Special Dongle De-Bricks Dead Wiis, Loads Any Homebrew

Internally, Nintendo uses a tool called a "Waikiki adapter" to boot Nintendo Wiis in recovery mode—bricked or not. Now one modder has apparently duplicated the device, a simple flash drive that fits in the GameCube memory port of the Wii, and set a demonstration to some righteous 80s guitar riffs. If commercialized, not only could such a device make homebrew a whole lot less risky—it could usher in a whole new era of Wii piracy as you can load any code you want from this recovery menu...which would be horrible and awful and evil, of course. French Train Operator Trials RFID Payment Card with USB Connection

No matter the fuss about RFID hacking, France's national train operator SNCF is trialing a single-user RFID payment system for journeys on its network. The Weneo card is no flimsy card with a simple embedded chip however: it's a thick gizmo with 4GB aboard and a USB plug. Shoving it into a PC takes the user directly to SNCF's website, where they can charge up the card's credit. Sounds all very groovy, but since the card also contains a chunk of personal data, like status as a student or senior citizen or "amount of money the cardholder has available for purchases" (why the heck is that there?) it strikes me as something that'd be pretty worrying to lose/get hacked. On trial for 1,000 users currently. [RFIDJournal via Nowhereelse—in French]

USB Can-Shaped Humidifier Mixes Weirdness with Moisturising Power

This isn't the first USB-powered humidifier you've seen, but it may be the weirdest: it comes shaped and painted like a drink can. It uses ultrasound to generate "cool, moisturizing steam" at the rate of 50ml per hour, which may sound attractive to you if your office environment is one of those over-air-conditioned ones. Though, nowadays in this crazy world, having a can on your desk connected to a computer and giving off bouts of "steam" is probably something you want to explain to your office mates if you don't want to cause a panic. Yours, from Brando and in several can colors for just $24. [Brando]

Hallucinogenic Eye Candy USB Lollies Take Your Brain to That Special Place, For Real

Mmm, mind-bending USB lollipops, the "delicious new confectionary uses cutting edge Sensory Substitution Technology to transmit vivid emotive images into your mind's eye." Wait, what? Tripping via USB? Shockingly, it might actually be legit. More »

question of the day

Question of the Day: How Many USB Ports Are You Using?

If you are anything like me, you have waaaay too many gadgets plugged into your USB ports. I have a hub of course, but it is still hard to keep up with the insane amount of stuff you can plug in these days. That having been said, I am curious to know how bad things have really gotten. So, how many USB ports are currently in use on your computer? More »

Samsung's Black Edition Credit-Card Sized 1.8-inch HDs Are Tiny, Shiny

Samsung's taking its large-capacity 1.8-inch HDs (found inside the Macbook Air, iPod, etc) and throwing them into this sleek bus-powered credit-card-sized casing, which looks to be about as small a form factor we're going to see for a 1.8-inch drive. They're only available in Asia at the moment, and on the high end (120GB) they're pricey (almost $300, but available on Chinese sites for considerably less). On the low end, a 20GB version that can basically fit in your wallet is around $45—not bad, if you're not feeling the flash route. And the form factor is pretty hot; "The Storage World In Hand," indeed. [Everything USB via Gadget Lab]

Headless Teddy Bear USB Drive Combines Kiddy Nightmares, Storage in One

Ages ago we showed you a DIY version, but now the removable-head Teddy Bear USB drive is a real product, ready to trigger-off those childhood nightmares all over again. The little guy is around 3 x 3.75 inches, is USB 2.0, stores 1GB inside its teddy guts, and costs $17. Not much else to say. [Geekalerts]

Crayola EZ Type Keyboard: When Normal Keyboards Are Just Too Confusing

There are only four acceptable reasons I can think of for buying this $30 dollar Crayola EZ Type keyboard: 1) You're a little slow. 2) You're under the age of five (and still maybe a little slow). 3) You have a kid under the age of five (and you're both a little slow). 4) You really, reeeeally hate the offset alignment of standard keyboards. If you're not buying for any of the above reasons, you're probably a pedophile who knows no child can resist a bunch of bright colors and the Comic Sans font. Shame on you, and may God have mercy on your soul. [Crayola via Red Ferret via BB Gadgets]

NSFW: USB-Powered MIA Vibrator Is Discreet, Has No On-Board Storage

Fleshbot's got a review up of LELO's MIA, which is a discreet (albeit vibrator purple) USB-powered vibrator. Is it good? Lux sure thinks so, and compliments it on its "several levels of vibration as well as three different settings of pulse patterns," something usually not found in smaller, non cricket bat-sized vibes. Wooden Animal USB Drives Are Tired of You Inserting Your USB Connector There

These hand-carved wooden animal flash drives are the latest in the tradition of semi- to fully perverse animal USB sticks. While this time the cute definitely outweighs the eww, Japanese designers Monodo just couldn't help themselves when it came time to select the connection point for these 1GB drives. Joining this little schnauzer is an elephant, swan, hippo and little piggy, all sharing the same unfortunate hook-up location. They can be yours in a few weeks for around $70. IOGear's USB to VGA Kit Puts Wireless Gap Between PC and Monitor

Combine this little gizmo with a wireless USB hub and you could almost have your PC in a separate room to you: it's a wireless VGA cable. The USB to VGA kit consists of a transmitter dongle and a receiver with a VGA-socket. It's probably aimed more at swanky PC-projector setups, since it can cope with video of up to 720p quality over a range of 30-feet, and sadly is only compatible with Windows XP and Vista machines. Due in September for around $230. [TFTS]

Chrome USB Joypad Is Fingerprint Magnet (Might Be A Real Magnet Too)

PC gamers with a slight sense of style might find this chrome joypad from Dream Cheeky worth a look. It's got all the necessary buttons for some gaming streamlined console-esque gaming on PCs, plus a rubberized grip in the back to fight slippage during intense NES emulator sessions (sorry, no update: definitive Mac support WAS mentioned). Pricing info wasn't available, but here's some free Gizmodo advice as they hammer that detail out: Cheap. [Dream Cheeky via Technabob]

NEC Wireless USB Prototype Just As Fast As USB 2.0

Wireless USB has finally begun to match regular USB 2.0 speeds, making our inevitable launch into a life untethered by the confines of copper and rubber cabling all the more forthcoming. At the Fall 2008 Intel Developer Forum, NEC unveiled a WUSB prototype that transfers at speeds of 200Mbits per second. The company didn't mention the effective range or when it plans on commercializing its new technology, but it's still exciting news for all of us who have trouble finding our desks under the tangle of our various USB doohickeys. Art Lebedev's Folderix Finger Folder Flash Drive On Sale

We got our first look at the Folderix folder-shaped USB drive from Art Lebedev when it was in the concept phase. It took over a year to bring to market (that's Lebedev for you), but it appears that they took that time to subtly streamline the quirky little drive. You can pick up a 4GB now in yellow, blue or purple for $55. [Art Lebedev via Electronista]

World's Cheapest 64GB USB Stick Costs Only $111

For the world's cheapest man, we present the world's (supposedly) cheapest 64GB USB stick. It's assembled just for you out of the Netherlands, the place where quality (?) USB drives are made. You have the choice of brown or black, which makes perfect sense since this thing's made of leather, and nobody wants a purple leather USB drive. We're cheap, not animals. [Van Der Led]

Star Wars Mini-Lightsabre Requires Obligatory "Swooosh" Mouth Effects

According to the manufacturer, this $45 Star Wars USB Lightsabre, which connects to the USB port to charge up its battery and glows in the dark with a blue light, is "a lamp". Sure. Whatever. We see it and the only thing we can imagine is a mini-Jedi mini-duel to mini-death, doing mouth sound effects. And actually, it's not that mini, as the image of people battling with two of these shows: More »
