
I have a series 2 TiVo and an HD-DVR from Comcast. I prepaid for a year of service with the Tivo, which is why I still have it. It is leaps and bounds better than the Comcast DVR in terms of interface, but the fact that it now costs something like $20 a month means that I'll just have to suffer through the idiosyncrasies of the Comcast box.
It may not be smart, but it records and plays back HD content for relatively cheap.
I love you TiVo, but your product isn't that much better for me to pay that much extra.
My Tivo is 7 years old this month (happy birthday!). It's the best purchase I've ever made. I've been suffereing with this lame motorola HD DVR for 2 years now. If it weren't for the subscription changes I'd have a series 3. If they'd market the Series 3 for $450 with $250 lifetime I'd be all over it. ...but that ain't going to happen. A cheaper HD box might be an option for me (do I REALLY need 2 HD tuners?).
I've used TiVo for 1 full year, and I've used my cable company's DVR for 1 full year. Here's my opinion...
First of all, let me start this off by saying I loved my TiVo Series 2 more than anything I ever owned. I recommended it everyone I knew and talked about how much I loved it all the time.
It is because of this that I was going to buy the Series 3 the first day it came out. But then I saw its $800 price. I CAN afford it... that's not the problem. The problem is that I could be a trillionaire... there's no way I'm spending $800 on something my cable company gives me practically for free.
So, for the last year, I've been using my 8300HD Scientific Atlanta DVR and, while it obviously isn't nearly as pretty and user friendly as I know TiVo is, it's a dual tuner HD DVR that has done it's job perfectly fine.
Not to mention, it costs $10 bucks a month ($10 less than TiVo's monthly fee), the unit itself was literally FREE ($800 cheaper than TiVo) and I have the peace of mind of knowing that if it ever breaks, or if a newer version ever comes out... all I need to do is trade this one in for another one... for FREE.
The point I'm trying to make here is, if the Series 3 started at $300, I'd probably have 2 of them in my house right now. But it didn't, and instead TiVo sort of forced me away. During that year away, I gradually missed TiVo less and less. And now... now it's to the point where TiVo can come out with a $75 Series 3 tomorrow and I still wouldn't buy it. They've lost me. I'm gone.
But of course, that's just me.
No way it's going to be single-tuner.
This makes sense. The only way they'll compete with a Comcast box running Tivo software for $20 a month is if they release an even better box but keep the price around $300.
Please, please, please let this work without cablecards. Somehow. We don't have them in Canada 'cause our government is too lazy to find out what cablecards are. If it'd work here I'd buy one in a second.
I gave up HD 'cause I couldn't be without my TiVo. I'll watch crappy analogue cable on my HDTV before I'll have another Scientific Atlanta piece of garbage in my house!
The TiVo Rewards loyalty program has lowered the price of the Series3 to 75,000 points. It was originally introduced as at 85,000 points. According to a quick scan of Amazon and Best Buy, the retail price of the Series3 remains $799… though Amazon has priced it under $610.
