Sony Ericsson W580i Available From AT&T

The w580 isn't exactly new—we fondled it earlier this year—but it's now officially available on AT&T. The price actually depends on your region, and will be available for $79 to $129 with a two-year contract. To refresh, it's a Walkman phone that supports FM radio, TrackID and MusicID music recognition programs, Quad-band, 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth A2DP, Memory STick Micro, 2.0-inch screen and a pedometer, which we catalogued here. It simply doesn't do it for me in the Specs department so I wouldn't buy it. But as an iPhile, and self-admitted design snob, this is, for me, the only competition to the iStuff design-wise.

Something about this phone just look cool. The silver and orange, the little "W" branding, the fonts, the beveling, the layout. It's something I'd actually be happy I was carrying (unlike the significantly more useful N95, blackberries, a real camera, Zunes, etc.)

  • Just went to website.
New user buying online gets $129 off with 2 year contract = free.

This phone is damn sexy (the black one). I might buy one and unlock it so I can use on T-Mobile.

It attracts a bit of attention at my store, but no buyers.

  • Careful with this phone and the cracked keypads (google it) the design in the keys make it crack.
I suggest you google a lot and find out if you want to be paying Sony Ericsson for return shipping every-time it cracks.
I have the S500i and love it but like the W580 suffers from the same dumb key design. I'm on my 3rd keypad now with very little use.

@strider_mt2k: Exactly. I like looking at it - not so interested in touching it.

  • Edge, no thanks. Edge is for people that believe NetZero when they say "All providers take you to the same internet, so why pay more?"

  • @elmyc: The key-cracking was an issue with certain colors of the S500, this phone doesn't suffer from them, AFAIK.

The w580 is an excellent phone, especially for the money. WTB one unlocked so i can use on Tmo. (actuaccly, WTB the w960 or k850 ^^)

  • @ComposMentis: Haha yeah -- cant stand it when I tether my phone in Edge.

And with all the problems that have occurred with me and Sony Ericsson phones in the pass, I'm definitely gonna pass on this one.

  • @nachobel:

No, there have been cases of W580 cracked keys too, believe me I have researched this forever. Also it is not the chemical reaction of certain colors is the actual key layout causing the cracks.

  • @nachobel:

I have an Urban Grey W580i and four of my keys cracked after three days of use. I called the SE store where I got my phone about the problem and they said that they're going to replace the keypads (keypads only--not the whole unit) as soon as they receive a new shipment on parts. Haven't received a call until now (bought my phone two weeks ago--called them as soon as I discovered cracks on my keys).

Anyway, here are pics of the cracked keys as proof:

I love the phone though, I just wish they used a different material for their keys.

  • I have this phone. Bought it from AT&T about 2 weeks ago. It is FANTASTIC!
THe battery life is amazing, frankly. It is like an iPhone for people wanting to pay less and have 3G. The Internet connection is SCREAMING fast. For the first time ever, the "don't use while driving" message that Google Maps Mobile has is applicable to me.
Most of the broken keys relates to the W500i and not the 580. I got a 4GB µMS installed. I have days of my music on there. There is also an FM radio, which has excellent fidelity for the earphone antenna design.
Also, the MP3 or radio will fade out for when a call or text comes in. Very smooth. Very sexy.

I'm a big Ericsson fan. I love the battery life, interface and form factor of the things. It's really a pleasure to have. Since Ericssons link up to my address book, I don't think I'd need to use the keys very often :D

  • Not exactly new *NEW*, I've had it for almost a month now, and it had been on the at&t site for a while before that

  • Yay! My phone! It's cool enough for Giz, right?

  • I actually just got the phone about a week ago: $100 with a $150 rebate! And it came with headphones and data cable, so not a bad offer.

  • Got mine about a week ago. It's a nice phone. Battery life is excellent.

Couple problems though: battery cover is very hard to remove, and opening the M2 memory card cover is next to impossible. Got it open with a flathead.

  • I have had mine since the middle of October, ans it worked great until January. The 4 key broke, I called SE, i sent it back and i had it back in about 1 and a half weeks. Then i got it back, and i debranded it in Feb. and it was even better!!! (By the way, if you jailbreak it, you will find that there is much more to the phone, at&t just locks it all off) At the end of March, the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 keys broke just like it did before. Also, the two soft keys were tilted off to the side. Isent the phone off the other day, and I am waiting to get it back now. I am hoping that if it happens again, they will offer me a comparable replacement phone.
