What iPhone Third-Party Apps Would You Like?

While the dust is still clearing from yesterday's All Things D (as in Digital, Damned, Drowsy, completely Delightful and even Dildonic at times), the best news for me has been Jobs' announcement that Apple is planning to open the Mac OS X Messiah-phone to developers. To achieve their need to balance security and openness, my guess is that they will follow more or less the iPod model: controlled distribution of Apple-certified, high-quality apps through a secure channel like the iTunes Music Store.

The question is: What current third-party Mac OS X applications would you like to see adapted to the iPhone? Which of them would actually reach a greater potential in the iPhone and become killer applications?

My wishlist and your own suggestions, after the jump.

Here are my Top 5 picks for the iPhone, according to coolness factor and personal preference.

5. ScummX. Pushing Guybrush Threepwood around with my finger? Aye aye, Sir! Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and the Indiana Jones series will work great with the iPhone touchscreen and resolution. That would be reason enough for me to buy one. And a three-headed monkey.

4. MacMAME. Like number 5, the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator is the ultimate productivity enhancer. Hundreds of outstanding classic arcade games that will also work perfectly on the iPhone just adding simple on-screen controls. And you will be able to play Galaga and the original Donkey Kong vertically. Doesn't get any better than that. (I will also put here a Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation and SNES emulator.)

3. Voice Candy. Brilliant voice processing application that will work great to record messages and leave voice mails. The interface is almost perfect for the iPhone as it is. Fun stuff.

2. Delicious Library. I guess Apple will integrate something similar to this amazing DVD/Book/Videogame database to make the iPhone work with the Apple TV and Front Row, but in the meantime, I want the Delicious Monsters to do their job.

1. Autodesk SketchBook Pro. Being a pixel-pusher, I would love to see an adaptation of this simple painting package. Thanks to Marking Menus, this one will work great on the iPhone and it will be really fun to play with. For some people, Autodesk should also sell a custom-made stylus (simulating the finger electrostatic charge) for even finer control.

I know that this is not representative of everyone, so please add your own suggestions in the comments and we will make a poll with all of them later. Except for Striptease Touch-me Poker. That doesn't require any poll.

  • I'm really looking to be able to edit Word and Powerpoint documents on the go. It'd be great for school.

  • I'd be looking for Outlook/MS Exchange integration...

  • i'd prefer a laser attachment. so i can blast stuff.

  • I would like to see GPS Navigation software via bluetooth

  • Awww, how cute is that picture?

All heads down for the big app gangbang.

  • Blackberry connect or ActiveSync would make this the phone for me.

  • AIM and SSH. That's all I really need above what it comes with. I'd like some games, especially PopCap ones, but the biggies are an AIM client and an SSH client.

  • Just give me a serviceable Tetris clone and I will be forever grateful.

  • I would kind of like to see a remote control system for Microsoft's iTable? Because that would leave my iTable much less fingerprinty. And if it allowed me to hack into a casino's iTable and peek at my opponent's cards, so much the better.

Seriously though: VNC and/or another Remote Desktop application would make the jPhone (Jesus Phone) a support person's dream machine. Not to mention it would totally justify the initial cost + the data rate plan that lets me reboot my server remotely from the bar.

  • Passwords Plus (or similar as long as it has the ability to import my data from Passwords Plus...)

    http://www.dataviz.com/products/passwordsplus/

This is, without a doubt, my most used app on my Treo. I use it many times a day. I have hundres of entries, including the multitude of servers here at work that all have very strong and cryptic passwords. This app is a *life saver*.

  • Skype!

  • Skype.

  • Sorry for the double post, didn't show up even after I refreshed the page. :/

  • VLC so i can play ALL video formats :)

  • I'd like to see an app that makes people a little bit less credulous and more skeptical about yet-released Apple products.

  • Some sort of Exchange push and the ability to view or modify Office documents. Please. Seriously, please. For the love of God please. Why does Apple always have to be leaving out us working stiffs? Why you always wastin' my flavor!?

I'm guessing that all this excitement about 3rd party applications might be nipped in the bud when folks realize that Apple and (especially) AT&T are not just going to open up the platform to any developers or applications. I think we'll see an approval process and an "on-deck" model for distribution that will mean the apps will be limited (no emulators, sorry) and expensive. But don't fret; I'm sure that Bubble Bobble will be available, as will all your Crunk games. For a price.

  • Waterfall's Wallet, Pages & Keynote, and Firefox. I know my older brother is chained to his Blackjack because he uses Outlook for all of his work scheduling.

It's not even necessary to port Outlook to the iPhone. Just provide a means for importing the Outlook planner to iTunes/iPhone every morning. There are already methods for importing/exporting calendar formats, why not just connect that to iCal and iTunes? The cherry-on-top would be to include alerts on the iPhone when an event has a reminder. Standardization makes it all simple!

  • eco mikekraz: Blackberry Connect

  • Solitaire Till Dawn.

    GraphicConverter.

  • Like Prototype, my vote goes for GPS (via small bluetooth module). I use a TomTom GPS that works with my Palm TX and I use it all the time. It's hands down one of the handiest gadgets I own.

  • Epocrates. A must have for medical professionals.

  • How has no one mentioned Adium yet? I'm still bothered that nothing on the iPhone website or any of the press releases have mentioned Instant Messaging...

  • I need Epocrates. It's the only application that I use on a daily basis that keeps me tied to a palm or windows device and prevents me from buying an iPhone

  • Also... that Automator guy looks like he's going to do something really gross to that iPhone.

  • I'd love to get adium and Growl on the iPhone. Adium for multi-protocol chat, and some form of Growl to keep me informed on what's happening on my mac.

  • Inesoft's Cash Organizer Pro. Need to keep track of my expenses you know. Also, Flexwallet would be nice since it's a nice program I use to store all of my passwords and account info on absolutely everything. Also, a nice chess game would be cool. Oh, and I don't know if it's already there but a Finder would also be nice. And how about the ability for me to cook my own version of that tiny OS10 so that I could hack it up a little bit more? Wishful thinking here but what the hell, you asked Gizmodo. Nice pic BTW.

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 12:19 PM on 05/31/07 *

iTunes visualization with multitouch interaction. Also, the Cube plugin that comes with rockbox would be much better if the interaction were touch based.

  • Skype.

I want to be on a phone call using my cell carrier, walk into WiFi range, conference call in my Skype account, and then hang up the wireless and continue the call on Skype -- for essentially $0.

While I'm dreaming, I'd also like a pony.

  • Here's my wishlist:

    1. WiFi Hotspot Finder and Autoswitcher- Purportedly, the iPhone comes with such a feature. But in case it doesn't, or in case it doesn't work as expected, I'd like to see a hotspot finder with autoswitching that seamlessly selects open hotspots, especially given the lack of 3G on the phone.

    2. Orb or Orb like interoperability with OS X- Streaming of media content over the internet and home networks is gaining a lot of attention and is a feature that I'd like to see in the iPhone. If AppleTV can stream content off your laptop why not the iPhone? I believe Sony is opening up the PSP with these features, and current Smartphones have several solutions including Orb and the Slingbox.

    3. Pedometer- I'm curious if the built in motion sensors and accelerometers on the iPhone can be adapted to be used like a built in Nike +?

    4. GPS Mating via Bluetooth- Since the iPhone lacks built-in GPS it would be nice to be able to mate the iPhone with 3rd party GPS units either via Bluetooth or a connector.

    5. Video-conferencing/IM/VoIP- They're probably not quite there yet, and given the absence of a forward facing camera (unless one is hidden under the home button) it may still be a while, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Video iChat would be great. And a Skype client that works over WiFi would be appreciated as well.

  • The app I use the most on my Treo is this alarm clock called Treo Alarm that allows me to set my own alarm sound and it updates the weather when the alarm goes off. I use it all the time when traveling. That's all I want. Well, that and for the iPhone to proactively solve tech needs I don't even know I have yet.

    That's all.

  • Slingplayer Mobile for iPhone!

  • @MisterSpoot
thats my dream too, except for the pony, i would preffer an airplane =)

  • PLEASE Filemaker Pro/Mobile! They are still owned by Apple right?

  • I'd like a third party app to replace each and every one of my consumer electronics and widgets... iTomTom. iSlingBox. iDVD Player. iGameBoy. iFax. iRSA Token. iMedical Alert. iAlarm System Remote. iCarKeys. iAlarm Clock.

With full OSX, virtually ubiquitous internet connection, and external expansion ports (i.e. dock) what couldn't be put onto an iPhone?

    ##begin rant##
I'll tell you what... How about the kind that saves lives and makes a real difference in the world? How about the kind that that makes the latest technologies accessible to our first-responders?

    http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6766
    http://www.darpa.mil/body/archives/sensit/PI_Briefs/Rosenb...
    http://www.llnl.gov/str/JanFeb02/Langlois.html

Other platforms have managed to solve the 3rd party app problem quite easily (Blackberry, Symbian, Palm, WinCE, Linux, etc).

Quit making stupid excuses Steve about why you want to make the platform a closed development environment you greedy jerkwad... Why should our lives depend on substandard technologies like Palm and WinCE?

SCREW YOU STEVE JOBS, STANLEY SIGMAN and the rest of you closed-platform money grubbing whores!
    ##end rant##

(Now that I have that incoherent rant out of my system, I feel better)

  • If it were to truly replace my PowerBook as my primary computer, it would need AIM w/chat room ability and Turbo Tax. I could live without everything else, but it absolutely needs those two.

  • My vote is for Striptease Touch-me Poker.

  • Nethack

  • Games! Lots of 'em!

    Give me:

    Battle for Wesnoth
    KrossWordz
    Solitaire till Dawn
    XWords
    Oxyd
    etc etc

    And then:

Adium (Or any IM client, this is must-have)
    SlingPlayer
    random stupid widgets
    quicktime plugins
    ...

  • definitely sirfSTAR III GPS capability via bluetooth.

and definitely SketchPad. i use that almost daily with my Wacom tablet. to be able to sketch some basic idea on the Metro in D.C. then sync that up with my work/home machines and expand them: nirvana. i have so many good ideas that i lose before i can get off the train. heh.

if there is a Sling client for the iPhone, i'll defintiely buy a Slingbox for home. easily.

  • Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0...and sadly I'm serious, because only then would my company let me use the a&oPhone to connect to their servers (Outlook).

I agree with some posters that I don't think they're going to open this up very much. Not after all the Jobsinese about "hardware is just the packaging for great software..." He feels like OSX and Safari are the bees knees so why bother with Linux/MSFT and Firefox.

And I still think it should have a QWERTY, despite what the wide world of Cupertino says.

btw a&o = Alpha and Omega

  • I would simply like the iPhone first.

    Then Vectorworks.

  • @gecko85... ditto on the Password Plus app. I don't use that one, but my Treo 650 is lost without an organization tool like that.

I personally use eWallet from Iliumsoft
    http://www.iliumsoft.com/

Also ListPro from the same company.

And of course, I would love to have Pocket Quicken
    http://www.landware.com/pocketquicken/index.html

I could think of many others, but these are at the top of list for me to consider an iPhone.

  • Internet radio over WiFi and/or EDGE. Say goodbye to satellite radio.

  • All of the software below is already available to my current phone - a pocketpc phone. The iPhone is sexy and seems easier to use - but once you're used to the software below, why switch to a lesser phone unless you just use it as a phone. The iphone has so much potential - why not include:

    1. Sync software for Outlook contacts, calendar, tasks, emails. Can't live without this, no discussion - just do it, and not just for the Mac.
    2. Skype. Doesn't work well on my current PocketPC, wish it will on the iphone - free calls baby, the way it was meant to be.
    3. Tomtom or equivalent. Google maps is nice, for desktops, not actual driving. I have Tomtom on my pocketpc and been using it for years.
    4. A push email client (if it isn't already included with the iphone)
    5. Java so I can run all those java games.

    6. VLC - view ANY movie
    7. MSN (or trillian or whatever MSN compatible client)
    8. An Avantgo type alternative - reading offline website feeds is real nice when no connection is available.
    9. Ooh and a PDF/eBook reader for those long commutes.
    10. Not really software, but I'd love to hook it up to USB mass storage devices and card readers (would rather not lug that laptop on vacation for those huge digital pictures.)

  • mmm...VPN much? I would like to be able to get onto my campus network with the Wi-Fi using a Cisco VPN.

  • Wow, gutterisatool, I was surprised that no one had suggested VPN until I scrolled all the way down here and saw this juicy nugget.

People, no iPhone music apps? You know, to mix and scratch on the go.

That multi-touch surface is begging for that, no? Are there any apps like this you think should be adapted for iPhone?

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 01:07 PM on 05/31/07 *

An expense-tracking app will really be awesome. One that will use the camera to photograph the receipts. Any definitive beautiful app for this?

  • I'm easy.

    Terminal.

    Or XTerm if I'm greedy.

The thought of running Vectorworks on an iPhone made me laugh.

  • How about...

    * Final Cut Studio Mobile
    * Adobe Photoshop Mobile
    * Mathematica Mobile
    * AutoCAD Mobile
    * Parallels Mobile with Windows Vista support
    * Windows Mobile Emulator so I can run StyleTap Palm OS Emulator
    * WAP Browser (hehe)

    but seriously...

    * LogMeIn / CoRD / Apple Remote Desktop /
