Palm Treo 800w Details Leaked: WM6, Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev. A

800w.pngOur Sprint source gave us a great tip on the upcoming Treo 800w that's coming Q4 2007. (That's not a picture of it on the left.)

Lots and lots of improvements for Sprint users over what they can get right now with the 700wx, including EV-DO REV A., Windows Mobile 6, a 320x320 display (now supported on WM6), 256MB flash, 128MB RAM, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and an expansion slot.

The big ones are of course Windows Mobile 6, the increased speed of EV-DO Rev. A, Wi-Fi, and that larger screen resolution. The 320x320 resolution is square, yes, but nothing that Treo fans haven't gotten used to already. Plus, it's the first phone announced to support the 320x320 resolution that WM6 offers.

Sprint's aiming at a Q4 2007 release, but we'll see whether the phone's pushed up or back in the coming months.

Thanks tipster!

  • How about getting that Walrus-sized tooth pick out of there finally?

  • How about an internal antennae and a 2.0 MP camera and ditch that 1.3 MP one.

  • how about you just be glad it finally got wi-fi.

  • I left the treo for a 6700 due to lack of wi-fi. I think this phone will look like the 750/755. I will skip on the 6800 for this one. Great news!

  • I can't wait for this phone. All I wanted upgrades.

  • The internal antenna is a given, all the new models have gone that way. The 680, 750, and 755p all use the new form factor.

  • this is NOT a picture of the devcie, I have the feeling that it will be sans antenna when it arrives

  • I like to have that antenna...I relly don't like the internal antenna somehow.

  • I've got both a Treo 650 by Sprint w/ Palm OS (personal) and a Treo 750 by Cingular w/ WM5 (work).

My personal preference is the Palm OS. It's easier to use, less memory heavy and has ALOT fewer problems. I'm not sure how much longer the Palm OS has left to live, but it's the bowie knife in the wilderness. Well designed and utilitarian. Does what it's supposed to and is stable. Make mine Palm and I'll consider an 800.

P.S. Cingular sucks horribly. More dropped calls with this than with Sprint. I wish Verizon would have gotten the iPhone. Cingular's the dealbreaker on that one.

  • BigPanda, I hope you know it could easily be your particular phone or your calling area. That happened with a friend of mine. I currently have Sprint, and I'm more than ready to lose them from dropped calls and poor reception. 2 years ago, it wasn't that bad. Part of me realizes however, that if I got a different phone, that might help immensely. I'm going to at&t and Apple though.

  • They upgraded almost everything....but what about the uglyness?

  • This is what I have been holding out for. Built in GPS, WIFI, Mobile 6, Rev A! Skeet Skeet Skeet!

  • I have a 700w, love the EV-DO hate Windows Mobile 5, I would much prefer the Palm OS, I have fooled around with the 700p and it just makes more sense. WiFi, will be a nice but not necessarily important thing for me to have. I have not had a chance to play with Windows Mobile 6 so I will defer judgment, but I find that 5 may be a good OS for a UMPC but not for a phone.

  • verizon please?

  • My dream came true! I can't wait!

  • If they use the same SMS system as on the Palm OS (i.e. the nested texting, much like an IM conversation) then I'll be happy. That was one of the deciding factors in me getting the 700p over the 700wx.

  • This is the closest they will come to my dream phone reality. If Palm mods the WM6 just as the other companies are doing, then this could be a sweet phone. Hearing this news just made me postpone my decision on buying a PPC6800.

  • If I were to get a treo now, could I upgrade to WM6?

Here's something that Palm can bank on: the forthcoming Treo 800, scheduled to arrive by the holiday season.

  • @StackyBotrus: That "walrus sized toothpick" has already been removed from the Treo 755p. They clearly say that photo is not the 800wx

  • Too little, too late.

After Palm's arrogant statements about the iPhone:

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,'' he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.''

I raised my expectations for Palm. Specifically, I expect them to be able to make a phone that doesn't crash several times a day, has decent speakerphone volume, and is able to do simple things like sync photos and browse the web well without awkward third-party solutions.

Palm had the ability to put WiFi in their Treos for years, and denied customers this feature specifically so carriers could get more of our dollars for online data plans. Now that there is a real alternative, they finally pony up?

No thanks, Palm. I'll stick with the "PC guys" that just walked in.

  • What about a mini-usb connector for power and sync. That proprietary connector kills me. I'm selling my 750 because I refuse to carry yet another cable. No mini-usb - no purchase from me (not mentioning how stupid I am for not paying attention prior to purchasing the 750).

  • My prediction palm will be sold to sony within a year. I currently have a 650 but it will be my last treo. The form factor hasn't changed in years and the 800 specs are already available in other smartphones. Palm is playing catch up instead of being a innovator. Palm should create a slider phone similar to Sprint's mogul with a huge screen full qwerty 2gb memory, sd slot, mini usb connection for syncing/power and regular size stereo jack so i dont have to buy different headphones. bluetooth, wifi are standard. web browser that supports flash.

  • BigPanda,

I could not agree with you more on the quality of ATT service.

I also have a 750 from work and a Sprint 700p as a personal phone. Being a consultant, I travel a whole lot across the nation - and I have yet to find a place where ATT service is comparable to Sprint. And that's just voice.

If we go to 3G data, Sprint's EVDO coverage is far superior even to Verizon's. ATT on the contrary, has pokey GPRS coverage - not to even start talking about HSDPA.

    Just my two cents.
