Manual Firmware Upgrade for Impatient G1 Owners
If November 11th seems like way too long to wait for T-Mobile's RC29 upgrade for the G1, there is a way to manually force an upgrade. It's awfully easy, too: just download the update, move it over to a MicroSD card, and the hard work is pretty much done. More » -

Question of the Day: How Often Do You Upgrade Your Laptop?
We have talked about updating your cellphone in the past, but after witnessing the excitement surrounding a possible MacBook event on October 14th, I began to wonder whether or not there are a lot of people out there that buy a new laptop every year. After all, for most of us frequently updating a laptop would require a major financial investment. So, once again I have a two part question for you: How often do you update your laptop, and why do you usually make the change? More » -

Canon's Moonlit Teaser Advert Hints at EOS 5D Mark II in Highlights
Moody, very moody, and quite serious: that's how I'd label the new teaser from Canon that gives the merest hints of an upcoming "serious" EOS camera. Have a look at that bulky shoulder and the smooth curve over the pentaprism mount—classic high-end EOS right there: the apparent lack of pop-up flash is the give-away. Clearly it's time for Canon to draw attention away from Nikon with its swanky new D90, but what's it got ready for us under the "destined evolution" banner? Best guess so far is a 5D upgrade, but over to you in the comments, EOS fans. [Canon] -

Motorola's Q Going Windows Mobile 6.1 Through AT&T
The Motorola Q is finally getting the Windows Mobile 6.1 treatment through AT&T, who's stores are said to be taking in shipments of a new silver version of the handset. This is good news for enterprise customers who are tied into the WinMo world. No word yet on when these will hit the shelves, or if there will be an upgrade available for current AT&T Q9h owners, but it's likely we'll hear something soon. [BGR] -

Windows Mobile And Symbian S60 Get Google Maps Upgrade With Transit Info
Windows Mobile and S60 users get an update to Google Maps this week that includes public transit stops as well as user star ratings for local businesses. The free upgrade shows not just where stops are for particular transit lines but also allows you to incorporate them into building your route. Blackberry users have had this functionality for a few weeks now and it's likely a feature that will be updated for most other mobile operating systems in the next few weeks. [Google Mobile Blog] -

Cool Tip: iPhone 2.0 Software Has Built-In Screen Capture
You've probably seen the cool screen shots we've got all over Gizmodo today and wondered to yourself what tool we're using to make them. We're not using one, because the iPhone 2.0 software has a built-in screen capture shortcut. Hold the "home" button, then hit the "power/sleep" button, and presto, a capture of your screen is in your photos. This doesn't work in the 1.1.4 or earlier versions, so you'll need to upgrade, but chances are you already have. -

People Who Sold Their iPhones May Not Be Eligible For Subsidized iPhone 3G Upgrade
Update: Looks like our the rep at AT&T gave us the wrong info despite double-checking the situation. If you recently sold your phone but haven't purchased another phone through AT&T with a subsidy and renewed a contract, then you're still eligible for a subsidized iPhone 3G at $199/$299. Even if you shoved your SIM into a temporary phone while you wait out the launch. If you have purchased a new phone with a subsidy, you're not eligible for another subsidy. Glad we cleared this up! Question of the Day: How Often Do You Replace Your Cellphone (and Why)?
Like many current iPhone owners, I have been tossing around the merits of upgrading to the 3G version when it hits on July 11th. The debate about whether or not it is truly worth it has gone back and forth since the official announcement, but the bottom line is that I am an early adopter. I have come to accept this about myself and what it can mean for bank account—but many others take a completely different approach. The iPhone debate aside, I have a related two part question for you today. First off: how often do you replace your cellphone? And second: Why do you usually make the change? More » -

Windows 7 Will Have Same Foundation as Vista, Be Mostly Secret Until Launch
Microsoft's Windows chief Steven Sinofsky gave an interview to CNet News, throwing out some tidbits of knowledge on what's to come in Windows 7. Of the few details Steven actually gave out, the most interesting one is that it won't be using MinWin, a tiny Kernel that was supposed to replace the one in Vista. Instead, they're going to use an "evolutionary improvement" to Vista's, and have the exact same driver and software support as before. No XP -> Vista upgrade fiasco repeat. More » -

Microsoft Cuts Vista Prices, XP Still Better
Looks like Microsoft is trying another push to get Vista Ultimate running as your OS of choice. The top-end operating system will receive a price cut from $399 to $319, whilst the upgrade version will now retail at $219, a savings of $40 on the original price. Vista Home Premium will also be dropped in price, from $159 to $129. If you were holding out, now seems like a good time as any to take the Vista plunge, or stick with XP SP3 because it kicks Vista-ass. Your call. PS3 DivX Update Coming 'Very Soon'
We met with DivX earlier today to discuss their upcoming plans, and one of the topics that came up was support for the PS3 console. According to the company, they expect the previously announced firmware update to hit the PS3 soon, which will enable full DivX support for the console. Though no specific time frame was given for this upgrade, their particular emphasis on saying it was coming soon leads us to believe it's "coming in a week or two" soon, as opposed to "4 months down the road" soon. Best Buy Replaces Backordered $99 HD DVD Players With Newer Model
In a move so not Best Buy-like we had to double check, Best Buy is upgrading backordered Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD players to the newer and more expensive HD-A3 model. This stems from a total sellout at the $99 price point when Best Buy pricematched Wal-Mart's $99 pre-Black Friday deal with their own sub-$100 player. But now that the HD-A2 is discontinued and lots of orders are placed and not filled, Best Buy is doing the Fonz and giving people lucky enough to get orders in a thumbs-up to the HD-A3 (which actually isn't even all that much better than the A2). PC Dice Give You Saving Throw Against Hardware Failure
The DIY PC enthusiasts among you (we used to be one, years ago, before we got an actual job) know what a crapshoot it is upgrading bits and pieces of your rig to stay up to date with the latest games. With these PC Dice, however, you can take all the guesswork out of what components need to be upgraded. Just take the dice, which have operating systems on one die, parts/problems on another, and solutions on a third, and roll to see what your next step is. $27 a set means they're actually cheaper than most components you can purchase for a computer anyway, which makes for a great Xmas present for your favorite computer nerd. AT&T 8525 Finally Gets Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade
The official AT&T 8525 upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 is finally here after months and months of delay. You can download and install it directly from the HTC website (as opposed to the AT&T website), but you only have from November 1 to February 1, 2008 to do so. You'll probably still be able to find the ROM online after the deadline, but you can take 25 minutes out of your schedule to update before then. Even if you're planning on ditching the phone and upgrading to its WM6-having big brother, the Tilt, you might as well upgrade your old phone now to increase its Craigslist resale value. Either that, or you can offer up your body as a bonus like everyone else on Craigslist does. [HTC - Thanks Rich!] -
