VIDEO: Steve Jobs and Bill Gates [D | All Things Digital.]

Comments
Is it me or is Kara Swisher really annoying? She keeps butting and Mossberg keeps talking over her.
Bill gates sounds like Kermit the frog.
And Yes. Kara is incredibly annoying.
I like both these guys, this whole interview shows you how those PC vs. Mac guys who are always fighting in the comments on gizmodo should be behaving.
"you and i have memories that stretch out farther than the road ahead". that's a paul mccartney line so that means that jobs is mccartney to gates' john lennon. of course it could also be a dig at gates' book, the road ahead.
also when jobs mentions a ship that leaks from the top he sounds like a mobster threatening to kill anyone who leaks anything to the press.
No, you're not alone. She doesn't belong on that stage, both because of the guests and because she doesn't have a clue how to moderate the interview.
Lol, what was with the really long awkward silence after Kara asked them about social netowrking and wikis??
i felt awkward watching the headline video. You can tell Steve and Bill are only on stage because they have to be. Also, who are those hosts? they suck.
What a tense interview!
Linus Torvalds deserves to be their more than Jobs. His contributions have affected the digital world in a far greater, more meaningful, yet much less marketed way. On the other hand, that would have been much less interesting for sure.
Oh, and Mossberg is the worst kind of technologist. I once asked him if he was a shill for Minolta since he liked some of their extremely poor quality cameras so much, he threatened to sue me. =)
Gee, how many times can they all say the word 'Paradigm' ?
Wasn't tense at all, imo.
Uh... wow. Just... like a huge, clueless... wow.
the awkward silence was because they both couldn't think of anything most people think is interesting on the internet.
How oggy was the guy asking jobs what it felt like to wish he was gates?
Welll i always imagined this historic meet with lightsabers... :( Im dissapointed...
Wow I'm not going to be the third to reply to this but I would have if I hadn't watched all the videos. I enjoyed them I like to hear their thoughts I just wish Steve was a little more open.
Bill looked kind of pissed by the end of it. Probably due to the fact Jobs couldn't keep his smarmy-vindictive-comment-levels in check... once again.
Also, just once I'd like to see Jobs change his goddamn clothes. It's not cute anymore.
yeah Steve saying "I can't talk about it now" got a little old to me.
>>>> Linus Torvalds deserves to be their more than Jobs.
>> Uh... wow. Just... like a huge, clueless... wow.
Seriously. I love Linux, but saying Linus has had a bigger impact than Jobs??? Puh-lease. Even under the "Apple stole the GUI from Xerox-Parc" argument, you cannot deny that Jobs brought the modern computer to the early-adopter mainstream and, in all fairness, Microsoft brought it to everyone.
Linux has made a huge impact, but Linus' contribution as a whole is a fraction of what Jobs and Gates have each personally done.
-p-
Very interesting interview I must say, nice to hear input from these two on the same, respectable level.
Jobs was a little smarmy but overall he was alright, and that Kara girl was annoying butting in every so often with some completely useless commentary.
Anyways, good interview nevertheless, they both had some interesting things to say and I can't help but grow in appreciation for computers in general when two 'legends' meet like this.
I think the interview was hugely revealing about Gates and Steve: That they are indeed big picture guys and "destroy the opposition" mentality is really for little minds. These guys go so far back that they can be chummy and say "Hasn't it been a great ride?" As Steve said (paraphrasing), "It's not about whether Apple can drive MS out of business. There were a lot of people at Apple who thought that way but it's irrelevant. It's about the future, not the past."
It would've been nice to see Jobs pull out the iPhone and let Bill use it, or touch it, something!

Steve Jobs is as much a brand (or part of Apple's brand) as he is a CEO. Maybe some think it's time to redesign that brand, but so far it's working out well for him.
The guy's got such a stage presence and aura of leadership, I don't see why he should change anything.
An interview of historic proportions.
The characters and their unique styles speak volumes about the history, present and future only alluded to in the actual dialogue.
I thought the most interesting remembrance between the two was when Apple flew Gates in to do the floating point work on software for MacII Woz wouldn't/couldn't do. Gates said he got paid $31,000. to do the job in a few days. Steve clearly tried to play that down. All in - very cool, very insightful.
Is it the editing or did Jobs keep pre-empting any comments by Gates, who seemed to mostly purse his lips and force a tense smile.
Steve jobs talked for like 90% of the time. Bill didn't even answer some of the questions. It shows Steve's popular public speaking skills he has sharpened over all the years of apple conferences.
Its amazing how different they are. Jobs speaks much better. Bill is thinking to much.
The interview made it sound like the guys are equal, on the same level. But I think bill is on a level on his own.
steve jobs is a pompous dick while bill is actually a nice academic sort of guy
Bryan: It would've been nice to see Jobs pull out the iPhone and let Bill use it, or touch it, something!
Jobs: "Psst. Hey Bill, wanna touch my iPhone?"
This Kara person is easily the most annoying and unfriendly person I have ever seen. How can someone be so snide and cynical with two friendly, smiling people?
Bill Gates is the man. Its funny how every time they ask Steve Jobs about what he believes the future of device will be his answer was always the iphone. Even though he didn't always say "iphone" he was implying it. Gates on the other hand said that he would imagine at least two separate deivces, one being like a smartphone, and the other being like a laptop or tablet. Bill Gates is a true visionary, giving his ideas on projectors, and cameras, and an interface that utilizes and recognizes natural movements of people, objects, and other devices. The Surface device is just the beginning of natural interface devices to come. Gates pulled a fast one on Jobs with the creation of the Microsoft Surface, now thats something that is revolutionary.
Also this is a little off topic, but I love how Jobs says that the iphone is something completely new. He always says, its these three things:
Its the best ipod ever.
Its a good cellphone.(Even hes knows its not the best cellphone and thus did not say best.)
The Internet in your pocket...for the first time ever.
He makes it seem like he made this new revolutionary cellphone formula being music, calling, and internet. But Im almost every phone out now has music calling and internet capabilities. You can argue that most phone do not offer the fully fledged internet. But last time I checked all windows mobile pocket pc devices have the full internet, so I can't understand how jobs gets away with saying that the iphone is the first device to offer the real internet.
Lastly, Bill Gates does sound like Kermit the Frog.
Worst. Interviewers. Ever.
I really felt embarrassed for them. All of them.
Steve Jobs is just to closed about his future ideas, or projects. Not a bad thing, but it gets boring for interviews, and what not.
I really liked Bill in this interview, what he spoke of made sense to me. The main thing I really enjoy from this interview though is that it really shows you how much experience these guys have in the industry, they are both pioneers in the technology and entertainment industry and have brought it this far together.
There is really only two things I take away from this interview:
1. it's all about the software
2. You got to love what you do
I'll take these two things to heart when I start up my business in the future.
I have to say perhaps these two guys have been in the industry for too long. Somehow I get the feeling that they are not dreaming as big as they once were when they started Apple and Microsoft. What Bill talks about the two separate devices is really not the future, but it's the present. We just don't have client devices that handle voice, motion, and touch yet. (Well we do just only in research labs)
Seeing what the Apple and Microsoft is trying to do, I think they really shouldn't be treated as competitors because they are focused on different side of this two tiered system. Apple is focused on device such as Ipod, IPhone, and AppleTV. These are light weight clients that meant to be connected to the Central processing unit whether it is a powerful desktop or laptop. Microsoft is still more focus on the software running on these central processing units and services that makes connection to client devices simple and possible. These include Windows, Office, DirectX or Dot Net, even Xbox is meant to be a central entertainment system then just a gaming machine. I think if these two companies work together they will probably dominate our lives. Why would Apple want to develop an OS that compete against Microsoft's market share or why Microsoft even bother with Zune is beyond me.
bigmonto: "Why would Apple want to develop an OS that compete against Microsoft's market share or why Microsoft even bother with Zune is beyond me."
why? competition and getting a hold of the market (customers + revenue) share that's why. Competitions promotes renovations and innovations, and without competitions we will be living in a world of stagnation.
Without competitions, you get monopoly and so therefore a market of industry controlled and not a market controlled by the consumers. Would you like to pay $500 for a phone that is 10-year out-dated because there is only one provider? ok, let me restate that, would you want to pay $500 for a Motorola V3 (1st gen), just because Motorola is the only developer and provider in 2007? It's not that old but I just want a popular product as an example.
Now for Steve's undisclosed vision of the future. I see that it is quite true. Anyone can dream and imagine. We all have our own vision of the future and what we want it to be, but are we ever always correct? We can dream but we are not time travelers or fortune tellers. The future is unpredictable, a single thing can influence and change it dramatically. For example, an innovation like the mp3 as a standard format. Look how that changed the entertainment and technology world to provide more renovations and innovations to accommodate it.
Well, last I check Microsoft pretty much have monopoly. Than again there are also other OS such as Linux, UNIX even if OS X is not in play. Of course my point is never that monopoly is not good for the customers but how I think Apple is positioned itself in the software industry. Even Jobs claim that it was really a lot of hard work to just increase their market share by 1%. Does it make sense for Apple? Perhaps, but then they are locked in an endless competition with Microsoft, who have a lot of money to burn.
Don't get me wrong I don't think Windows is better at all. I think OS X has a lot of great idea on UI and application that comes standard with the OS, these are what MS need to improve on.
