We have an endearment to cassette inspired gadgets and those who create them. For that reason, we applaud Chinavasion for their spectacular MP3 Cassette Player. It is shaped like a cassette. It is an MP3 player. Does it require any more tricks to seduce you? Probably not, but nonetheless, there is still a little something up its plastic sleeve.
The MP3 player is not shaped like an audiocassette without reason; it can actually be played through a cassette deck! It does not come supplied with any memory at all; you must supply your own SD/MMC card (2GB maximum). It shall only playback MP3 encoded tracks, has a USB2.0 connection, rechargeable battery and only supports Windows 2000 (anyone still use this?)/XP. Launch dates and pricing details not confirmed at present.
If you have wondered what your MP3s would sound like pumping out of archaic stereo deck you have lying about, wonder no more. Much like our once, thick, luscious hair, the cassette used to do quite a nifty job. Unfortunately, like our present day, sad comb over, the cassette is also forced into attempting to impress the ladies by pretending to be something it is not. It probably is not going to work out great for it either, but you have to love the effort. Take a bow Mr. Cassette MP3; we still love you with all of our partially balding heads. Guys, lose the comb overs—no one loves the effort. [Product Page via Technabob].

Wow, this technology has been out 5-6 years already!
Here's a review from 2005: [www.dansdata.com]
See, there's no need to sink a grand into Lasonic's new Ghetto Blaster. Buy this cheap player, throw in an SD card, and use it in an old Lasonic. Sure, it won't have the integration, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper alternative.
I still use Windows 2000
*tsk*
That's not just a cassette, it's two turntables too! A double Mesozoic technology whammy!
I think I'm gonna buy one. I'm definitely old enough to appreciate it. And my computer runs Win2K because I think the XP interface looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price.
My kinda gadget, yep.
wat is a cassette?!?!?
Still waiting for the 8-track version specifically for Win 3.0.
old news.....
Weren't there a few mp3 players that were the shape of a cassette tape...and actually worked in the tape deck?
[www.dansdata.com] :D
Yay!
Now if only I had a tape deck...
...to all the dansdata.com link posters, please show me one US store that sells it or something similar. I was looking for something like over the last two years, and couldn't find anything.
I'm not going to replace or upgrade the tape radio in my vintage car anytime soon :) These mono tapes from the 80s are so cool.
It was in all the large B&Ms in the US 3, 4 years ago. I bought one from Fry's, but returned it because a cassette adapter or FM broadcast device is a lot more convenient - you use whatever PMP you already have.
I would love to own one of these. It would actually be pretty useful for me. I have an older car, that still has the original cassette player in it (I'm too lazy to tear out the console and install a CD player.) The cassette to audio jack adapters' cords get in the way, so that's somewhat of a hassle. It's it's less than, say, $25, I'll grab one.
Wouldn't it be cool if the next previous shuffle buttons where to the side of it so you could actually control them on your car stereo? (well i own an old skoda favorit and has a blaupunkt cassette player on it, so there could be a use for it).
Plus any old walkman now works as an mp3 player so your chances of getting mugged are less.
What the hell - I have actually got one of these from 2001, some great reporting skills there Giz.
I agree, BAAAAAA:
I neglected to state that I had one of those MP3 players featured in the article I posted, but from a different company than the one featured. Of course, back then it only supported (I believe) a 128MB MMC card at the very max (correct me if I'm wrong).
Reiterating,
Way to go, Giz!
Good luck trying to find a cassette deck to play it in.
For anyone actually interested in this product, they're easy to find on eBay.
The Mobiblu player everyone is saying is "old news"...nowhere to be found.
@WMyers: it's because I bought them all, or tried to buy them... last 2 years on ebay: found 0... so please get in line to get one :)
Was it Mobiblu? I seem to remember another one from the 2000-2001 time frame.
Ahhh... yes, the Rome. [www.mp3daze.com]
A whopping 32MB of memory... fully upgradable to 64! :)
I use Win 2k. XP is just 2k with a glandular problem, and Vista is just not ready for primetime.
Old fat white guy here, um...DUMB?!?
I think it is much better to have a Mp3 or Mp4 to enjoy music. Go to 3w.cool-sale.com, it is a good place to chose some chinese products!
