Tokyoflash Concept Clocks Look Like Fun But Make My Brain Hurt

Tokyoflash revealed some concept clocks that will either delight or depress you (say, if you still can't figure out what time it is after staring at the damn thing for 10 minutes).

The Tokyoflash guys are good sports and looking for feedback from you, lovely readers, via an online survey. So if you find them too bewildering or eyesore, please perform your civic duty and speak up. The information gathered will then be used for product development and selected designs will hit the shelves. You could be a part of history.

Currently the collection includes a series of multipurpose clocks, such as ambient table lamps with subtle, animated textural designs. Some include the ever trendy iPod docks or have multiple time zone displays and calendar functionality. Others are structurally versatile enough to be be positioned on your desk, wall, or floor.
Vote Which Tokyoflash Concepts You'd LIke to See for Real

No, it's not one of Adam's Photoshop contests (but the premise could work). Tokyoflash has sent us twelve Bluetooth necklace concepts, and they'd like to know which three they should put into production.

I'm not sure that you could ever catch me wearing a Bluetooth necklace (that statement will come back to haunt me, I'm sure), but my vote would be for the dog tag, the credit card and the RRoD, with the AT&T logo as a close runner up since I'd rather see the design in stainless steel.

But what do you think?

Even if Tokyoflash watches aren't your cup of tea, it's rare that any company gives the public a chance to green light their designs. So have fun ripping 'em a new one in the comments.

The name Tibida indicates the three modes the watch can be put in; time, binary and date. Yes, it displays binary—Woz would be proud. So, how does it work?

• The hour-centric mode displays the hour in digits on the lower display and minutes on the upper, with each "minute LED" representing five-minute increments.

• The minute-centric mode displays the exact minutes as digits on the lower display, hours are shown along the top in a 12-hour format.

• The binary mode utilizes only the top display, with the first lit LED representing the number 1. This is then doubled periodically, up to 32. Arrangements of the indicated numbers can then be read to give the time.

Sure, you may need a computer science degree, as well as the $122 asking price, to be able to make proper use of the Tibida, but did you see what it looks like? Since when has utility come in the way of fashion for the image-obsessed Gizmodo readership? Available in either a polished stainless steel case, with a red, blue or black face or in a black plastic/orange combination, the only problem you are going to have, besides the whole time-telling thing, is picking a color to match your bloodshot, monitor-fixated eyes. And by interesting, I mean that you probably need a PhD in disco-light time-telling to be able to work out just what it is you're late for.
Tokyo Flash Oberon Watch Has a Name, Look Straight From Kubrick's 2001

Thanks to companies like Tokyo Flash (and Nooka, among others), I'm starting to care about watches again. The rise of cellphones many years ago made me see watches as pointless and boring, as they were all Rolex clones, or wanted to include a million pointless meters on the face. But watches like the Oberon get a second glance from me. Minimal, attractive and creative, the contrast between the watch and its display makes me want to stare at it forever. And in case you're wondering, dots on the outer ring are hours, dots on the second ring are single minutes and dots on the inner ring are blocks of 10 minutes. It's 14,900 Yen at Tokyo Flash. [Tech Digest]

Tokyoflash Kyokusen Watch's Series of Digital Tubes Confuses Noobs

Weird watchseller Tokyoflash is now shipping Kyokusen, another puzzle posing as a timepiece, and this one has a brighter digital tube LED display that gives you a wider viewing angle than ever. It's available in a variety of display colors, and you can also specify a case in either black or silver, with matching bands. See if you can figure out what time each of these watches is showing, and find the solution after the jump.

As you can see in the diagram above, the L-shaped group of indicator bars shows the hours, the circle shows five-minute increments arranged like an analog watch dial, and then there are four dots in the middle that each represent a minute within those five-minute increments.

So the answer to the puzzle above? The watch with the green LEDs indicates 9:34, the gold reads 10:35 and the blue is 9:48. This watch is just radical enough to be worth its $119.75 price.

At first glance, Tokyoflash's Geomesh watch is an indecipherable mess that looks like a fragmented traffic light. Upon further review, and a glance at the instruction manual, the Geomesh becomes less intimidating and its retro-future awesomeness comes forth. In short, green dots represent the hour, yellow dots represent 5 minute chunks, and each red dot represents one minute. If I talk nicely to it, I wonder if it will beam me back up to the Starship Enterprise at 9:29. The Geomesh comes out soon for $120.

Tokyoflash Barcode Black Looks Large and Awesome

If you didn't know about it already, anyone looking to pick up a really unique and inspired watch looks no further than Tokyoflash. Barcode Black, now available to the rest of us outside of Japan, is no exception to Tokyoflash's standard of rethinking how to tell the time. Could be that you're sitting there right now trying to piece together how exactly you could derive the time from this watch, but it's actually one of Tokyoflash's easier systems.

The two leftmost columns are for reading what hour it is, while the remain right columns tell the minutes. In the first column (from left to right), one LED blip means five hours, one hour for the second column, ten minutes for each LED lit in the third, and single minutes in the fourth. In the picture above, the time displayed is "10:15."

Barcode Black will cost you $180, but if you act right now it looks like you could score free shipping.

BPM Watch Helps You Spin Wax, Tell Time

TokyoFlash, everyone's favorite super-nerd watch designers, have a new offering: the BPM Watch. What makes it unique is the sweet BPM counter that can detect how many beats per minute the music you're listening to has.

It's designed for DJs who want to sync up songs they're mixing together, but it can just as easily be used as a pulse monitor for gym rats. It also has a built-in mini flashlight and a unique ability to tell you what time it is. And for a downright-reasonable $65, how could you go wrong?

EleeNo EG3 Watch

We just can't get enough of Tokyoflash's product lines here at the Giz, and the newly updated EG line is no exception. It gives us that combination of style and confusing lesser, stupid people that we just can't quit.

The EG3 is a fine-looking watch, sporting nine tiny glass windows through which you to decipher the LCD time (hour on top, 10 minute in middle and minute on bottom). Coming in three fairly obvious colors, you'll need to fork out $80 for the IQ boost. And soon, since these bad boys are limited edition.

Detail shots after the jump.

The Mugen has a digital LCD display and tells time in its own, unique way, as Tokyo Flash is known for.

Mugen tells the time via a series of spiraling blocks. Around the outer edges are 60 segments, indicating 1 minute each. They are grouped in 10's so it's easy to tell the time at a glance. The inner spiral of blocks represent 1 hour each.

The watch's LCD display also appears as different tints of color depending on the time of day—aqua blu when the sun is rising and dark blue when it is closer to midnight, for example. This watch is available for $84. –Travis Hudson

Feeding our clock jones is this Zero-G watch from Tokyoflash, showing you the time of day with an LCD that mimics the hands of an analog timepiece. Strangers won't have a clue about what time it is, but all it takes is a glance at that four-segment hour indicator, and the circular sweep indicators show you the minutes.

JLr7: Watch From Another Planet?

Here's another one of those cryptic watches that make you guess what time it is, the JLr7 by e35 whose little J and L-shaped LEDs seem to light up at random. Even its name seems arbitrary, but check out the top row of LEDs and you'll see: JLr7. How does it work? The first three rows of lights show the hours in a 12-hour format, the fourth displays quarter hours and the rest of the rows show minutes and seconds.

This must be how they tell time on another planet. Adding to its weirdness is a setting that lets you trigger an automatic animation every 15 minutes between 6 p.m. and midnight that makes it look like it's going bananas. It looks positively otherworldly with its gunmetal finish and alien characters; get it with your choice of blue or green LEDs. It's at TokyoFlash now for ¥9800, or $85.22. Check out more pics, plus a diagram showing how to read this puzzling watch:

Bizarre. I thought this would cost more than $85. – Charlie White

Tokyoflash Retrofit Watch: Looks Like The Future

When the writers of Gizmodo aren't diving into our Duck Talesesque sea of gold, we "spend" it. And we say "spend" because it's basically just throwing our money away on random items that offer us a really enjoyable week of just checking them out - before they are placed on our shelf and forgotten about until we move or die or something.

The Tokyoflash Retrofit watch is the perfect fling item. It features an angled green or red LED matrix display that animates when you toggle between time and date. Other features: it tells the time and looks cool. That's what it does. The watch comes in expensive names like Cylon Silver, Galactic Gold and will set you back $127.79. But we ask you, what's more important in life? Money, or temporary delusions of self-worth? –Mark Wilson

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you, this watch from Tokyo Flash is actually called the Pimp Jive Turkey. The positive note is that Tokyo Flash seems to be making watches that actually look like watches. This watch uses refractive mirrors, green LEDs and a convex camera style lens to make pretty special effects that displays the time. $135 for all of the Pimping Jive Turkeying that you can handle. – Travis Hudson

iPattern: Another Weird Watch

I don't know, man. These things are just getting annoying. I love TokyoFlash and all, but is there just some guy hunched over a big watchmaker's table dreaming up ways to piss off the people who want to read your watch?

The top of this watch shows the hours and bottom shows the minutes. It's got a sexy white case and costs $52.68. Not much else to say about this except that we suspect it's virtually unreadable.

Geek Chic: The Scope Watch

TokyoFlash brings you The Scope, an LCD display watch that achieves new levels of geeky-cool, but how difficult does time-telling have to be before it gets to be just goofy?

Press the scan control for the time of day, where The Scope springs into action, moving its x and y axis until it's honed in on the appropriate coordinates. The time is represented by the x-axis for hours and the y-axis for minutes.

Okay, that gets us to within five minutes of the time of day. Next, the bull's eye of four red LEDs on the right bring the watch's accuracy down to the minute level for each lit LED. Press the control again and it shows you the day/date. Available in gunmetal or silver, it's guaranteed for a year and sells for $131.

Hard Drive Dying Dance Track Winner

There were well more than 100 entries in this remix competition—and picking the winner was a tough tough decision. It's clear that the challenge of making music based on the sound of Hitachi hard drives failing was as much a reason to take part as winning the Tokyoflash Equalizer watch. So before announcing the winner, let's review the highlights:

Rap Wars:
Crizzash "All the MP3s I loved to play / Well at least the rootkit is out of the way"
vs.
Rootin' and Falootin' "So come aboard ladies / Your cap'n is waitin' / You can swab me poop deck if you know what I'm sayin'"

Best Samples or Vocals:
Please Don't Die

Runnner's up (the one's I kept going back to for another listen):
El Hardo Disko Morte

The winner, whose chill two-minute track is made entirely from the hard drive noises:

Congrats James Postlethwaite. E-mail me at tips@gizmodo.com to pick up your Equalizer watch.

Thanks to Tokyoflash for the watch, Odeo for the MP3 storage, DJ Hitachi for the hard drive failure sounds and to everyone else for taking part.

The deadline is past. Thank you for sending all your remixes.

There are 99 tracks available on Odeo. And a bunch of direct downloads can be found after the jump. There are some surprisingly groovy submissions for your listening pleasure. The genres cover everything from electronica to techno—and punk rock, rap, dub, country. It may take me through the weekend to pick a winner given all the competition.

Huge thanks to all the DJs, and especially Tokyoflash for supplying the Equalizer watch as a prize.
