Here's a great true story that happened to me recently.

I was talking to my Grandfather, who is well into his seventies, on the phone yesterday. He had to help my grandmother with something so he set the phone down for a minute and when he came back I heard, "ARE YOU THERE?"
I said, "Yeah grandpa, I'm still here."

He replied, "I CAN'T HEAR YOU VERY WELL!"

I speak up and reply, "You got your hearing aids on?"

I hear some rustling on the other end of the line then I hear him say, "There we go! I had the phone upside down."

Technology must be a tricky thing for old people.

@njdevil: So I'm American, but in the equivalent of high school in Ireland at the moment. This time next year I will be looking to get into college, and I'm pretty uncertain as to where I want to go/what I want to do.

I have always liked the idea of being a pilot, but it seems a risky path to take in this day and age. I also love media- animation, film, web design, photography, that sort of stuff.

I had this idea of going to college for Multimedia at nearby Cork Institute of Technology, and getting a job with some kind of web design or advertising company to pay for flight training. If being a pilot didn't work out, then hey, I was still in an area of work I was interested in.

Now, I am not so certain. I have an older brother living in New York telling me this will certainly lead to disaster. He believes that almost nobody will be able to get a multimedia-based job in a few years, as the tools to make websites become more user friendly the companies that make them will become obsolete. He also believes that going to a "crap school" like that will make it impossible to get a job with an airline if I decide to go down that route. He suggests I go to Trinity (best university in the country, but has no courses that appeal to me), or a get an aviation-based degree in the America.

The problem I see with that, is that I'm putting all my eggs in one basket so to speak. If the airline industry is so bad in a few years that I can't get a job, then I will end up in an assload of debt, with a degree that doesn't really qualify me for anything else.

I'm sure some of you work in these industries. Are they as bad as my brother would lead me to believe?

I'm still going ahead with my original plan, but now looking at doing multimedia at a better school abroad instead, maybe University of Western Sydney ([future.uws.edu.au])

Any advice or opinions are welcome.

@njdevil: I've found myself in a (somewhat) similar situation, except a little further along (I am a junior at university); I'm going to school for something completely unrelated to what I enjoy/would possibly enjoy doing as a career (which is multimedia based).

As for getting a job doing web/graphic design, I would assume it to be somewhat difficult. There will be, however, a need for these types of jobs for some time--all you need to do is browse the internet for some short period of time and gaze at the abundance of horribly designed web-pages: generally pages designed through these "user-friendly" web design programs by people with little-to-no design experience. For the multimedia path, what it comes down to is rather simple: are you any good at it? If you are good at something, you will generally be able to find a job doing it (even more likely if you have a degree doing it--that little slip of paper testifying that you know something).

This last little question, however, is obviously the little stumbling block. The best thing you can do, I feel, is just work at it as a hobby now. Design and build a website for fun; find some tiny company with a terrible website and offer to build them a nice new one for free.

As for becoming a pilot. I certainly have no expertise in this, but this seems like a basket in which you must place all of your eggs. I would think that you could go to school for something completely unrelated, and get a Pilot's license afterward. I cannot, however, say what effect this would have on your chances of receiving a job as a Pilot.

I will say that my experience in College has been diminished by the simple fact that I really don't care about what I am learning--there is something to be said for chasing a job that you truly want. One thing I would suggest is looking at more traditional Universities that also have an art/design department; a school where you can mix design and more traditional classes together (maybe pick up a double major.. not sure how that works in Ireland).

My two pennies worth, at least.

@njdevil: If you really want to be a pilot, join the Air Force. People who have military flight training find jobs much easier than any other kind of pilot. I disagree with your brother about websites. The trick there is to learn how to make things common people won't be able to. So learn HTML5 and learn things on the fringe that programs can't do or can't do well. While more people will be making websites, most will be shite. Media animation, then, is a good route. Whatever you do, don't do photography. That truly is a dying job.

@njdevil: how did you get yourself into an irish lifestyle, man?

and myself, I'm at Penn State University after spending the first 18 years of my life in the midwest. I'm studying aerospace engineering out here. I sure hope that the airline industry won't die!

Living in the minneapolis/St. paul metro area, I had tons of friends who had parents who worked for Northwest Airlines, as MSP airport was one of their biggest hubs. And then it got bought out by delta airlines. needless to say, there was definitely a bit of job loss and relocation, and the constant strikes and protests by so many of the unions has created a bit of an uneasy balance within the job market at the airport.

I myself know a few pilots and it seems like most of them have experience in the air force or similar. I'm not sure how much that appeals to you, but it certainly provides the instruction and experience to land a pilot job almost anywhere, and that's without paying tuition. I know at least in the USA armed forces you need at least a bachelor's degree to become an officer (in most cases) and to become a pilot you definitely need to be an officer.

In my mind, air force would be an ideal branch to go into, as you're not a grunt on the ground, and you will get experience around some of the most engineered objects in the world, some of the most complicated pieces of machinery ever created by man. It's definitely not for everyone, though. If you have glasses or some other sort of physical debilitation (even minor) it's tough to become a military pilot. But I feel like it really would be the experience of a lifetime, and it would probably set you up with something you love for a long long time.

All i can say is that you should get as much information as possible, and you should do research as much as you can. Post on here. We've got your back

@Nathan Obbards: @RT100: Ireland's an OK place, it's going to be tough to get used to the drinking age being 21 when I leave.

The air force is a no-go unfortunately, I don't meet the physical requirements. It would have been the first place I went to, looked great.
