HTC Tattoo: Budget Android Phone Gets Slick Sense User Interface

Previously leaked as the "Click", HTC's Tattoo has replaceable covers that you can also design yourself. It runs Android with HTC's Sense interface (like the Hero), and has a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen (eek), 3.2-megapixel camera, MicroSD storage, and 3.5mm headphone-jack.

Update: Other key specs include 240x320 on screen resolution (QVGA), 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM, quad-band support, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM Radio, Digital Compass and G-Sensor.

HTC plans for the Tattoo to reach Europe in October, and the rest of the world in the months after that. It's possible the Tattoo could be cheap enough to cost nothing with a carrier subsidy/smartphone plan.

And hopefully a Sense UI update means it won't be as sluggish as we've seen in the past on the Hero.
If You Were Crazy Enough To Get a Gadget Tattoo, What Would That Gadget Be?

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.Extremely nerdy tattoos are popping up more and more these days. Not that you are crazy enough to get one, but let's say you blacked out after a drunken evening and woke up with a gadget tattoo. What gadget might it be...and where would you find it?

Keep in mind that tattoos of anything that falls under the nerd culture umbrella is acceptable—from physics equations to portraits of Bill Gates with the words "XOXO Forever" underneath. Bonus points if you actually have a tattoo in this category.

Neuma Hybrid Tattoo Machine: Even Tattoos Are Going Hybrid

We don't write about many tattoo machines here on Giz, preferring to keep our gelatinous arms free from skin-breaching contraptions. But the Neuma Hybrid has an interesting pitch.

The original Neuma was the world's first air-driven tattoo machine. Its design somehow promised a less painful tattoo (we're confused as to how since the needle is still a needle) and it was crafted from solid aluminum for easy medical-grade sterilization. The new Neuma Hybrid is lighter—a mere 3.7 ounces—and it operates both under air pressure and electricity...which is somewhat/almost/kinda/not really at all like your Prius.

On the spec sheet, it all sounds great. But do we have any tattoo artists in the audience who might care to elaborate? [RKS via Yanko Design]

I got this tattoo about 8 months ago. I believe it perfectly sums up my feelings towards George [Lucas]. I love Star Wars, but I wish George would retire and leave the series in better hands. Just thought you should see it. I love you guys! Keep up the good work at Giz!

Tattoo Doubles as a Blood Glucose Level Monitor: Rebellious Yet Cautious

A Cambridge laboratory has developed a special ink for tattoos that changes color based on glucose levels in the blood. On a related note, diabetes is now the hippest metabolic syndrome in town.

The ink is made up of a bunch of tiny spheres, about 120 nanometers across, that contain "the glucose detecting molecule, a color-changing dye, and another molecule that mimics glucose." Those molecules are moving around in the spheres, and when they near the surface, they grab onto either glucose or the molecule that mimics glucose. If they mostly latch onto real glucose, the ink (and consequently the tattoo) will look yellow, but if they grab the fake glucose, the tatt will look purple, indicating a low level of glucose in the bloodstream.

Apparently the tattoo itself doesn't need to be a full-sleeve naked pirate lady design or anything; it can be only a few millimeters across and get the job done. The tech is still a couple years off, but it's a much more immediate and constant monitor of the blood than having to prick and swab a few times a day. He got a tattoo with their Blue Monster mascot and slogan "Change the World or Go Home." But his loyalty could not save him from being laid off.

If it were me, I would be in an alley somewhere using my last $20 to have the tattoo carved off my arm by a drifter weilding a piece of broken glass—but not Dan. He remains optimistic:

Working at Microsoft has been the greatest experience of my life and I have no desire to forget about it. And even if I don’t get back into Microsoft right away (which is, by the way, my plan!), then I have a reminder that even outside of Microsoft, I need to do my best to change the world every single day.

Right...brace yourselves: The guys at Crackberry were running a "What would you do for a BlackBerry Storm?" contest, and they've got themselves a winner. A genuine new BlackBerry Storm-tattoo-toting winner. Ohgoodgodno. Check out the video of the <s>nutter</s> winner actually getting his tattoo, complete with "iPhone sucks" motto. And relish the delicious sight of the Apple-fan tattoo artist wearing an iPhone T-shirt, plus the final tat in closeup in the photos below.

Zune Guy Makes Yet Another Fantastic Life Decision

Zune Guy — arguably the greatest fanboy of our time — has decided to finally commit his acrimonious separation from his namesake to ink. So what does he do? He integrates the Zune logo into a tattoo of Dick Cheney as the Devil, where it serves as a makeshift inverted pentagram on the veep's forehead. As far as tattoos go, this not-quite-complete piece of agitprop is a minor improvement and much easier to explain — after all, Cheney isn't the most popular guy in the world, and people have at least heard of him.

Harder to explain will be Mr. Guy's crucial misunderstanding of what a pentagram looks like, and his apparent need to get tattoos that will by their very nature be completely irrelevant in a few years. In any case, Zune Guy clearly wants to engage with something bigger than consumer electronics, so I'm a little bit disappointed that he hasn't decided to throw his considerable weight behind one of the current presidential candidates. Forget Colin Powell — that would be a game-changer. [iPhone Savior - Thanks, Ry!]

Zune Tattoo Guy Asks Microsoft's Permission to Change Name to 'Microsoft Zune'

As if this Zune Tattoo guy couldn't get any crazier, he's actually starting the process of legally changing his name to "Microsoft Zune." As you'd suspect, Microsoft might have a problem with that, so Mr. Zune Tat called up tech support to ask their permission on whether it was OK. And for all of our enjoyment, Steve decided to record his call and put it up on YouTube. The result? The tech support line he talked to doesn't have any real information for him and they advise that he write a letter to legal. If you're interested, hit the jump for a tech support call that has all of the holding and none of the resolution that you'd normally get from your own tech support calls.

University Logo Tattoo on Human Hair: a Micro-Scale Rebellion?

What do you do if you have a focus ion beam microscope normally used to make nano-devices, a scanning electron microscope and some spare time? Well, you etch your university logo onto a human hair, of course! At least, if you're the Engineering Dept at McMaster University you do. It's not the smallest logo ever— that's an IBM one with 35 xenon atoms, I believe. But it's possibly the ickiest, and it's certainly high resolution. Impressive. We've only got one quibble: the uni logo, guys? I'm sure Giz readers would be more imaginative.

Now, this is done on a plucked hair by steering a beam of gallium ions over the surface to etch the 20-micron logo into the hair cells. But imagine you really could have your hair tattooed. No-one would see it, it would be just like painting the pilot inside a plastic airplane model: you'd know it was there. What would you have?
Fortunately, computer graphics artist Loic Zimmermann has developed a program that will allow users to get a look at what a complex design might look like on a 3D figure. If this technology catches on, the possibilities for pushing the art form are obvious. Let's just hope Zimmerman can refine his software to include a program that illustrates what that naked chick tattoo on your chest might look like 30 years and 3 cup sizes from now. The girl makes the dude's tattoos ooze mysteriously by getting him into a tantric embrace. My only confusion: with such a scary soundtrack, it kinda seems like she is draining away his life essence, and replacing it with black subcutaneous ink. Not exactly a selling point, Philips!

Idolator, our sister site that likes music (on iPods or not), had a visit in the comments from none other than Zune Tattoo Fan #1, who explained:

I am the Zune tattoo guy, Steven Smith, I would like to be able to put my 2 cents in an explain my 1st and 2nd zune tattoo as well as my 3rd tattoo I will be getting. As far as what Microsoft is doing for me, it isn't important, I did not get either tattoo to be rewarded later. But for your info I am being flown out to Redmond, Washington to have a meet and greet with the Zune Team, and to do an interview for [www.on10.net] so I think that more than makes up for my $80 tattoo. Also, I know I am fat:)

Steven, you sound like a nice guy, not one of those scary cultists that shake their fists at product announcements like book burners and get tattoos on their...wait.

Steven, I respect your dedication to both Zune and to Pepperoni Pizza, and your honesty about the whole thing. Just to let you know, whenever Engadget scoops me, I eat an ice cream sandwich, and boy are those guys good at gadget blogging. These days, I don't fit any of my pants except the sweats. Seriously, though, you're not that big.

However, you never explained why you love Zune so much you decided to get tattoos of the logo. And what is your third tattoo going to be? Jokes aside, I'd like to hear your answer.

Microsoft. Get off your cheap ass and give this guy a huge box of Zunes in every color, give him a Job in Zune PR, and give him lifetime subscription passes. –Brian Lam

I also notice that guy has shaved his handlebar mustache between now and then. We notice the little things, here at Gizmodo. –Brian Lam

Gizmodo How To: Recreate Britney's Head-Shaving Weekend Meltdown

Here's the right combination of gadgetry so you can meltdown just like America's favorite fallen idol.

Wahl "Balder" Ultra-Close Haircut Kit
Wahl's 26 piece hair clipper piece holds the number one spot on Amazon, but this set of trimmers is endowed with an overbite that gets your fades and flat tops so close you can feel the heat of the metal teeth nuzzling into your flesh. The gold trim honors Britney's trailer-lifestyle heritage. Yee Haw!

IdealSalon's All-In-One Tattoo Kit
Includes a Tattoo gun, a rainbow of ink, a foot pedal, 4 stainless steel tips, 5 disposable tips for your skeezy friends, and an aluminum case anodized in black. That's easily enough gear and ink to xerox yourself wrist and hip with the lips, and jesus-cross Britney has.–Brian Lam

T-Mobile Tattoos MOTORAZR V3s

Just launched from T-Mobile, these tattooed MOTORAZRs let everyone know that even though they've been around the block a few times, they can still break a pool cue over someone's head with the best of them. Designed by Ami James, the tattoo artist on Miami Ink, the dark grey "Dragon" and the pink "Cherry Blossom" still have the old RAZR V3's VGA camera, but work with T-Mobile's myFaves, which you can read more about here.

T-Mobile still doesn't have the MOTOKRZR, so if you want a RAZR, you're pretty much stuck with these. No word on whether these tattoos can be removed once they get married and have kids. – Jason Chen

Disappearing Tattoo Ink

We realize it was only inevitable that someone would develop tattoo ink that's easier to remove than the current kinds, which necessitate painful, expensive multi-session laser treatments that aren't always effective, but c'mon now: disappearing tattoos are to permanent body art what Britney's Las Vegas wedding was to the sacrament of holy matrimony. Expect a marked increase in stupid tattoos on sorority girls and frat boys when this product finally hits the market.
