A British teenager who bought a Sony PlayStation 2 on eBay for 95 ($194) got more than he bargained for when he opened the package. Instead of a shiny, happy gaming console, there was a whole heap of euros - 65,400 ($90,000) to be precise—stacked neatly inside. A spokesman for eBay said that the parcel's contents were "somewhat unusual," but that they would help the police in any way they could.
When the parcel arrived, on March 20, the boy's parents contacted the Norfolk Constabulary, who are now holding the money under the Proceeds of Crime Act. If the owner does not come forward by September 22, then the family can apply to have the cash returned to them—unless the police apply to hold onto the money for a longer period. [BBC]

That would suck. You know you'd want to get the cash, but then you'd always have to live with the fear that someone will show up looking for their 90 grand.
Relocation is cheaper than fear. I would have moved.
Now he can get a PS3!! Yeah, it would be a shame though if Bullet-Tooth Tony showed up with a Desert Eagle.
Take the 90k and move yo ass outta town!!!
why they have to open their big mouth??
could have kept the cash, gotten a PSTRIPLE, and be merry...
@Tony of TonyandJuan.com: Indeed. But other than that damn that's one lucky bastard.
I wouldn't get a PS3....
Anyways I would have loved just to get 2,000 dollars.
i would have kept the cash...and get 360....
May I speak for the majority when I say Holy Fuck ?
As far as I see it he payed for it... :) but $194 for a ps2? he deserves it.
@Cursemaster0:
It was a PS2.
@ShockTerminal:
I was saying that at getting a PS3 afterwards.
Someone is gonna catch a bullet for this misstake :(
Whoever was supposed to get that 90K must've been super pissed when they received a PS2.
I think I would report the package as missing and undelivered.
Obviously these criminals were incompetent. Everyone knows the best place to hide $90k is in your freezer.
Great eBayer, will buy from again! A+++++++++++++!!!!
I hope he remembered to leave positive feedback.
For those who don't understand. Within 30 hours of recieving the package. SOMEONE WOULD DEFINATELY SHOW UP looking for their misplaced 90k. I don't even know if I'd claim the cash after 180 days, because they'd still come looking for it.
However, I would shave 10k-20k off the top before calling the cops. But, that's just me.
If I was an unscrupulous individual, I'd just take the cash and leave the country, never to be heard from again..
Of course that's only "if".. I would never REALLY do something like that.. ..I think..
I hate f'n Pikeys...
Kids today. Don't know when they've got a good thing. You are supposed to tell the police you found half that amount!
@Luke: LOL!
shit i would keep my mouth shut, or at least do what DustyButt said.
Who says he hasn't already skimmed a few grand off, I wouldn't blame them. They've already shown more intelligence, integrity and honesty than your average bear by handing the cash in to the police.
Luke,
That made my day.. A+++++++++++
$90k is a lot of money but it is certainly not enough to be on the run and give up your family and friends.
You know someone is going to pay for that mistake with their life because there is no legitimate circumstance that I know of that would require that much cash to be mailed.
I don't get what the mailer was trying to achieve. Was he a confused WOW player thinking he was transfering his gold to his horde toon through the neutral AH?
@Cursemaster0:
I don't like 360, but if I had 90k dropped in my lap I'd buy one. Maybe 2.
@moosetoga:
And we all know how well that worked out.
Shoo. I'da just took the money, moved, and used the rest for life. Why would you turn it in?
reminds me of the old man's backstory from "mind game"
Everyone is dissing this kid for not shaving money off the top.
HOW DO YOU KNOW HE DIDN'T?
It's not like he's gonna tell everyone about it.
I with sheepcloner
maybe 90K was only half anyway
Sounds very sleep with the fishy to me.
Hope they didn't publish his name.
90 is an odd number, I'm thinking it was a nice even 100k, who knows what happened to the rest?!(winkwink)
What if this was someone's strange idea of a random gift to make someone's day? I mean, I know it sounds crazy, but I heard of a guy leaving a $10,000 tip at a restaurant once. Granted, this is highly unlikely, but I'm surprised no one considered this possibility so far... maybe that has to do with the unlikeliness...
If this money does belong to a criminal of some sort, and not some old granny that got a little confused (or generous), then keeping half could very well be the same sentence for danger or death as keeping the whole amount.
$100k is worth buying a plane ticket from pretty much anywhere in the world to come and collect that package. Don't forget that the original seller has this person's name and address. A typical family wouldn't be able to move and hide their new location.
On top of all this, if these are funds from illegal activity, they probably don't belong to the original ps2 seller, but someone up a bit higher who likely has greater interest in not seeing their property given away like this.
The right thing to do would be to give the whole thing to the cops along with all the information one has on the seller. Even sending it back to the seller would be a bad thing to do - the package could be lost or the seller could also tell the money's owner the kid still had it.
Making this story public was also a good move for safety's sake.
"the boy's parents contacted the Norfolk Constabulary"
If that happened to me my reaction would have been
"MOM! DAD! WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING???!!!"
But I don't need to worry. If this ever happens to me my parents would take about five seconds to decide to report the package as "missing".
omg i mite use ebay more often..........
and @ Luke, that was the best comment i have read for a long while!!!!
Sweet.
Almost enough to buy a PS3. :)
@Luke:
LOL!! thats why i like to waste my time in gizmodo instead of working..
eerrr.. i mean, read gizmodo before working..
Good morning everyone!
Great Seller! Fast Shipping! Product was BETTER than described! A+++
Oh great, someone beat me to it. :(
This sounds like a case of someone's parent/spouse cleaning out the [insert room] and not opening the box. The real owner is probably in jail, hoping to come home to 90k in his PS2 box.
Take the 90k and move yo ass outta town!!!
90k is not enough to make me go through the hassle of selling my home and buying another one.
/I'd just buy more guns and a stronger door
Should have sent a negative feedback to seller.
"Never Buy from again Product never arrived, f---"
after that well the rest is up to imagination, a galon of vaseline, box of firecrackers, some pb&j and a constricting vibration ring.
Wow.
I'd think that this would work both ways. If the seller knows who the buyer is, certainly the cops know who mailed $90K to this kid.
If you are involved in some sort of "enterprise" where you send 90 grand through the mail, somehow I think that the loss of said 90 grand would be the least of your worries given these facts.
@Luke: comment of the week!
That's just plain funny. But why the hell tell anyone? They could have just held on to it for a rainy day, and if someone comes looking, just give it up. Damn...so what if it costs a finger? You can just buy a new one, and a model that functions as a Bene Gesserit Gum Jabar! Woot!
@Ravana: Because in our no witneses society, losing a finger may not be the only thing lost. If no one knows you have the 90k, then no ones knows why you were killed, if it came to that.
Besides... isn't receiving an amount of money like this, in the mail, like keeping the money you see fall off an armored truck? Illegal?
who keeps 90 grand?? i think they already took 10
Keep in mind that the sum wasn't $90,000 US, it was 65,400 Euro. Keep that in mind when you're making those "how much money did they keep" calculations. :P
...And when all's said and done, that kid goes from having $194 to having $90k to having no money, no PS2, a bounty on his head, and douchebag parents (they did what they had to to keep lil Johnny from sleeping with the fishes, but still). How wonderfully ironic.
And who misplaces 90K? Who was the seller in this transaction? D_Trump69? Sir_R_Brandson123? B_Gates_Loves_MS? Dumb_Dope_Dealer? I'm searching Ebay for any items listed for sale by $$$Launderer
