Microsoft's Xbox 360 Incompatible with Apple's Airport Extreme 802.11n

Two can play the incompatibility game. It looks like Microsoft's getting back at Apple's "don't get Vista if you want to use iTunes" by telling Xbox 360 users not to get the new Airport Extreme because it's incompatible with their game console.

Apparently the 360's having trouble either with WPA/WPA2 security or routers with N-support, as a few Linksys and D-Link users are also reporting compatibility problems. Microsoft says they may update this in the Spring Dashboard update, but that won't be out for a couple months. For now either stay away from Apple's Extreme if you've got an Xbox 360 or hook it up via Ethernet.

  • This is also an incompatability with airport express and any security. Flipping microsoft sucks. Btw, im talking about WEP, WPA1, and WPA2 on an xbox 360 w/ microsoft wireless adapter. And yes, I called them and they said its a known problem they don't have a fix to. Great.

I like to use airports because I keep track of them all in the airport admin center, but so I can keep my network secure, I setup a seperate network just for my 360 with mac address filtering. Now, I have drilled ethernet to that room so I don't use it wirelessly anymore but gosh, what a pain that was.

  • I called 1-800-4MYXBOX when I first got my draft-N router and they said it was incompatible because of the WEP security I had chosen. It's not Apple's fault, it's Microsoft's.

I dont trust my 360 wirelessly and i dont feel like wasting 100 dollars on a Wi-Fi adaptor...

  • Can't you set WEP through a wireless bridge? That's what I'm doing now for my 360. (Unfortunately, it's only a wireless B bridge, but I"m sure most non-MS G bridges could be set seperately.)

  • Actually, this is Apple's along with every other vendor that has this problem.

They are using a specification that hasn't been released yet but yet they've managed to implement the specification thus causing devices to "play well."

Microsoft doesn't support the N-spec nor do they know how everyone else has implmented it. They have offered to help ALL vendors so their N spec routers will "play" with their system.

Here is short article of what's happened.

  • Good Tip Jomans!

Folks, to improve security (while unimproving it(but allowing your 360 to play nice with your N router))

    a)Turn off your SSID broadcast
    b)Turn on MAC address filtering
    c)Turn on IP address filtering/restrictions

This will only go so far in terms of security, and it wont prevent man in the middle attacks, but its certainly better than flying wide open.

By far, the best solution is (if not too much wiring) running ethernet cable between the router and 360, and turning that security back on!!!

  • My Extreme just showed up this morning (SWEET!!!). Since my 360 is connected via ethernet to my belkin router anyway, it probably won't affect me. Unless there's an issue w/ getting XP to pick up the express station (I'm sure I'll still be running in 802.11g). Just hope the USB feature on it works correctly.

  • i have just gotten my house wifi'd, and very soon after, i got a very pricey xbox wireless adapter, only to find that the WEP and WPA systems were completely incompatible. now my only other option is to run an ethernet cable alllllll the way upstairs and into the xbox >_<
