Unconfirmed Flyer Shows 3G 16GB iPhone for TMO Germany

An alleged (as in probably photoshopped) leaked advert, suspected to be from T-Mobile Germany, indicates a 16GB iPhone with 3G support (HSDPA and UMTS), shall be making its way to German shores for 12th November 2007.

The advertisement goes onto to stipulate possible download speeds of 3.6Mbps and a $687 price tag. The purchase of the phone would also come with an iTunes voucher, various call plans will be on offer, but unlimited data plans will apparently make their way into Germany. The call plans will range from $69-$96/month, with more inclusive minutes and text messages being the reason for the price gap. European carriers have not as yet been officially announced, but unofficially the Financial Times listed T-Mobile as the selected carrier for the device within Germany. Obviously, this must be taken with a huge mountain of salt, but the information for the best part does corroborate with well with what is to be expected, with a few surprises chucked in for good measure. If this is V2, expect the US model to follow within a similar time frame. We are calling this nothing more than a rumour. Though it almost certainly is fanboy PS work, the spec makes us happy, so we've got our fingers crossed.[Electronista].

  • kewl! nawt...

  • I just got a woody.

I've been waiting, and this is what I've been waiting for. I hope we get it.

  • Remember though - if us Europeans don't get a 3G iPhone, the internet capabilities outside of WiFi would be pointless really. You think EDGE is slow? We've not even got that...

  • So why does the advert say "APPLE IPOD 16 GB" and not "APPLE IPHONE 16 GB"??

Are you drunk or hungover Haroon?

  • This is fake. "Apple iPod 16GB"? I thought this was for the iPhone. FAKE!!

  • Fake! "Apple iPod 16GB"? I thought this was the iPhone. FAKE!

  • don't care...music and video just drain the battery on a phone.

  • I think it's fake. especially with the iPod 16GB part. Seems like someone was photoshopping and got all mixed up. I will believe there is a 16GB 3G iPhone when I see Steve Jobs announce it.

  • The advert only mentions the term 'iPod' in the context of the German word 'integrierter' which means integrated. The iPhone being a less hyped product in Europe than in the US I could understand why they choose for the reference to the popular Ipod as being integrated in 'a phone'.

  • @RetepNamenots: did you not look at the picture?
HSDPA and UMTS are both faster than EDGE.

Hell, with 3.6Mbit/s HSDPA, the Wifi would be redundant.

  • @ALLSTARECHO: I am both drunk and hungover...*passes out*

Seriously though, the iPod labeling is a minor point. Carriers this side of the pond are continually making similar gaffs. What iPod would a call plan be useful for? That said it could well be PS work, with the headline present as a double bluff. We just think it is note worthy, so we're letting you in on it. Cheers.

  • 500 Euros AND a price plan?!

In Europe, we're used to getting GOOD phones free with our price plans.

  • @Collins1: Apple are not allowing operators to subsidise the cost of the iPhone with the call plan, as is usual for us Europeans. Check the FT link above.

  • If this were actually coming apple would have announced it at their last show.
I'm just saying this because i just bought one and i want to make myself feel better.

  • yea im not sure about the pricing, thats crazy... with contracts euro peeps get much nicer phones for much cheaper... I have yet to see an n95 over here in the US, but even kids in the dorms when I was in Germany had an n95 this summer, came with their cell plan. Although I had to show a guy how to get the maps to work w/o a data plan...

Anyway I would like to point out the main description of the phone saying it is the "cult phone from the US".

Anyone else think that the whole ipod thing is turning (or has turned) into a cult thing? Could somebody do us a favor and look at the percent of posts on giz that are about iphones and ipods?

  • 500 euros, little steep there. what's that like $800?

  • If you look at the metadata, you see the image was made this morning slightly before the posting using photoshop cs on a mac.

  • Its a fake. The "T-Online dots" in the lower row are too close together, and its says "Apple iPod 16 Gb" and not "iPhone"...too many little faults for an professional advertisement.

  • Sorry for the typos. ^^

  • Image of OMG! Ponies! OMG! Ponies! at 06:21 PM on 09/08/07 *

If this is true, I just have to say...

    America: we've been pwned.

  • @mr.Purple

Just having photoshop in the metadata doesn't mean an image is fake. Photoshop is commonly used to resize and optimize images to be placed on a web site... just like this one.

Photoshop can be used to alter photos, but don't make the mistake of thinking that it doesn't have other legitimate uses including allowing T-Mobile designers to create real ads.

Do you really think all the millions of photoshop users spend all their time creating fake apple products?

  • The T-Mobile logo is old, if you compare it to the current branding on their web-sites. A fake, but it would be nice if this was the iPhones first European outing.

  • I'm guessing this is fake, unless the T-mobile graphics people are getting really lazy

  • Using "ipod" in the ad is probably just for product recognition (maybe 'iphone' didn't get as much media hype in Germany as it did here in the states - however, all the world knows the 'ipod' by now). Of COURSE it will be 3G in Europe, as that's what they use over there (we can envy all we want, but they have a more robust cellular system over there, and have led us for years in per capita cell phone usage stats, from what I've heard - correct me if I'm wrong please). I'll be over there from mid November, and if I have the chance to check this out (with pics of course :^) I'll let y'all know.

  • Does anyone else also notice the text hidden at the bottom? It says "MacBxxx". I can't make out the rest.

And actually right now T-Mobile already offers 49€ monthly fee with 200 minutes included. However it does not include 100 free sms nor unlimited data transfer. So it would actually be very generous of T-Mobile to offer such tariff for iPhone ( in other words, IMPOSSIBLE! )

  • This is the first time I'm going to say this but *cringe* I'm happy England is technically Europe.

    That felt wrong.

  • Even if this is fake, it seems more and more likely that the product being described (16GB iPhone with 3G) is inevitable.... it would explain why there is a 16GB iPod Touch but a similar 16GB iPhone has not yet been announced (if all Apple was going to do was increase the capacity, they probably could have unveiled an updated iPhone at the same time..... but if they're combining that with 3G, it makes more sense). I would wonder though if they would make 3G a differentiator though (i.e. keep the 8GB iPhone at $399 with EDGE, and have a 16GB 3G iPhone at $599).

  • I don't see no front camera for 3G videocall..

and plus, just because it's in German so it must be true eh?

shape up and get on das damn boot!

  • 1st the $200.00 and now this.

    Fanboys pwn3d

  • Proof to the contrary; O2 is one of the networks supposedly getting the iPhone. They're rolling out EDGE at present... this is a not even very good fake. Anything T-Mobile would mention web'n'walk, as well as their Hotspot network. They also haven't done L, XL, XXL plans... That's an O2 Germany thing with their Genion plans, I REALLY can't see T-mobile copying them especially on something like the iPhone.

  • Sorry Haroon, but that iPod 16Gb line just doesn't fit - it's not what the device is called, it's called the iPhone, and EVERYONE in Europe has heard of it. The layout is also terrible.

Just because someone makes a fake ad confirming everything we expected doesn't mean it isn't a fake. Know what I mean?

  • I've heard a lot about the fact that people believe the US consumer will be seeing a 3G phone, but I don't think we will even though the Europeans will. We might see the SSD upgrade, but I don't think we'll see 3G/HSDPA until June '08.

What I can't wait for is A2DP support, can't someone write a firmware flash to enable this? Or is it not that easy?

  • I mean seriously... Does ANYONE actually believe that Apple would let T-Mobile anounce this product as an iPod rather than an iPhone???? That is completely absurd.

I live in chile (south america) and my 80-something-year-old grandmother knows what an iPhone is (seriously). It must be one of the most known and talked about products in the world! So dont come tell me T-Mobile prefered to call it an iPod WTF. Bad bad fake ad......

  • I have to concur with the fake. The branding and logo usage is completely wrong (not to mention the iPod part) as well as the line of dots at the bottom. Sloppy or not, T-Mobile wouldn't let their first advert for a product at hot at the iPhone look like this.

  • If it ends up real, then Apple is following the Sony PS3 doctrine and dumping 8GB iPhones prior to introducing 16GB iPhones priced back at 599.00 - or maybe 499.00.

  • Its in german, read it, it says APPLE IPOD 16 GB, its the IPOD TOUCH ! - TheBosnian

  • The iPhone name might be tied up in Germany. I picked up a super-cheap Skype USB handset that was branded as an "iPhone;" manufactured by Sunnyline, a (now dead?) company out of Germany.

The manual for the phone gave sunnyline.net as the URL; just a 404 there now.

Anyway, I'd also suspect that the ad was a fake. But my $10 iPhone is the real deal!

  • Thank you for NOT posting my comment. No wonder Engadget and BoyGeniusReport is better than Gizmodo!

  • WTF? T-Mobile was first approached for the iphone in American and TURNED IT DOWN because of their dedication to the sidekicks. Now, German T-Mobile will have it and all the loyal TM customers stateside get the shaft?
    This disgust me.

All of this blathering aside (real or fake): I just got back from 3 weeks of traveling in Portugal and Italy. Basically, anytime I used my iPhone, it drew a crowd. They want it so bad, they were trying to trade their Nokias for it. They would even call their friends to say they saw one in person. When I said what I paid for it, plus the monthly charges, they didn't seemed fazed. Maybe because the Euro is kicking the dollar's ass? Dunno. Anyway, it will sell over there like crazy. They seem more excited about it than Americans did before it came out here. Also, in case anyone was wondering, it worked great over there. Every feature worked, and it saved my ass on many occasions, especially with google maps in cabs or when I rented a car in Italy.

@johnnyrandom: Have fun with your $2000 phone bill

  • Image of johnnyabnormal johnnyabnormal at 11:04 PM on 09/08/07 *

@omg-ponies: Actually, I just got the bill. It was almost 500 bucks for almost a month. Considering how many international calls, sms, emailing and google mapping I did, I was actually pretty surprised the att death star didn't rape me for more. Two (three?) words for you: Tax write-off.

  • we need faster internet. wireless faster internet...

  • Hmm, well if the iPhone doesnt go into the European and Asians markets with 3G, it won't do that well..

  • well, the 3.6 MBps looks quite legit, but don't mistake that with the actual numbers you will get. I am in Portugal on 3.6 HSPDA, and download speeds are not anywhere near 3.6, let alone upload. So WiFi still kicks 3G's arse. Some providers here actually advertise with 7.2 max. That might be interesting...

    ------------------

Äh, where do you live in Europe? I'm living in Germany and we got all that lovely stuff:
    - UMTS
    - GSM/GPRS
    - EDGE
    - HSDPA
    - HSUPA
    ...

Great that I did NOT import an iphone from the US ;-)

  • @SOLDSTATIC

I have to disagree, you can get a Good phone free with a plan here, but if you want a Great New phone you are going to pay a lot of cash together with the plan. I dont know how it is in Germany but in Denmark the sales tax plus the fact that phone companies cant bind a customer for more than 6 months will probably mean that the iPhone will be very expensive and will come with a plan

  • fake fake fake. As someone noted, the spacing of the dots surrounding the TMobil logo is woofed compared to the branding on the Tmobil.de site.

And the whimsical jaunty angle that they use to display the price boxes is a different jaunty angle than TMobil uses. This angle does not change throughout their branding, and the real one is jauntier!

Look for more graphics gaffes. I'm sure they're there. Anyone else see some?

  • Read my lips: THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A 3G iPHONE FOR EUROPE AT LAUNCH. The next-gen iPhone will launch in Japan and/or Korea. The next-gen iPhone will have features that'll make the current model look like ass. The features will be network dependent, and won't work here. This is consistent with most Japanese and Korean mobiles at present. We will revert to our default mode of hating the Japanese and Koreans for having mobile technology so far in advance of the US and Europe.

    sooth sayers, gotta love em.

  • Fake fake fake, the collors of the bars are different and if you ook at t-mobile.de you can see that they have a new kind of advertisement.

  • I checked the exchange markets and did the conversion...8GB American = 16GB in Europe.

  • Yesterday I walked into a T-Mobile store here in Leipzig and asked about the iPhone and plans. The clerk told me, she was sorry, but the have no information about it *yet*. Seems like an unofficial confirmation to me...

  • @yogibimbi:

Yes but Wifi isnt everywhere like 3G is, I have the option of Wifi and 3G (HSPDA) on my phone and never use the Wifi because whenever you need to use it, Wifi is nowhere around. Think about it Wifi is pretty useless for mobile internet. Yes sure if you are going to download anything big then Wifi is far better but that would be rarely - I can stream video very well use 3G - so its plenty fast for its purpose.

  • Guys I was a little sceptical about the branding however its really isnt different at all, looking at my current T-mobile bill. I think thi design is for a pamphlet - so bright and gaudy is the order of the day. I think its real. Anyway whats with all these people constantly saying fake to everything - half the people/dumbasses called the nano fake - and now look at the result.

  • Yay finally an iphone for us europeans, and...
it pwns the US Iphone =):)

  • @BUFORD T. JUSTICE
you wrote: They also haven't done L, XL, XXL plans...
I say: Theyre doing it, my current contract is T-Mobile Max with Web'n'Walk XXL, before I had Relax 100 XL with T-Mobile Data S...

I don't think this is legit because of the screwed photoshop on this one, T-mobile has been a corporate design "nazi" for everything they have from shops to online and everything else. Thats not even anything near the actual t-mobile font.

But even more interestingly is below the pricetag for the calling plans "Bis zum 12.12 im Telekom-Vorteil" which translates to "Until 12.12. as Telekom-rebate" which makes it even more fake, because for calling plans we have the "Regulierungsbehörde" (Agency for Regulating Transmissions on every band from CB to Phones) who will have to allow such things as "flatrates" and they only allow it until the first of the month, not in the middle. I call BS on this one.

Did anyone notice that the filename is "ipad.jpg"?
And there a more errors like the "Z.B." correct German would be "z.B." The necessary legal texts are completely missing, the logo must be aligned left, the basecolor has to much yellow in it (23% to much) and for it to be a print-ad it would have to be converted from cmyk to rgb which didn't happen. The top-claim is not centered. And "In alle Handynetze..." (to all carriers) cellphone plans are not allowed in germany either.
