    It's True, Anything Is Possible

On the list of things I believed I would never, ever read, Walt Mossberg, of the Walt Street Journal, saying this about Windows doesn't fall very far behind a long op-ed by Glenn Beck describing Obama's healthcare reform as "brilliant." More »

Three Years Later, Newspapers Start With The "Wii" Jokes

I'll give the WSJ a pass on running their Motion Plus review a week behind, because it's a pretty good one. But a faux-unintentional "Wii" pun, in 2009? Get with the program! (Disclaimer: I giggled, like a child.) [WSJ]

Walt Mossberg Pans Buggy MobileMe in Review

Mossberg has rolled out an in-depth review of MobileMe backed by a week of testing in today's WSJ, and if you've been following our coverage it won't come as too big of a surprise that he's not a fan. But his problems with the service go well beyond the launch hiccups you've read about. So what's got Mossberg so riled up that he's thrown down his big badhammer on MobileMe? More »

Walt Mossberg Reviews GoGo In-Flight Wi-Fi (Verdict: Fast, But Not Fast Enough)

Walt just tested GoGo, the in-flight Wi-Fi service, on a bunch of laptops and smartphones during a flight from San Francisco to Denver. The service distributes, via Wi-Fi, a high speed cellphone data signal pointed at airplanes, which Mossy rated at around 600kbps down and 250kbps up. This was quick enough for Walt to browse the web, send emails with iPhone rumor attachments, and talk on IM to his ladies, but it couldn't keep up with streaming video on Xtube Hulu. Also, VoIP is blocked, and cell calls aren't possible either. Still, Mossy thought it did well enough for someone who can't stay off the grid for a few hours. GoGo costs $10 for flights under three hours, and $13 for longer ones. It'll begin rolling out in the next few weeks on American Airlines, with Virgin soon to follow. [AllThingsD]

WaltMossbergSays is the Best Tech Pundit Site EVER

It's no secret Walt Mossberg is a freakin' super-pundit in the tech world (it's rumored he once liveblogged for 14 hours straight...while standing). And if you need some words from the man himself, all you have to do is head over to waltmossbergsays.com, jot down your statement/prediction/infallibility, and BOOM! — Walt speaks. Not only that, but people never question what Mossberg says, because he basically knows everything. I mean, did you see the D6 Conference? [WaltMossbergSays] (Thanks, Grant)

Mossberg Takes Back 3G iPhone in 60 Days Quote

The Walt Mossberg clip that made the rounds this weekend, proclaiming the 3G iPhone a mere 53 days away? He just backpedaled on it, swearing he has no better idea than we do. And if he did, he'd give himself scoop: "If I knew when this date was, why would I announce it in the middle of a sentence at the Finnish embassy, rather than report it in the Wall Street Journal?" Guess that chat with Steve straightened everything out, though is it really something he can take back? [Silicon Alley Insider]

Walt Says 3G iPhone Coming in 60 Days

Walt Mossberg has confirmed what AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega already hinted at CTIA: the iPhone will be 3G-capable "in 60 days." Mossberg said it 6:53 into this Beet.tv feature. Knowing that it's going to be one year after release, what De la Vega said, and the fact that Walt gets his mitts on the goods way before anyone else, it's only logical to think he is right. We will discover it around June 4. More »

Officially Official: Windows Vista SP1 Is Available... NOW

Microsoft says SP1 will bring "improvements that address many key pieces of customer feedback, especially in the areas of performance and reliability." Where Is David Pogue's MacBook Air Review?

Wednesday night around this time, we like to check in with our favorite columnists. Tonight we expected MacBook Air reviews from Walt Mossberg at WSJ, Ed Baig at USA Today, Steven Levy at Newsweek and of course, David Pogue at the venerable New York Times. Only, when I refreshed my browser at 9pm, Pogue's Jan. 24 State of the Art column turned out to cover Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac and MacSpeech Dictate, rather than the far sexier (and more controversial) MacBook Air. UPDATE: Pogue scoops the other A-Team members by reviewing the Macbook Air on the Macworld show floor. His response in the comments. [First MacBook Air Reviews]

Miracles: Mossberg Says Dell XPS One Is Better Machine than an iMac

Today, December 27 at 1:01AM EDT, The Supreme Pope of Tech Walter Mossberg has declared the Dell XPS One a better machine than the iMac. And yes, that sound you thought you dreamt was Steve Jobs screaming and Hell freezing over. The Dell XPS One comes "sightly ahead" of the iMac because of its design and hardware features, like the audio video controls or the built-in memory card readers: More »

Mossberg Keeps On Dreaming of a Phone Revolution

Mossy's column today is a remix of his Wireless Telcos as Soviet ministries joke, told first in a June 2005 column. He complains about phone companies locking handsets to carriers, and making them lame little pocket convenience stores for ringtones, and so on (my words). The timepeg is Apple's new promise of a software development kit for the iPhone, perhaps the device that could best benefit from such an open arrangement. Yes, I am glad he's continuing the salvo against the phone companies. But there is a but. More »

    VMWare Fusion Review by Mossberg

Walt Mossberg appears to be scooping again. This time, it's a review of VMWare's Fusion (Available this Monday, August 6th). The software, like Parallels, allows PC programs to run from within OS X. Mossberg compares them, simply:
Parallels has more features than Fusion...But I found Fusion puts less strain on the computer overall.
Jacqui at Ars notes that Parallels isn't taking this competitor lying down. They just released a new beta that supports Mac Expose window swooshing of Windows programs. [VMWare via AllThingsD]

    iPhone Adobe Flash Support Coming

Critics have bashed Apple for omitting Adobe Flash support from the iPhone's "real life" Safari browser, and with good reason: a quick spin around the Web on an iPhone reveals sites that don't work, or don't work well without the plug-in. Now, it's rumored to be coming, via a quote from Mossberg himself. The question is, was the original exclusion of Flash a technical decision or a business decision? More »

Opinions Side-By-Side In Our iPhone Review Matrix

If you were too lazy to actually read the four iPhone reviews that came out last night, we've done the hard part and stuck the most salient tidbits into a chart, hoping to see both agreement and dissent among the elders: David Pogue of the New York Times, Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, Ed Baig of USA Today and Steven Levy of Newsweek. (What happened to Lev Grossman at Time Magazine? He usually gets the Apple stuff early too.) Jump for our painstakingly created review matrix—it's fun to notice what words they all use, and when one totally disagrees with the rest. More »

Steve Jobs Kinda Answers Some iPhone Questions

Mossberg gets Steve Jobs to talk iPhone. Except when he asks about version 2.0. Those questions are forbidden. The rest of the questions are important ones. Like will we see this on other carriers? Why no 3G? Will you include GPS? Will there be lower cost versions? Aaaaand, Jobs dodged those, too. An old lesson, learned again: Mossberg may have the power to command a Steve jobs interview, but he can't make him answer questions. [All Things D]

    Mossberg's iPhone Video Review

Mossberg's lost the funky music in the intro, and compared to Pogue's video, he's all business. The interesting bits left out of the text review are here, like, in regards to the keyboard, "I wanted to throw it out the window after 3 days". (Of course, he came around eventually, comparing it in speed to a Treo's keyboard.) More »

Breaking: Mossberg Reviews the iPhone, Says Keyboard A-OK After Five Days

Mossberg and Boehret review the iPhone, 3 minutes after Pogue at the NYTimes. In a nutshell:
Our verdict is that, despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer. Its software, especially, sets a new bar for the smart-phone industry, and its clever finger-touch interface, which dispenses with a stylus and most buttons, works well, though it sometimes adds steps to common functions.
And more importantly, unlike Pogue, he likes the keyboard: More »

Steve and Bill...in Pirates of Silicon Valley

Bill and Steve go on stage in about 30 minutes or so. And before they start pulling each other's hair, and before Walt starts dancing around these two with tough questions, I'd like to take this moment to remind you of Pirates of Silicon Valley, the made-for-TV, unauthorized 1999 "docudrama" of how Steve got rich and cool, and Bill got so rich he doesn't even care how cool he is.
