This watch from SDWorks might not have the best-looking LED display, but that's okay! Its default face is the prettiest of all: yours. Unabashed narcissists can order here.
Pac-Man Watch Woka-Woka-Wokas Every Second of Your Life

I like the Pac-Man watch as much as the Pac-Man Theme Song: "Paaaac-Man, run from the ghost! Paaaac-Man, he eats dots on toast! Paaaaaaaaac-Man, he'd rather have lamb roast!" That's the Pac-Man Theme song. In my head it is, ok?

There are only 500 of these at $129 each. Some include a free copy of Pac-Man for PC. Go get it now, because these are going to be worth millions of dollars in a few years. Or maybe just $5 dollars. It can go either way, but it doesn't matter. The important thing is seeing that little yellow thing going round and around, eating your life one second at a time.
Void VO2 Watch: An iMac With a Speed Dial

If you think about it—really think about it—or even half-assedly think about it—this Void VO2 Retrograde watch isn't so different from an iMac.

But whereas an iMac* focuses on its glass screen accented by a tiny strip of aluminum, this Void centerpieces its brushed stainless steel—the informationless void of the watch, if you will—as much just as much as its glass-covered speed dial watch face.

Void's design admits that it's only half for utility, saving the other half completely for style.

The Void VO2 watch is available now for $200. But if you prefer a digital face to an analog one, check out the Void V01.

Only 8 of these limited edition pieces will be produced, so if you have an obsession with watches (and presumably, alot of disposable income), you might want to start plotting ways to get your hands around this watch—or rather, this watch around your wrist.
Behold, the BlackBerry* Watch: $150, Coming in February

Turns out those leaks about a BlackBerry Bluetooth companion watch were dead on: The Allerta InPulse Bluetooth companion watch—not a watchphone—isn't actually a RIM product, and should ship in February for $150. So what does it do?

Think of it as an extender for your BlackBerry, or a wrist-mounted dashboard. It won't place calls or compose texts; it's really just there to give you a heads-up and preview whenever your BlackBerry mothership gets a call, receives a message, or has some other, being-a-BlackBerry-related news to share with you. Also, yes, it's a watch, for telling time. It may not do a whole lot, but the hardware sounds nice:

* 1.3" full colour organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) display
* Bluetooth® v2.0+EDR
* 150 mAh lithium-ion polymer battery
* Glass lens and full metal body
* 22mm interchangeable wrist band
* Vibrating motor
* Micro-USB port (for charging)
* Over-the-air firmware updates
* Dimensions: 51mm height x 38mm width x 12mm depth

Allerta, which totally sounds like a prescription mood drug, says the watch'll last for four days on a single charge, which is respectable considering that it doesn't look too hideously large. The InPulse will communicate with any BlackBerry running OS 4.3 or above by means of a free companion app. The watch, though, isn't quite as cheap: It'll ship for $150 in February, though it's available for preorder now.

One thing though: This is a nice render and all and the product doesn't smell like vapor, but why can't we see a picture of this thing?

UPDATE: About that! Eric from Allerta shot me an email:

Ah, it's your right to talk vapour because we don't have tech demos ready yet...I'm actually quite sorry about that. We're a new CE startup, so it's tough going from the get go. We actually have near-complete prototypes, but they're made out of brass right now (easier to CNC mill). We're currently in the month-long process of making molds for casting stainless steel. We didn't want to publish too many pictures of the brass watches, in case it confused people.

Which is fair enough. They've posted a few of the early prototype pictures here, in case you're curious. This is what they look like now—just keep in mind, these aren't meant to look nice, yet:

From the Eck-man himself:

These are some teasers of my new watch collection. The range is inspired by Star Wars. A mixture of metals, rubbers and nylons. My amazing partners at Timex- completely rocked these. Yes...they feature "indiglo"...sounds...and other technologies. From Boba to R2...Stormtroopers to Vader...

There's no pricing information at the moment, but the Timex/Ecko mashups will be around this holiday season. You know, so you can buy them and stuff.

This, Folks, Is the BlackBerry Smartwatch

Early rumors of a BlackBerry-branded watchphone/smartwatch/wrist messenger/Bluetooth bracelet seemed a little far-fetched—RIM is all about business, and watchphones are pure, distilled gadget novelty. Nonetheless, here we stand, gazing upon the the BlackBerry companion watch. Here's what we know.

According to CrackBerry:

• It was designed "specifically for BlackBerry from the ground up," by a "new BlackBerry-dedicated accessory company," and could be branded as the "inPulse." This sounds suspiciously like BlackBerry wanting a watchphone, and outsourcing the design and manufacturing expertise.

• It's got a large (but hopefully not too large) OLED screen, with a high enough resolution to display text clearly

• Its primary purpose is to display messages from a paired BlackBerry, meaning it's strictly an accessory device like Sony Ericsson's pieces, not a standalone watchphone like the LG GD910.

This is an early glimpse in all senses—Crackberry describes the shots rather wonderfully as "actual renderings of the real deal"—meaning that there's no info on tech specs, nor indication as to how much this thing might cost, whether it'll carry BlackBerry branding, or when we could expect it to actually ship. The announcement, though, is expected "soon," whatever that means. [Crackberry]

Starting from scratch, he designed a PCB complete with 133 (hand soldered) LEDs, room for a temperature controlled oscillator for real time clock capabilities, a LiPo battery, and a cell phone vibrator to provide a simulated "second hand tick" feeling. The whole watch is powered by a PIC 16F946.

According to the creator:

Ora concept is a study on the field of haute horlogerie. It focuses on the display of time via an unconventional mode, by replacing the expected dial arrangement found in the vast majority of the mechanical watches with a set of three interwoven tapes—one to indicate the hour(s), one to indicate the minute(s), and one to indicate the day.

The arrangement of the indications derived from the aspiration to demonstrate in a bold and dramatic way the passage of time. The design of the case reflects an "inside-out" design approach as it was the mechanism's arrangement that prescribed the overall form in an attempt to enhance its uniqueness and create a distinctive silhouette.

Apparently, the wristwatch holds the Guinness record for durability at extreme depths. As you can see from this video, the watch can also handle some other everyday scenarios—like being shot, drenched with a fire hose and blown up with dynamite. Seriously, this titanium beast looks like its sealed up tighter than a submarine—and that kind of durability doesn't come cheap. Owning one will set you back over $4,400. If you are, well...you, the On Foot watch would be a constant reminder of your physical inferiority.

You see, the face of the watch features the world record times for running at various distances:

The outer arc shows records of less than 60 seconds: 100m, 200m and 400m. The two inner arcs align with the minute and hour hand respectively, for records of under and over one hour, showing distances from 800 metres all the way up to 100km.

Designed for Mr Jones Watches, the On Foot is intended to serve as an inspiration to the wearer—to "make and break records." Unfortunately, we are probably more about records of the "most bacon eaten in an hour" or "WOW endurance" variety.
Qlocktwo Really Spells the Time Out for You

At first glance, we thought the Qlocktwo was some intentionally confusing, Tokyoflash-like time puzzle. Then we learned that those symbols are called letters. And letters, following long-standing social constructs, form words.

So no matter what the time of day, Qlocktwo can spell it out for you by illuminating just the right spots.

But while the design is pleasing, Qlocktwo's price is not. You see, it's a designer product, meaning that you'll need to pay somewhere around $1500 to own on of your own, along with a few hundred bucks should you want to change out the faceplate.

Then again, if Qlocktwo can replace all the other reading you do in your life, it could save you a boatload on print materials. Our reserves from Danielle Steele alone will be staggering.
Samsung "World's Thinnest" Watchphone Also Happens to Be One of the World's Only Watchphones

Samsung's only real watchphone competitor hasn't even launched its product yet, so it's a little early for the marketing oneupmanship. Regardless, the S9110 is an impressive piece of kit, with a 1.76-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, email support and MP3 playback.

Rounding out the feature list are a few watchphone necessities, like voice recognition and speakerphone, all in a package that measures in at about 12mm thick—bulkier than your average Swatch, but well within acceptable wristwear territory. The first wave of releases will be scattered throughout Europe, starting in France, where the S9110 will retail for around $650.

The most striking thing about this—as well as the LG GD910—is that unlike pretty much every watchphone we've seen before, these might be usable on a day to day basis, granted you're willing to accept the inherent awkwardness of the watchphone form factor. No word on a stateside release yet, but import costs aren't likely to stop the kinds of dapper jetsetting gentlemen and/or independently wealthy James Bond superfans who'll be buying this thing anyway.
Louis Vutton Watch Has 'Mysterieuse' Floating Hands

When does a watch cost as much as a house? When it's the gravity defying $250,000 Louis Vuitton Tambour Mysterieuse Calibre LV115 apparently.

The focus of the design lies in its transparent face with a mechanism that appears to float in the center. However, the secret to this magical feature is actually quite simple—the hour and minute hands are supported by two transparent sapphire disks. The watch is also capable of running for up to eight days on a single winding.

Yeah, $250,000 is a lot to spend on a watch, but there are some perks to the purchase—each watch can be customized in whatever way the customer sees fit and it comes with a mini steamer trunk to keep it safe. Meh, I would still rather have the house.

Urwerk, the same company that brought us the ridiculously cool UR-202 are back with a new watch appropriately titled "King Cobra."

Inspired the obscure Patek Philippe Cobra prototype watch from 1958, the King Cobra accounts for time like a high performance sportscar barrels through a speedometer.

On the UR-CC1, there are two horizontal indications displayed by two cylinders: one for the (jumping) hours and a retrograde cylinder for the minutes. The seconds are displayed by a rotating disk on the dial.
The UR-CC1 is the result of more than three years of research, development, production and testing to ensure that the rotation and instant fly-back of the large hour and minute cylinders was achieved without compromising accurate timekeeping.

Like most watches of this caliber, expect quantities to be low and prices to be outrageous. Either way we like it, because it's tiny and sleek.

In fact, at a 1.3-inch diameter and weighing only 1.2 ounces, the Pierre Junod Eris Planetary Sphere Watch is so small that you can use it as a pendant. A partial feature list: it's got an automatic triathlon mode, so you can switch from one sport to another with a single button press; synchronization with ANT cycling power meters; support for heart-rate straps and Garmin running and cycling cadence meters; calorie, speed, distance and elevation metering; vibrating feedback for anything from distance benchmarks to time intervals to heart rate targets; customizable homescreens; charging via USB or AC. Crucially, according to reviewer Matt Honan, this isn't just well-intentioned feature-loading—all these features actually work.

It's still subject to the typical shortfalls of GPS wrist trainers, namely—though to a lesser degree than most similar products—battery life, which maxes out at about 20 hours. In practice that's more than most people will ever need, but after plunking down $350 for what looks like a wristwatch, it'd be nice if you at least had the option to disable all the frill and use it like one.

The most innovative attribute, is its unique single-pusher planetary-gear chronograph with striking system. A single-push piece activates three identically structured planetary gears that control the chrono functions. A patent has been filed for this original interpretation of the chronograph. As if that is not enough, Christophe Claret has chosen to add a striking mechanism signaling when the chronograph is started, stopped and reset.

Even with the video, the intricacy of the design is far too much for my mechanically moronic mind to wrap around—but this is the best look most of us will ever get considering that only 68 pieces will be made.
Apparently, half a watch plus half a watch equals one ugly watch.

The Diesel DZ4160 "Freak of Nature" watch combines a steel-strapped, oval case watch with a leather-strapped, square case watch. The result is a metal/animal skin hybrid that's not quite as stylish as either elite substance is on its own. Then again, Frankenstein's monster was no looker, except maybe when he starred in Raging Bull. Seriously, can't we have watches that just tell us the time anymore?

Indeed, there is no shortage of watches out there that make it as difficult as possible to actually tell the time. (Thanks Tokyoflash!) Although, I suppose that watchmakers need to do something to differentiate themselves from their biggest competition—the cellphone. But the new Phosphor line gets legitimate style points.

Much less conservative than Phosphor's previous line, these watches have a cool kind of bold newsprint look to them, really using the retro-future style of e-ink at its best. They might be clunky on someone with svelte, girlish wrists (stop looking at my wrists), but if you like that oversized trend, these are worth a look. They're all in the sub-$200 range, and available now.
If I wasn't so sure that I would look like a complete tool wearing this, it would be something I would love to pick up. Sadly, I don't feel the need to repeatedly explain to people that: A: it's a watch—not a bracelet.
Garmin 405CX and 310XT Forerunner Watches With GPS Have Everything An Athlete Needs

Garmin has added two new watches to the Forerunner linuep—the hideous but waterproof 310XT and the 405CX (the successor to their formidable 405.)

As mentioned, one of the benefits of the 310XT is its rugged waterproof exterior (rated for a depth of up to 50 meters), but it also features an impressive 20 hours of battery life—that's double the capacity of its predecessor the 305. Both the 310XT and the more stylish 405CX feature GPS, wireless connectivity / data syncing via Garmin's ANT+ technology and improved accuracy with regard to tracking burned calories.

Garmin makes some of the best sport watches in the biz, so I can only hope that these new offerings will follow in that tradition. Athletes looking for a cool training tool can expect to drop $369 for the 405XT and $349 for the 310XT when they are released sometime in Q2—but I wouldn't drop the cash if you expect to wear these bad boys with a suit if you know what I mean.
Clairvoyant Watch Warns You When It's a Bad Time

Swiss watchmaker Borgeaud has teamed up with Indian fortune tellers to create a watch that allegedly predicts the future. When things are about to go sour, a bedpan-shaped section on the watch will turn brown.

According to the Borgeaud site, the watch automatically displays a daily 90-minute period called the Raju Kaal, which is believed to be a terrible time to make important decisions or start new projects.

Called "The Pachang," after one of the world's oldest almanacs, the watch will only revert back to its normal color after the Raju Kaal is over and "dark astral forces" have left the area.

Borgeaud is only producing 650 of the watches, with prices set above $2000 each. I predict they'll become a great way to weed out rich idiots. [Ananova]

Concord C1 QuantumGravity Watch Ready To Defy Laws of Physics, Budgets

We first told you about the QuantumGravity tourbillion back in January, but now this physics-defying watch is ready for consumption by 10 very, very rich individuals with messed up priorities.

We already knew that the Concord C1 QuantumGravity could counteract the forces of gravity thanks to 18th century technology that involves the escapement and balance wheel being mounted inside a rotating cage—but it appears that the mechanism also includes a "liquid featuring green phosphorescent nanoparticles" encased inside a vertical tube. Apparently, this fluid is used to indicate the power levels remaining in the 3-day reserve. To be perfectly honest, the press release describing the watch and its mechanisms is is pretty damn convoluted (unless you are a master watchmaker), but it will undoubtedly prove popular when it is unveiled at the Baselworld 2009 show next week.
By Diamantini & Domeniconi, the $230 Striped Cuckoo Clock has ditched the typically rustic bark and straw birdhouse design for a more modern approach to avian living. After all, in the age of dyed plastics, there's no need for birds to live in leaky, drab houses. I mean, seriously, just because you're a traditionalist doesn't mean that the entire mechanical bird world needs to suffer. Ass.
Atomic Clocks to Go Portable

Right now, an atomic clock works by sending atoms through a vacuum, microwaving them and measuring how many waves it takes to maximize atom florescence (that's 9,192,631,770 microwaves or one second).

Needless to say, this testing requires a lot of bulky equipment that's at least a cubic meter in size.

Now, a team of researchers out of Reno have successfully used a new technique that cuts down on gear. Using lasers (of course), scientists can hold atoms to be observed in place without a vacuum. The system still requires a bit of equipment, but it could pave the way for portable atomic clocks to be used in space laboratories, or just very, very complicated watches from Tokyoflash.
