You know I need breakfast asap when I read maple and cherry and the only thing I can think about is syrup, pancakes, and pie. And a giant coffee, please. Unfortunately, these wooden speakers for all iPods are not edible.

Fortunately, I've a nice diner near my house. For those of you interested in these Buffalo wooden speakers, however, you should know that they work without batteries. That's convenient, although you shouldn't expect boombox thump. They are not pasted in Photoshop. They are not giant tapes. They are not even painted. They are bas-relief mosaics made with old wood cuts. There are more:

According to Ron van der Ende:

I collect old doors and stuff. Old painted wood that I find in the street. I take it apart and skin it to obtain a 3mm thick veneer with the old paint layers still intact. I construct bas-reliefs that I cover with these veneers much like a constructed mosaic. I do not paint them!

I want some of these so badly.
Wooden Automata iPhone Dock Cranks From Vertical to Horizontal

This Automata iPhone Dock by Murtaza Lakdawala is clever and useful, a combination rarely found in DIY projects. All you have to do is crank and the dock turns from vertical to horizontal.

Just like in cars, the next evolution is to eliminate the crank and have an automatic version. Preferably one that you can push down on once and it'll crank all the way, but that can also turn slowly when you hold it down, for a more dramatic rotation.
Docomo Teases World to Pun their "Touch Wood" Prototype

Aside from a name that clearly doesn't mean in Japanese what it does in English, Docomo's Touch Wood phones deserve a bit of attention.

The kidney-shaped, iPhone-like handset is constructed from a Cypress wood base that's been compression molded for extended durability. Despite this manufacturing process, each phone retains a unique grain pattern, color palate and woody aroma. And, just so you don't have to feel bad about it, the wood is considered "surplus" from "forest-thinning operations."

Docomo will be showing off prototypes in Japan later this week. And while we'll probably never see the phones reach the US, we can't get over the fact that wood seems a lot more classy than plastic. We'll never live it down.

Italian scientists have developed a new "wood-derived bone substitute" that promises to be better than ceramic or metal implants. They start with a block of wood like red oak, burn it until the block is essentially charcoal and then coat the substance with calcium.

The "bone" takes about a week to produce at a cost of around $850. And while it's not quite as cool as titanium, the spongier structure handles natural impacts better, and other bones prefer the calcium carbon mix to space shuttle alloys.

So much for my awesome robot legs. [Discovery]

"Personally, I am fascinated by how the world is changing into a digital world. To me it seems that; the digital world is personal but not private at all. For example, when I Google to find information about a friend, I will most likely find information about his life, his pets, his company and maybe a review on a digital camera that he has recently written. Notice that the digital verb 'Googling' has recently got the status of a real verb in the Netherlands. Just another example how the two worlds become one." Dear diary 1.0 is thus both the literal and the figurative manifestation of the worlds colliding. A physical reminder that increasingly, the real and the digital are becoming indistinguishable.

It's deep, but at least I see Romberg's point—not like this ridiculous Spaceballs lamp. Out of wood.

Nikolay Polissky is an artist who trades primarily in giant, incomprehensibly weird wooden sculptures. Apparently (as in, obviously) his intention in building this "Large Hadron Collider" wasn't to create something with much aesthetic similarity to the LHC, but something that captures its essence.
A carpenter in a Chinese village, perhaps unwilling to spend what would amount to a month's pay on a bicycle, has created a 100% wooden one to ride around town instead.

55-year-old Peijia Wu, from Shandong province, allegedly took three months to build his DIY wooden bike. It features no metal parts whatsoever – joints are fixed with small wooden bungs and a rod-crank system has replaced where the chain would normally be.

Ingenious! It's like a stair master and a bike rolled into one and it's probably less likely to fall apart than other wooden bike models.
I think it is safe to say that design student Kyle Buckner is more than just an iPhone user—he is an iPhone worshiper. After all, the iPhone sits atop his elaborate wood-carved pedestal like a King on his throne. Is this the beginning of some sort of cult? Will there be robes and chanting? Truth be told, the sculpture was carved for a school project—but throw an actual dock in there and Buckner would be the envy of Apple superfans everywhere. It was created especially for him by English sculptors and CNC/rapid-prototyping masters Morpheus, which probably explains the hyper-detailed interlocking pieces and general laser-like precision, which is even more apparent in this close-up shot.

This 16GB Mahjong USB Drive Costs $550?!

If you thought the Chinese were going to undercut cheap Japanese USB drives with even cheaper versions, you've been drinking too much contaminated powered milk. These Mahjong drives are custom-engraved with three letters, such as the character on Mahjong pieces, your name or whatever dirty phrase you can come up with. They're also $490 for an 8GB version and $550 for the 16GB version. If that's slightly extravagant, you can go for the darker wood, which knocks $100 off both those units. But c'mon, aren't we a nation that drives gold-plated Cadillacs? I think we can spare $500 for a USB drive.
WoodStation Defiles Mother Nature Just to Tell You the Time

The WoodStation isn't your standard LED clock/weather station. It's your standard LED clock/weather station that's made of wood. Through a seamless block of lumber design, the inert WoodStation is motion activated to display glowing information pseudo-magically. In reality, a series of LEDs are hidden beneath a thin wooden facade. These LEDs are bright enough to not only shine through the wood when activated, but maintain fine visibility in direct sunlight. And we're guessing that the weather info is gathered through an internal barometer. While this photo appears to be a concept rendering, the actual product is slated to go on sale at Amazon France for about $135 in a few weeks.
Balsa Wood Canon DSLR Gives Us the Inevitable

This balsa wood Canon DSLR is a perfect object of desire for both photography aficionados and people who like crafts—which is not going to be any of you, judging from the zero entries in the Gizmodo Arts & Crafts contest. The steps are really simple, and the results—as you can see in the image—look great.

Columbia professor Douglas Irving Repetto designed this crazy looking project which allows humans to write obsessive thoughts on scraps of paper, deposit them in one of seven squirrel cages, and spin them round and round to let the machine obsess for them. Made with grape arbor, glue, rubber bands and a laser cutter, the apparatus utilizes “parallel processing to the age-old problem of broken human minds.” Yeah, I'm not sure I quite get it either, but it sure is pretty.
Man Travels Back in Time to 1738, Brings Laptop and LCD Display With Him

DVICE calls this the most luxurious office cubicle, but we see the world's first time traveler. Here's what we think: Mr. Jared Nelson discovered the secret of time travel. He then packed up his favorite gear, which includes his Dell laptop, an LCD display, headphones, a digital camera which he used to take this photo, his office phone (he likes teleconferencing?) and his leather chair that he swiped from the VP when Dan was on vacation.

After getting back to 1738, he recreated his cubicle the best he could out of parts available at that time. Jared then proceeded to live out the remainder of his life—all 10 days of it—sitting in that cube and suffering from malaria.
Fujitsu Gets Into the Wooden Laptop Business for Milan Furniture Show

This rather worthy-looking laptop is Fujitsu's WoodShell. Made with cedar wood, it's part of the Japan Design Innovation 2008 exhibit at the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile in Milan, an event for furniture strokers everywhere. There's a picture of the WoodShell with its lid down below, and you've got to love Fujitsu's take on a generic 70s sci-fi font, not to mention its black-and-red-ness.

At last year's Salone Internazionale Del Mobile, you may remember that Sony got all hot and heavy with a bunch of master craftsmen. The event takes place from April 16 to 20, and we'll keep our beadies out for all the best stuff on show.

Shuhei Ogawara spent two years of his life collecting 7,382 wood disposable chopsticks from his office cafeteria, glued them together in three months, and applied a polyester coat to build this 13-foot long, 66-pound canoe. This is heavier than a regular canoe, so he still doesn't know if it's going to float or not. What do you think?

We don't really care if it floats or not, quite frankly. We think it's cool enough as it is. With his patience, the next thing Mr. Shuhei would most probably build will be a 1:1 72,800-tonne replica of the battleship Yamato, complete with four 19.7-foot propellers and nine 18.1-inch cannons, all made from gluing about 15.2 million soy sauce containers, 26.3 million empty bento boxes, and an undetermined amount of old mochi for coating. The folks at Fecal Face managed to catch up with him and ask a few questions—and the brief peek inside his mind that resulted is interesting to say the least. For those who want to check out his stuff in person, Rea has a solo exhibition coming up at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia from April 3-June 15, 2008.

The Chute Smartphone concept is a vision of the future, a future where cellphones are made of Bamboo, where cellphones have names like Chute and where <strike>pot is not outlawed</strike> renewable sources of energy have finally reached ubiquity. The details on the gadget that lies beneath the woody exterior is not mentioned beyond it being functional and powerful, but what more could we ask for in a smartphone? The unique feature is the Bamboo casing, which actually has some benefits over plastic, including its stronger build, lighter weight and far more environmentally friendly production. Bamboo is also completely biodegradable, which means the Lion King could explains its life in epic fashion to a cub lion.
S(tool) Turns Garden Fork into Garden Chair

It's been a long summer day tending the garden and you need to sit down, but there is no chair in sight. If only you were using the S(tool), then you wouldn't have to worry about finding one. Designed by Langton Stead, the S(tool) is a bent wood handle with two garden forks on either side. All you have to do is shove them into your lawn, and BAM!, instant chair. The perfect gift for the laziest green thumb you know, it's available directly from the designer, though no word on price. Designed by Singgih Kartono, it is made from sustainable wood instead of nasty non-biodegradable plastic like every other audio gadget out there.

The idea behind this phone concept is that it brings ideas together from past and present with its wood styling and smartphone functionality. The designer says the wood and rock casing is supposed bring together nature and technology, but it just looks like a piece of 70s tech to me (see the bluetooth headset with analog knobs).

16 year-old Marco Facciola built this completely wooden bike for a school project, managing to avoid using any metal at all. Yes, this wooden wheeled wonder even has a chain and gearing made of wood, held together with wooden joints and glue. The detail in the free-wheeling ratchet and spacers between the chain links, pinned with tiny dowels, is amazing. Marco had to complete this as a non-academic project for his International Baccalaureate, and inspiration came from his grandfather, forced to make wooden wheels for his bike during the war due to rubber shortages.
The world's number one consumer of wood for casemods, Jeffrey Stephenson, has created another machine called the Pico Bayard. But the TV sure looks like it's got wood, and that's enough for us. Sacrificing the illusion of colors that pop by ditching a conventional black frame, the LCD display still holds its own with full 1080p resolution at 120Hz (cutting down on motion artifacts greatly when compared to older, 60Hz sets). Aside from the unique design, the only other detail of merit is a USB port that allows the playback of MP3s and photos. Otherwise these are pretty standard, higher-end LCDs coming in 42", 47" and 52" sizes. The sets are Korea only for now, and we're hoping they display images other than mimes. Named Splinter, the supercar is being constructed as a serious attempt to explore the uses of wood as a bulding material for vehicles, so it's even loaded with a supercharged 600-hp V8 engine that should really give it a roar. More info and photo gallery after the jump.

A group of students from North Carolina State University, led by industrial design student Joe Harmon, are building Splinter as part of a thesis project. Harmon and his car dons intend to look at how to work with wood in car designs, so Splinter even has wooden components in its suspension and chassis.

Crafting a car like this has required them to come up with some innovative uses of laminated wood—the wheels are made of carefully cut and layered oak veneers strong enough to take the stress of a 2,500-pound body—that's as heavy as two Smart cars. And how do you stop the heat from its powerful mid-located V8 from setting fire to the body? Turn parts of it upside down so the exhaust vents over the top of the engine, and incorporate the muffler into the rear wing, where it can also aid downforce.

Inside the car the passengers' legs go between the arms of the suspension, which sounds kinda dangerous, but clearly the team has thought long and hard about it. They want project Splinter to "explore materials, learn, share ideas and stimulate creativity." And go bloody fast. – Kit Eaton [Winding Road via Autoblog]

One half modern and one half vintage, the gorgeous oak detailing is built upon a 1981 Opel with 100 horsepower.
The LG Shine Wood LG-LB2500H, by all logical reason, should be made of wood. And while the Wood does sport a fine wood grain, users will be saddened to realize that no trees were killed in the making of this phone or its painted visage.

Other than that, this Korea-only phone sports goodies you will never be worthy of (like DMB television, an electronic dictionary and the near-magnetic attraction of pretty Korean models).

If there's one piece of tech that's suffered from quick commodification, it's the USB flash drive—which is all the more reason that original products stick out in the market. We've seen wooden flash drives before, but these flash drives from Thalbach Design are heirloom material. Veneered in polished and oiled maple, ash and even a 150 year old burled wood (pictured above), a 4GB stick will run you $135, but you are a big important CEO who burns the midnight oil squeezed fresh from "used up" Benjamins anyway, so what is a little extra cash for some classy gear?
Wooden Creative Zen Stone

Captain Ødegård created this Creative Zen Stone out of pine, although he seems to have accidentally scaled up the dimensions to a huge 8.25" x 5.5" x 2". Check out a video of it in use after the jump.

It's internal components aren't actually from a Creative because they're too expensive in the Captain's home country of Norway, but it does provide 4GB of SD card storage space. The wooden Zen also has a rechargeable battery, but I wouldn't want to attempt carrying this thing around. [Captain Ødegård]

Magnetic Toaster Tongs Protect Fingers

Getting toast out of your toaster without lighting your fingers (or eyes, if you turn it upside down and shake it like we do) on fire is difficult. With these magnetic toaster tongs, you can reach in and grab your toast, then stick the tongs back on the side of your toaster when you're done. Sure, wooden tongs means they may actually light on fire too, but...uh...whatever!
