O Canada: Bungie-centric Xbox 360 Bundle Heads Up North

Microsoft has a new Bungie-focused Xbox 360 bundle, but it's only coming to Canadians. Finally, something to be proud of, Canadians!

Joining the ranks of SCTV, Vancouver's lax pot laws and universal health care in the short list of things Canucks can brag about, this new bundle comes with a 360 Elite, two controllers, Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. This will set you back CAD$400, or $380 in USA dollars. It's for sale now, but much like the popularity of hockey, this deal won't last for long, so hop on it if you're going to.
Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter Review

Sure, wireless n is great and everything, but if you told me I'd be streaming media between 2 and 3x faster through Microsoft's new Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter (802.11a/b/g/n) than their old a/b/g version, I'd never have believed you.

The Price

$100ish (cheaper at retail)

The Verdict

If you upgrade to the new Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter from the old, 802.11g version, you won't notice any difference while gaming. But media streaming over your home network will see a legitimate speed increase.

For a moment, let's ignore Microsoft's traditionally ridiculous price for their Xbox 360 Wi-Fi adapters. Instead, let's just focus on performance.

Upgrading from 802.11g networking to 802.11n has a few key advantages: range is longer, speeds are faster and, since 802.11n sits on the 5GHz band, you won't interfere as much with 2.4GHz frequencies used by 802.11g and basically everything else in existence.

But there's one big thing that stops 802.11n from being any better than 802.11g for gaming: latency. Overall throughput may be faster on 802.11n (the pipe is bigger), but latency is really no less present than on 802.11g (it takes just as long for that first burst of water to come through). So those quick gaming commands aren't faster on n, and my multiplayer testing (Modern Warfare 2 and Borderlands...it was a real chore) confirmed it. Then again, I didn't really notice any lag over my 802.11g adapter to begin with.

Media streaming, however, is where those big throughputs pay off. Using Connect360, I streamed HD episodes of Mad Men from my Mac to the Xbox. I timed from the moment I hit play to to the first frame of video playback. And the difference was noticeable.
Buffering occurred between 2 and 3x faster, which was well beyond my expectations, despite how fast 802.11n is on a spec sheet. Clips went from taking as many as 15 seconds to playing (rounding up) to actually breaking the 5 second barrier. I'd love to have tested 1080P streaming over Live as well, but my DSL is the bottleneck in that scenario.

Yes, the Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter is still profanely expensive. No, if you have an older adapter (or you're just using some other solution), I wouldn't recommend the upgrade (nor do I think Microsoft is even marketing it that way). But it's nice to see a tangible improvement all the same.

Phil Schiller Talks App Approval, Avoids Saying Much of Anything

There are lots of legitimate concerns about Apple's app approval (app!) policy, and in a recent profile in Business Week, Senior VP Phil Schiller goes out of his way to not respond to any of them. Yes, we understand that there are legitimate reasons for having an extensive approval process, and we even appreciate the complication-free results. But Schiller neglected to respond to any of the real problems with the process, like, say, the Google Voice ban. We're always interested to hear an Apple higher-up discuss the App Store, but we prefer it when something's actually said. [Business Week]

Microsoft Reiterates Smackdown on Pirate Xbox Users

In response to Microsoft's mass banning of Xbox Live users with pirate leanings, said pirates are contemplating hitting them with a class-action lawsuit—but Microsoft doesn't seem even a little bit scared. MS's response:

Piracy is illegal and modifying an Xbox 360 is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use. Microsoft is well within its legal rights to ban these users from Xbox Live.

Translation: Hey, you guys down there, you piratey types? Cute lawsuit and all, but you ain't got a chance in hell of winning this.

This winds up in Remainders because the lawsuit is still, as of now, speculative—no such suit has actually been filed. Still, that's about as big an ice burn as you're likely to see from the big MS. [Kotaku]

iPhone Magnification Camera Mod Came From the Recycle Bin

Bummed about the iPhone's lack of zoom? Bummed enough to attach the lid from a pickle jar to the back of your iPhone? Here's a tutorial for how to create a multi-zoom add-on with items found in your recycle bin and a few lenses pried off deceased cameras. It's ungainly as hell, and I'm not totally sure the iPhone's camera is good enough to be worth such effort ugliness, but it does seem like it would work and it even has an external flash. And, of course, we've seen much dumber mods before. [Instructables via Engadget]

Another Anonymous Netbook/Sleeping Aid Hits Wireless Carrier

Another day, another netbook. AT&T brings the LG X120 10.1-incher Stateside to be sold, subsidized of course, through Radioshack.com and the obviously so much more hip brick and mortar version, The Shack. It'll be sold for $180 with a 2-year contract, which requires a $60 per month data charge. As far as specs, it's got a 160GB hard drive, 1GB memory, a 1.6GHz Atom and Windows XP, and in case of emergency will function as a sleeping aid so potent you might never wake up. What I'm saying is, it's in Remainders because seriously you guys, snore. [Engadget]

Banned Xbox Users Plan a Class-Action Lawsuit, Accuse Microsoft of a Vast Conspiracy

Microsoft recently banned a whole lot of modded consoles. Was it to prevent piracy, or was it a conspiracy? A new lawsuit is positing the latter theory.

Here's what Texas-based law firm AbingtonIP says to justify their new suit:

Although modification of Xbox consoles is arguably against the terms of use for Xbox/Xbox Live, Microsoft 'conveniently' timed the Xbox console ban to coincide with the release of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game and less than two months after the release of the very popular Halo 3: ODST game.

I'm not sure that modding consoles is "arguably" against the terms of use; it is against the terms of use. And why wouldn't they want to keep people from pirating their biggest game of the year?

Certainly, anyone who is banned who hasn't modded their console has a legitimate bone to pick with Microsoft, and there's no defending their heavy-handed banning tactics and their collateral damage. But to suggest they're intentionally banning legit accounts in order to get people to sign up again, well, that's pretty stupid. [TG Daily via Engadget]

The millions of Xbox Live players who were banned because of their modded Xbox 360 consoles may get a second chance with some firmware workarounds. Beware though, it's a complicated process.

First you'll need to get iXtreme LT, which'll attempt to return your console to a playable state. The catch is that you need to know your CPU code and that the instructions rely on a lot of different (free) tools.

Has anyone used this or another workaround to get their Xbox playing again? [DailyTech via Crunchgear]

Now Is a Bad Time to Buy a Used Xbox 360

You know those Xboxes that were banned last week because they were modified to play pirated games? They're being dumped onto eBay and Craigslist by their owners, and they won't all tell you that those consoles are banned from Live.

So our recommendation is that if you really can't spare the money to buy a new Xbox—which you should really do, since the failure rate still isn't that low—is to make sure you ask the seller whether or not it's been banned from Live. If you're buying it in person, off of Craigslist, make sure you have them plug it in and show you that it can. If you're buying it on eBay, well, you'll just have to take their word. Just be careful, because Microsoft has no pity on you for buying a used Xbox that's been banned. And sometimes, apparently, connected to Xbox controllers.

Researchers at Iowa State University have designed software that can quickly and simply render a detailed 3D model of a patient's MRI and CAT scan results. The software, called BodyViz, claims two core advantages over similar technologies: It's easier to use, and it's set up to use with an Xbox 360 controller out of the box because, let's face it, to the latest crop of med school grads, old-school mice and trackballs are lame, bro.

Add a couple of stock FPS weapons, hook this thing up to some robotic arms with knives, fire up the laparoscope and bam: surgery, revolutionized.
It really does look nice, like an Xbox 360 Elite with military-ish decals all over it. For most of you it's not worth trading in your current Xbox 360 for, but if you're new to the game, or you just want to upgrade from a 20GB drive to the massive 250GB drive contained (and only available) here, it's not a bad deal.

LEAK: Project Natal Shipping in November 2010 with 14 Games for Under $80?

That's a lot of information to swallow in the headline, but a leakster to MCV (a respected UK gaming pub) may have outed Project Natal launch plans early.

The information is apparently the result of behind-closed-door meetings in the UK between Microsoft and third party developers. Microsoft will be manufacturing 5 million Natals for a worldwide launch in November 2010 (some of those standalone, some of those in 360 bundles), and price is a major concern for the company. Those who left meetings were under the impression that Natal alone will run anywhere from $50-$80 with 14 games included—"impulse buy" territory.

I've always expected that Natal would launch inexpensively, closer to new Wii hardware and PS webcams than an actual new console. But $50 would be a very tempting sweet spot, indeed. [MCV via Kotaku]

Dealzmodo: $100 Xbox 360 at Amazon, More Electronics Deals All Day Long

Remember that Walmart ad featuring a $100 Xbox? Well, Amazon is matching the offer, so you can skip the crowds. There'll be other electronics deals running all day starting at 9 a.m. EST. Update:

It looks like the Amazon 9 a.m. deal ran out (<strike>not before I managed to grab one, natch</strike>), but the same deal will be running again at 12 p.m. PST, 3 p.m. EST. So don't despair, there's a second chance! Also, Walmart is now featuring the deal online. Man holiday price competitions rule.

And also, anyone who thinks they got the Xbox deal, MAKE SURE to check your order confirmation. If you didn't get a $0.01 discount with the phrase "Lightning Deal" next to it, you won't be receiving a credit. I just checked mine and sure enough, I'm SOL, so I cancelled.
New Xbox 360 Warranty Stickers Better Guarantee Chastity?

Apparently, Microsoft is slapping a new style of void-if-removed warranty stickers on Xbox 360s that are sent in for repair. Why? With no facts to back us up, we must call upon our favorite pastime: crazy-eyed speculation.

The new sticker, found under the faceplate (just like the old one), looks a bit bigger and features both a code and a mysterious black bar.

Maxconsole forum members already came up with some interesting/believable theories: Could this code be tracked to your serial number, in case you open the machine and want to seal it back up with a fraudulent sticker? Could this black bar be heat-sensitive tape that would change color should you try the classic hot box trick to repair an RRoD? Could this sticker contain a tiny capsule of cyanide meant to crack under duress, eradicating the modding community one lonely guy at a time?

We don't know. But what seems obvious is that Microsoft is taking their warranty stickers a bit more seriously.

For reference, here's what the old sticker looked like:

Go nuts with accusations in the comments while we wait for Microsoft to give us an official answer.
Major Nelson, updating us on a periodic Xbox Live purge—banhammering cheaters, pirates and other folks of ill-repute, though not 12-year-olds—reminds us of Microsoft's official policy that if you buy a used Xbox 360 that's been banned, you're screwed.

The crux of the matter is that the warranty on an Xbox 360 "is not transferable," so if you buy a used console "that has been previously banned, you will not be able to connect to Xbox LIVE." So if you buy a used Xbox 360, make sure it's from a less-than-shady party—and if you buy from a used games shop, make 'em connect it to Xbox Live so you know you're getting something that works.
Remainders: Stuff We Didn't Post (And Why)

I have a splitting headache. There was so much real news today, mostly Android-y, we happily skipped this junk: GM's Wi-Fi, Apple Store POS, Virgin/Helio, Xbox Sky and a Blu-ray player only dumb people will buy. Dun dun DUN.

GM's offering in-car internet for $500 and +$29 a month. Great! This is a stupid thing to get—think about devices like the MiFi, and ask yourself who would buy this. Plus, do you really want to buy a GM? If you go American, go Ford. They have cool tech! Apple stores are ditching those clunky handheld point of sale computers—which are Windows-run—for iPod touches that can do the same thing. There's no way to write this story up without making an easy Microsoft joke, which isn't fair because those point of sale units have been a big part of why Apple stores have been such easy places to drop loads of cash.
Hey Microsoft: We Need Aliases for Xbox Live Gamertags

I love Xbox Live, I really do. But man, how am I supposed to keep track of what usernames my friends are using? We need aliases, and we've needed them for a while.

On Adium, the AIM client I use, I put in aliases for everyone on my buddy list. How the hell am I supposed to remember everybody's ancient screennames that are references to something obscure from high school? Instead, they come up as, you know, their names.

On Xbox Live, I have literally no idea who some of my friends are. I have vague guesses based on their avatars, and I knew who they were when I added them, but everybody has such goddamned goofy usernames, it's impossible to keep track of them all.

Wouldn't it be easy to allow people to enter their real names as well and then give users a choice about which to display, the handle or the real name? Or allow people to create custom aliases for each person on their friends list? Because not knowing who your friends are kind of defeats the purpose of having a friends list in the first place, doesn't it?

Netflix Streaming Coming to Another Mystery Device Soon

In yesterday's earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed that streaming would soon arrive on a mystery device with a "material installed base." Hey, Reed, could you do me a favor? Please make it the PS3.

Normally I wouldn't ask, but you and I have a connection. No, not in a weird way. We're alumni of the same college. Sure, I know that Microsoft has come out and said that Netflix streaming is an Xbox exclusive, but c'mon. Don't you think the ties of alumni relations are stronger than some piece of paper full of legalese? I do.

iPhone or Android apps would be cool too, but I would much much rather have it on something hooked up to my television. So, yeah, if you could release a PS3 app, that'd be great. Thanks!
Oil-Cooled Xbox Hints at How Microsoft Should Have Engineered the 360

And it runs 10 degrees cooler than before!

(Of course, that heat savings comes at the price of an unspeakable icky factor.)

Then again, if Microsoft had used this simple engineering trick in the design of the 360, just imagine all of the RRoDs that could have been avoided, you know, because no one would have bought the console to begin with.
Microsoft Says No Xbox Blu-ray Drives Period, Says Ballmer Was Talking About PCs

In a revised statement, Microsoft says it has "no plans" to introduce any Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360. But—despite the fact they watched the same video you did—they claim Ballmer was referring to the PC.

Here's the full statement:

Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts this fall when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.

This more clearly worded denial probably should have come last night, when we first asked for comment, instead of the more open-ended one provided at the time. Whatever... easy come, easy go. However, the idea that Ballmer was referring to the PC—which already has Blu-ray drives—rather than simply saying something that wasn't true, that's a little more questionable.

One more time, for posterity, this is what Ballmer said in reply to a question about putting Blu-ray in Xbox:

Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

Ballmer Talks Natal, Says Blu-ray Add-On for Xbox Coming

In the first segment of our exclusive Steve Ballmer interview series, the Microsoft CEO and I talk about Natal, the blurring of console generations, and the surprising assertion that "you'll be able to get" Blu-ray add-on drives for Xbox 360.

When I asked Ballmer about adding Blu-ray to the Xbox, he said:

Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

Though he says it with certitude, the timing of any kind of Blu-ray accessory is unclear. Could he have mispoken? Certainly. However, when I asked Xbox spokespeople about Ballmer's revelation, they responded:

Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment.

Microsoft PR is good — we trust them to say no if they're not making one, and in this case, the best strategy is a "no comment". Which turns out to be a comment.

Of course, his Blu-ray comment may not mean that Microsoft is coming out with an external drive—he may have just been shooting down the idea that the Xbox 360 will ever have an internal Blu-ray drive, by saying that any Blu-ray the Xbox gets would have to be external. On the other hand he did actually say, "You'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."

As you can see in our back-and-forth, Ballmer plays his cards close to the chest, but in my sit-down interview with him, he shared a lot. Prior to the Blu-ray business, Ballmer and I talked about Natal, and the excitement that Matt and Mark experienced when they stepped into the chamber back at E3. When I asked him if Natal was Microsoft's attempt to do away with concept of game console generations (thereby prolonging the life of a given platform indefinitely), Ballmer smiled knowingly and said "We'll see."

Stay tuned for more exciting Ballmer moments (and facial expressions) over the next day, and then the full uncut interview video on Friday. Video by Mike Short

Microsoft Soft-Launching Xbox Live Rewards Program

Only a "select few" have been chosen for what looks to be a trial run of the Xbox rewards program starting October 21, using a criteria that no one has deciphered yet (for instance, our own Jason Chen has a gamerscore of like a bajillion points and he hasn't received an invite—meanwhile, one of our own readers received an invite, and he's just a 4,000-point casual player). We're assuming that, like Club Nintendo, Microsoft will cut the exclusivity to their program eventually. Then again, maybe Microsoft wants their rewards to feel like a just-lucky-to-be-there type of deal indefinitely.

I, for one, couldn't care less about free t-shirts or demos. But give me a radioactive-green Mastercard and I'm sold. [Kotaku]

When You Try to Get a Cheap Xbox 360 HDD, It Can Only End in Tears

I refuse to pay $160 for a 120GB Xbox 360 HDD. But I need one, as my 20GB model is filling up. So I decided to order a cheap one from a shady Hong Kong website. What a mistake.

One of our interns found a sweet deal for a new 120GB HDD for the Xbox 360: $60. Sure, the website seemed a bit shady, and it shipped from Hong Kong, but $60 was a damn good price. So I ordered one.

A few weeks later, I get what appears to be a legit Microsoft Xbox 360 HDD. It comes in a distinctly non-legit box, but everything else looks OK. The problem? It's just the HDD, meaning I can't transfer anything over.

So, of course, I order a transfer cable from eBay. Only $10 this time, yet again from Hong Kong. This time, it doesn't come with the necessary disc to make the transfer.

So now I have a choice: either download an ISO of the transfer disc from any number of shady torrent sites, risking my computer and my Xbox in the process, or eat the $70 I've spent and just buy a legit HDD. At this point, I'm not even sure I trust the HDD I bought to work.

Is this a huge problem? No. Am I whining about something that I should have avoided by doing even a little bit of research first? Yes. Am I still annoyed and frustrated with this? Yes. So let this be a lesson to you: if you think you can outsmart Microsoft into paying less than their obscene HDD prices, you may be wrong.

Facebook, Twitter, Zune and Last.Fm on Xbox Live Hands On: Hrm, That's Interesting

Twitter and Facebook, on your Xbox. It's weird, like people who put ketchup on their eggs.

Tweet Tweet

Twitter actually makes the most natural jump to the Xbox. It's a really basic app, with your timeline, search, and trending topics, but it works, largely because the vertical stream is preserved, even if you can only see four (very legible) tweets at a time, so you won't be power-browsing, TweetDeck style, by any means. It's slow, and typing's reeeeeeeally frustrating, like having your eyeballs poked out one pinprick at a time, if you don't have the chatpad (part of thinks this entire update is all a giant conspiracy to sell more Xbox 360 chatpads). Updates can sometimes take forever to hit your Twitter stream, too. Still, it's pretty, and works the best of the new apps.

Facebookin'

Facebook uses the standard Xbox tile UI instead of rolling its interface, like Twitter did. Which is disorienting (and disappointing), since you're browsing through a stream horizontally, one choppily-animated tile at a time. Why is the tile-sliding animation so terrible on a monster console like the Xbox 360? We don't know. Like Twitter, it's basic—focused on Newsfeeds. Your groups are ported over, so you can browse their newsfeeds individually, but you literally have to browse one post at a time, which is agonizing, making you far less inclined to comment on updates.

The interface works much better, and feels way more natural, with photo albums. What's interesting is that, at least in the preview, your friends have to link their Xbox Live and Facebook accounts together themselves in order to show up in the "Xbox Live Friends on Facebook" (and vice versa) pages—you can't manually go in and link Jason Chen's accounts so you'll see them together in your app. That might change though, with the final rollout. (Here's some video of it, from Kotaku.)

Last.fm

This would be would be waaaaaay better if it could play in the background. It can't. Meaning once you link your accounts and all of you stations are nicely and automatically ported over, to listen to Last.fm, you just have to sit there and leave it running, with band pictures floating up to your screen every once in a while. Lame. (You can see it in action on Kotaku.)

Zune Video Marketplace

Not a whole lot to write home about yet besides 1080p streams—it's a video store on Xbox, with movies for rent or purchase, TV shows, trailers—but Zune Video is here and it, um, works. You browse through the standard Xbox interface, like Netflix. We didn't get a chance to use the possible killer feature—Party mode, where you can watch stuff with your friends—yet, but if anything makes the Zune video store really stand out, that could be it. Previews, alas, didn't come in at 1080p, even over FiOS, which clearly has the bandwidth to deliver.

All in all, the new apps, they're interesting, they add something, but with the exception of Zune Video Marketplace, aren't critical. At least for now.

Insanity: Xbox 360 'Repaired' 3 Times, Returns Each Time With Red Ring

Andy Phifer, like many of us, faced a glowing red ring on his nonfunctional Xbox 360. Facing an RRoD warranty technicality, he sent Microsoft $100 to make necessary repairs. Things didn't go so well. Here's his story: UPDATE

I'm sure you get stories like this all the time, and I'm sure the news is old (Xbox 360s break, they suck, haha), but this isn't so much a story about an Xbox being broken as it is a story about Xbox support failing to repair and identify the problem after a few months and three repairs. I can't get anyone at Microsoft to even apologize for them messing up over and over time and time again, so I thought I'd take to the internet to see if anyone wants to write about a true Xbox Support horror story.

I'm 25 years old, work in a professional office building as a newspaper designer, am married, have a son and am not very dumb.

Xbox got four red lights back in July. My Xbox is still under warranty, but warranty doesn't cover four red lights. I happily send them $100. [Ed note: 4 red lights is code for a missing AV cable, but can be caused by other issues. 3 red lights is the famous RRoD and is covered by the warranty.]

Four weeks after putting in the repair order, the Xbox was sent back fixed. It is now August. It took four weeks for the repair to complete in part because of shipping problems, including five boxes being delivered to my door and two instances of undeliverable addresses. Really, the repair only took a week. Getting the correct box to my house took three weeks.

Three weeks after I got it back, on August 27, I got three red lights about ten minutes away from beating Shadow Complex with 100% items found.

About 2 weeks after repair was ordered, Xbox was returned to me – three red lights remained.
About 2 weeks after repair was ordered, Xbox was returned to me – three red lights remained.
About 2 weeks after repair was ordered, Xbox was returned to me – three red lights remained.
(that's not a typo. I sent it in three times, and it was sent back still broken three times)

It is now October. I took to Twitter to rage about Microsoft and a friend asked me if I checked the lights on the power supply. No person at any point in this repair process going all the way back to July has ever asked me or told me or hinted about or mentioned the light on the power supply indicating the power supply might be faulty. I checked it, and the power supply was orange. I'd bet the very first time I got the three red lights, this might've been the problem. Why no one in the process, after the Xbox came back to me "unrepaired," asked me to check the power supply I do not know.

After much convincing, a new power supply was ordered sent to me by Microsoft. It arrived after a week. The male power supply didn't fit into my female Xbox port. Apparently, Xbox has used a few different kinds of power supplies over the years.

Today, October 7, the new power supply has been ordered and might arrive in 2-3 weeks (they have to process the request, 7 days they say, and then ship it, 5 days. Add weekends off and time to deliver, and it'll be 2-3 weeks).

So after all that, I've been able to play my 360 for about three weeks total since July... Am I at fault? Maybe 1% of this is my fault – I could've looked online for more reasons the three red lights might happen, at which point I would've found out about the power supply problem… but still, that's no excuse, because it isn't my friends job to fix my console, it is Microsoft's job, and they have failed.

Andy Phifer
Houston, Texas

I don't think anyone can blame Andy for not self-diagnosing his Xbox issue. Anyone who's dealt with any sort of technical support before knows that nothing gets the operator riled up more than a valid self-diagnosis. These calls are heavily scripted to cater to the lowest common denominator.

But when that script clearly can't diagnose a common problem (more than once) and the customer is punished for months because of it, I mean, come on. Given Microsoft's apparent fundamental troubleshooting flaws at work in this story, we have a tough time believing that there's only one "Andy" out there. [Image]

UPDATE: Looks like Microsoft stepped up to the plate to take care of Andy. Since his story hit the web, he's received tech support call with the full white glove treatment.

How much is Project Natal going to cost? Microsoft's still working it out, but Robbie Bach says at the very green roundtable I'm sitting at that it'll follow a price curve "like anything else," meaning, in English, it'll start at a more expensive point and get cheaper as it goes on. In other words, Microsoft's thinking about it more as a 32X-type add-on versus some tack-on motion controller.

So, I won't be surprised if it's $150, or even more, honestly.

This No-Name HTPC Remote Has a Keyboard, Can Work With Game Consoles?

If this $40 remote actually does what it says it does, then it might be one of the most useful HTPC remotes out there. It looks like a Motorola Q, but communicates over RF to its USB receiver.

Once your signals hit the receiver, you can support Windows, Linux, Mac or Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii (supposedly). Hard to tell whether or not it can actually do all of these things, since the website looks like one a kid would make for his dad's business over the summer between Jr. High and High School, so we'll have to see for ourselves to be sure.
Courier Tablet Runs Windows 7, Hardware Made By Microsoft

More details on Courier, courtesy of Mary Jo Foley: Most interestingly, her sources say it runs Windows 7 underneath, the same way the Surface runs on top of Vista, and that Microsoft will actually make the tablet hardware.

There've been questions as to whether Courier is a software platform—meaning another manufacturer would make the actual hardware—or whether Microsoft will pull a Zune/Xbox 360. Mary Jo's sources say it's the latter (which makes sense, given that it's supposedly J. Allard's baby). But, Courier did actually start life as a "as a software idea on how one would really build OneNote from scratch if you could for the Tablet form factor. That then morphed into building a tablet."

So far, they're aiming for a "mid-2010" delivery, since it's further along than a Microsoft Research project, but not quite in the commercial pipe yet. Which puts it right in the Apple tablet's purported path. Oh, 2010 is going to rock. [ZDNet]

Life-Size Gears of War Lancer Is Sure to Get Some Kid Expelled

This Gears of War replica Lancer doesn't fire real bullets, and it's lacking the motor components to saw someone in half. But damn does it look deadly.

Packing a weight of 15 pounds and a full-sized length of over three feet, the Lancer has been crafted out of polystone before getting a hand-painted finish. And if you'd like to actually own this work of art, you can preorder the Lancer now for $950.

It'll ship in February, or just in time to destroy any intimate relationships you may have before Valentine's Day.
It's a little more expensive at $35 (the controller is $10 extra), but that's what you get for quality of this caliber.
