I just threw away more Saturday, for you, dear reader, testing out Mobile Youtube which seems to have mysteriously soft launched. I used two 3G phones, the Helio Ocean and the Treo 755, both on Sprint's EVDO network. Here's what I found:
•No way to upload videos via the page, but you can still upload via SMS, as always.
•Not all videos on the main page are online, and there's no discernible pattern to what you'll find.
•The files come in .3gp streamed format. You can't download them to save.
•The interface is HTML, and fairly rich, with links to other videos and detailed info on each. No way to vote for videos, though.
•Video res is downscaled compared to the main site, but impressive.
•Buffering takes about 10 seconds or so. These files aren't small, and downloading them and playing them is likely to destroy your battery life. Such is the price for chuckles on the go.
•Sorry iPhone, these videos are too beefy for EDGE. You'll have to use WiFi if you want to keep from going insane.
Test this on your phones. Tell me what you find.

it no worky on my blackjack. on internet explorer, i get an "unknown error OX80004005" when i hit "watch video".
lame.
Using T-Mobile EDGE on my N73. Seems to work fine.
yeah, doesn't seem to choke too much on EDGE for me either.
Wow, it works on my Treo 700p! It launches Kinoma player. My life is now complete.
I take back my enthusiasm after trying to find my own YouTube videos...
"Only a portion of YouTube videos are available on mobile at this time."
Oh well, better than nothing.
Glad to see your Helio Ocean still working! My web browser stopped loading after 2 weeks, so I returned it for a refund. It was a sweet phone when it worked.. But when you click "Surf", you expect your browser - Not a blank white screen.
Can't wait for my 700wx to get here now :D
well damn. got my hopes up & everything. loaded it up on the Dash, clicked through the warning (of course I have unlimited data! not having that would suck!), browsed through three pages before finding something that looked, oh i dunno, marginally interesting, which mobile IE felt should be launched in winders media, which declined to recognize the file type. isn't that type of file the normal mobile phone video file type? that theoretically would play in the camera app? if WM6 could be configured in some way to do that? meh. oh well.
was a nice thought though.
Wow, this works great on EDGE, really not much difference then on my 3G N75 vs my BB Curve. Can't wait to try this out on the iPhone.
I get an error when I try to play a video on my WM5 PN-820. I don't have a data plan, so I have a block put on data. I tried to access it via USB, and I got a warning before it opened Windows Media Player, then I got an unknown error.
Hey Brian, it's working pretty well on my Nokia N75 via Cingular UMTS here at the beach in L.A. Pretty clear picture, not full screen though & the audi is a little weak.
No go on my Sprint 6700. I've got a full data plan, everything else works, Orb, too. I try to watch a video and it errors out immediately in WMP.
I've tested this on my Nokia 3230. Site didn't work with default browser, as with Opera mobile browser it works. Video opens in RealPlayer, but on my EDGE connection it didn't play smoothly (sound did, video didn't).
someone posted in digg -- no go on windows mobile devices. Bummer, but no surprise for the lame ass operating system.
Like a few other readers, I, too, get an unknown error when youtube loads up WM player. Any idea why this is the case??
works great on my Helio Heat
Works fine on my TyTn, playing in HTC's "Streaming Media" app.
Thanks Brian. I just tried the link on my Nokia E61 (Symbian S60 3ed) over Wi-Fi and it worked great.. no buffer whatsoever.
Works great on my Nokia N80. I'm using my wifi access and it goes on without a stutter....still disappointing that their are only a limited number of videos.
Clicking on a video from the 700p sent me to the Kinoma web page and clicking on a video from the 700w launched WMP and an error. I suppose I need some sort of third-party video playback app on these phones to assist. But I really don't care enough to find one.
No go on my Treo 680 on Cingular/AT&T. I think it's EDGE, definitely not 3G. I get to the mobile Youtube site, can search for videos (you're right, not even close to the whole site content, and no real pattern to what's there), and select a video to play. Then, the embedded Kimona player takes over and starts to buffer. Never gets past 0%, though, and eventually bombs out. Oh well, that's what I get for not being 3G I guess.
Had this for ages in the UK on all Vodafone, phones, used it a few times on my Nokia 6280 works fine, but not enough 3G in the Uk to watch a full vid on the train to college, best of all tho its free for me as its part of Vodafones webpage whihc is free to browse!!! GO UK!!!
Works great on the Treo 700p (one smartphone to rule them all?)
works great on my helio ocean!
too bad there's like, nothing i'm too interested in on the mobile youtube. i hope in the future all uploaded videos get put on the mobile youtube!
i'm getting so sick of the "mobile" versions of everything being all freaking cut down and minimized to have the LEAST content available and worthless segments of things (IE: Helio TV Set).
We have 3G and all the technology to take advantage of it, why do they keep limiting us! ugh!!!!
Blackberry Pearl with Blackberry browser on T-Mobile:
Protocol Unsupported by your browser...
Alas, no Paris Hilton in Jail for me.
anyone have any luck with windows mobile?
doesn't f-ing work on my ancient MotoQ
Worked great with my N80 over the wifi. A 3min video took about 4 seconds before playing. I was impressed.
Nice...
Works on my At&t Samsung Sync. And plays fullscreen, too, unlike the Cingular Video (Now Cellular Video) service...
Thanks!
Why YouTube? I don't get why somebody would want to watch the completely random videos from that site on their mobile device with a dedicated service. Going there randomly from a browser is alright, but what redeeming quality does YouTube have, other than stupid clips of people hurting themselves? I want to know. (video diaries/blogs do not count, they are lame)
Photophile: Of course there's a reason: All the Gizmodo video features, duh! ;) That aside, I tend to agree: there's not much worth looking at on YouTube, and I tend to spend no time there (except when looking for Will It Blend videos). I actually tend to spend more time on Google Video, because you can actually find full length public domain videos there. I'm personally waiting until Google Video and YouTube finally merge (or at least until Google Video results come up in YouTube, like YouTube results come up in Google Video)
no joy with a w810i on AT&T's EDGE.
then again, the network with the "fewest dropped calls" has been crash-happy all day in my hometown. oh, well.
cuz you want to show your friend the video of some kid cracking his head open on the pavement while skateboarding, or the 15yo dancing on her webcam, DUH
BTW, just for the hell of this I tried loading this on my Mac in FireFox, and I was surprised that I wasn't redirected to the full YouTube web page (most mobile pages I've seen bump full computer browsers to the full page). Interestingly enough, it decided to load RealPlayer instead of QuickTime or VLC. QuickTime didn't seem to like the video and sat forever at the streaming screen, but VLC did the deed with no problem at all. Interesting? Maybe not. Informational? You bet!
guys, list your carriers, too. I am feeling like that may have something to do with things working/not working.
no go on my sprint Q i get this error message.
"An unknown error 0X800004005 has occurred"
which is the same error the first poster has on his blackjack.
Nino
Another reason for wireless carriers not to take on wifi phones: Teenage children spending there parents money on cell phone video data transfers. GOOD JOB YOUTUBE!
Works great on my Ocean. Yes, big surprise.
There's very little in the way of content at the moment.
No go on the Alltel EVDO network with my Q. Get the same error as the first poster.
works on the nokia 9300 w/edge
wow! im playing a video right now on my new RAZR V3xx with unlimited Media plan added to it...Awesome *_*!!! Im gonna be on this all day!...
Good read!
Pink bunnies Brian? You hip hip bastard.
(probably the default)
I wish I had the hardware or the network or the money for the plan. :(
Still great to read about this stuff though.
Been using it on a Samsunng A707 and an LG CU400. Both running on Cingulars 3G network. Absolutely no hiccups whatsoever with only 1 bar of signal. Also, a great alternative site is blueapple.mobi
Can't wait till this comes out for the sidekick 3
^_^
No-go for me. My T-Mobile MDA says it's an unsupported format. :-(
finally we can watch youtube videos while relaxing in bed.

Works wonderfully on my Samsung A900 (blade) from sprint...
i have 3g and an unlimited data plan... so no doubt ill be listening to the mcdonalds rap quite a lot now
I'm going to play these over EDGE on my iPhone just to prove a point. And when I get out of the hospital, I'm going to say... "Ha! But I recovered!"
No go on the blackjack either for me. same error,
"An unknown error 0X800004005 has occurred" and I have full data access, but I wasn't in a 3g area, maybe that had something to do with it.
Any other player I should try?
Windows Mobile SUCKS again.
Yes Brian, it does...
Except Windows Mobile 6, but when is that going to show up on Verizon? I want to ditch the Q so badly!
I tried this out on my AT&T Motorola V3xx (HSDPA). Buffering literally took just around a second. Quality was excellent. Also tried it when in an EDGE-only area of my house, and it was passable, but the buffering took FOREVER.
I wouldn't mess with this without 3G, personally... but with 3G - it rocks.
Works fine on my Siemens S35.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPhq0EPMmNQ Without any fanfare, Google quietly launched YouTube Mobile. The web page is slimmed down for your portable, and video selections are streamed 3GP. Interesting to see YouTube move beyond Flash as their sole video format. (H.264 coming to AppleTV.)
