Sony Ultra-Thin KLV-40ZX1M and 240Hz KDL-52XBR7 LCD HDTVs Getting Official US Release

Just like we spied earlier today, Sony's two baddest IFA LCD TVs—the 9.9mm-thin KLV-40ZX1M LCD (above) and the 200Hz Motionflow Z4500 (below, known as the KDL-52XBR7 at 240Hz here in the US, due to our 30fps broadcasts vs. Europe's 25fps)—are both getting an official US rollout here at CEDIA. Jesus got a chance to fondle 'em in Berlin last week where US details were slim, but both sets will be shipping stateside in December. Both have whole-house WHDI wireless HD streaming built-in from Amimon. No official pricing on either, but they'll be top-end, for sure (rumored to be $4,500 for the ZX1). Full release follows: More »

Sony Hosts XBR8 LED LCD vs. Plasma Shootout (You'll Never Guess Who Wins)

Sony celebrated the launch of its XBR8 tricolor-LED-backlit LCD TV lineup with a Pioneer-style darkened-room shoot-out. The 55" XBR8 was pitted against an unnamed popular plasma set. What you see above is the LCD on the left, and the plasma on the right. But wait, we thought plasmas always had the upper hand when it comes to non-crushed black levels! More »

Sony's Big Bravia XBR6, XBR7, XBR8 LCDs (And the XBR8 Has LEDs!)

Sony is having a block party with its top-end Bravia LCD line today—two entirely new series, XBR7 and XBR8, and updates to XBR6. At CES, we asked, "Where are the big Sony TVs?" Here they are. XBR8 brings features from its obscenely ridiculous $33,000 70-inch XBR3 down to more accessible 46 and 55 inch sets—namely tri-color Triluminos LED backlighting, which is supposed to deliver decently deep blacks. Also on tap is 120Hz Motionflow and Bravia Engine Pro 2 processing jujitsu. More »

First Review of the Sony's Next Gen XBR4 HDTV LCD (Verdict: Best) Sony's XBR4, the 10-bit, , 24-frame compatible, 120Hz follow up to the XBR3, was announced a few weeks ago, but Gary Merson has the first review. He says its the best HD LCD so far, with some caveats.

Sony's New XBR5 XBR4, and W Series LCD HDTVs

Sony's finally upgrading my beloved Sony XBR3 LCD, so gorgeous, it was chosen as the display of choice by Playstation for the PS3 launch, and even Apple for their Apple TV demos. The new LCDs are 1080p, running a full 1920 by 1080 res, with 10-bit panels that can resolve color 64 times that of 8 bit panels. More »

Choose Your Own Color Frames For Sony LCD and Rear-Projection TVs

To satisfy the interior decorator in all of us, Sony has continued its drive for "personalization" of TVs. That means interchangeable color faceplates available for two of the new lines, the 50" to 60" A3000 SXRD rear-projection sets ($3000 to $3500) and the 40" to 46" XBR4 ($3,000 to $4,800). More »

Sony's New 70" SXRD Rear Projection: It's Thin, It's Floaty, It's Smooth

Even though Sony's big push is LCD, the flagship of the show was actually not a flat panel at all, but the 70" rear-projection SXRD model KDS-Z70XBR5. It's a freakin' amazing 40% slimmer than last year's, and though it weighs 200 lbs, you can imaging hanging it on, or very close to, your wall. Best of all, it costs $6,000, far less than flat panels that come close to its size. More »

Sony Punches Up its Bravia Line with Slimmer Microdisplays and New LCDs

Sony lifted the curtain on its new line of Bravia TVs Wednesday night introducing 5 new slimmer SXRDs alongside 9 new LCDs. On the microdispay side, the new TVs shed some fat (they're 40% thinner than previous models) and range in size from 50 inches to 70 with features like MotionFlow 120Hz (which keeps moving images clean when set on moving backgrounds) and Photo Mode (which smoothens out your digital camera's pictures when viewing them on your TV). And lots of these sets have that PS3 like cross media bar styled menus. The LCDs (which include the XBR4 and XBR5 series) vary from 40 inches to 52. Full line up after the jump. More »

Sony's $33k 70-inch LCD with x.v.Color

If you ever had plans to rob a bank, now would be a good time. Sony today rolled out its new 70-inch Bravia KDL-70XBR3. It's the company's first 70-inch LCD to carry Sony's new x.v.Color technology. Sony claims the new technology gives you better image quality by combining 1080p resolution with Motionflow 120Hz technology with motion compensation. In other words, goodbye blurry images. The big catch: it'll cost you $33k when it comes out next month. Now where was that bank? More »

The PS3's Fav HDTV: The KDL-40XBR3 LCD Gallery and Review

When Sony had its big PS3 press day a few months ago, the world's elite gaming journalists stopped bashing the console long enough to write about how stunning the PS3's visuals were in person. But, I'd just seen it and I wasn't blown away. The difference between my experience and that the others had? I saw my demos on a good, but not great LCD. So I reasoned that the PS3's high praise was in part due to the monitors Sony paired the PS3 with. More »

Best LCD Ever: Why Sony's 40-Inch Bravia TV Makes Rivals Pee Pants

What HiFi Sound and Vision put eight LCD TVs in the very sweet 40-ish-inch range to come out with one winner: The Sony KDL40W2000. The TV ranked highest because it has a true HD 1920 by 1080 resolution, the sharpest picture, best color, great contrast, and a nice case. It also had the best sound, twin HDMI inputs, and an analog and a freeview tuner. All for 2000 sterling pounds. Pounds? Freeview? Yes, the TV is UK bound, and not available here. Awww.

But we tracked down the US equivalent out of Sony's retardedly confusing product line.
Actually, its cheaper. You want this TV. We give you the...

Sony Adds Two Fancy 1080p 52-inchers to Top of Bravia LCD Line

Sony showed the biggest Bravia LCD TVs yet at CEDIA today, a couple of 52-inch 1920x1080 (1080p) panels with HDMI inputs. The KDL-52XBR2 has a piano black finish while the KDL-52XBR3 looks more like aircraft silver. We've seen a few of the earlier 1080p Bravia LCDs, and it's hard to imagine how they would improve them, but Sony keeps on trying, adding its Advanced Contrast Enhancer which it claims can deliver a contrast ratio of 7000:1. That might fix the biggest problem with LCDs: their black levels aren't quite black enough. More »

IOData LCD-TV241XBR 24-Inch LCD TV

We've never known IOData for making TVs—mostly peripherals such as the USB USB and the EasyDisk. But the their new LCD-TV241XBR has full HD resolution at 1920x1200, so who are we to say what they can't do? More »

Sony Resuscitates CRTs with 34-Inch XBR970 HD Model

Reports of the death of the lowly CRT have been greatly exaggerated, and Sony asserted that point with the introduction of a line of FD Trinitron WEGA direct-view televisions—one of them HD, the rest not. Sony must believe there are still people who want to buy standard-definition TVs, so it answers that perceived need with the 36-inch KD-36FS170, 32-inch KV-32FS170 and 27-inch KV27FS170. They all use that old-skool 4:3 aspect ratio and are sticking with that 480i resolution no matter what you say. More »
