I thought MS sold a million Zunes a while ago?
It's about time. What's it been, a year now?
REALLY?! you sure this isn't just another false alarm?
Wow, they're getting up into Mac territory, in terms of marketshare...
No it's really a million and I think Zune has been out for about 7 months. Lol It sold more than the iPod did at this mark.
And Rcarydon don't you mean iPod territory?
isn't the iPod over 100 million?
how is that close?
@Tay:
iPod's been out for 5 years. Were only at 7 months and are already in your million territory
cursemastreo:
comparing ipod and zune sales in their respective first 8 months is meaningless. the ipod was mac only, more expensive, and the portable digital music industry was wayyyyy less mature than it is now.
that being said, i make official motion to stop calling it "selling" zunes and clarify it as "shipping" zunes im sure the folks at sony will be able to explain the difference
"Lol It sold more than the iPod did at this mark."
You're comparing the iPod's situation to that of the Zune?
Most people didn't know what the hell an MP3 player was when the iPod was announced.
@Marty_MacFly:
Exactly, which is why Zune has the advantage.
Wow, I had no idea that many people worked for Microsoft.
Yeah, and in a million different color schemes...
So far I've seen one person at an airport enjoying the "social". I fly a lot and white headphones outnumber all others. Not that I care, use whatever works for you.
@infmom:
Don't hate.
@infmom:
Stop hatin'
You must be out of your mind if you think the zune has the advantage. I have only seen one, which turned out to be made of paper wrapped around a sponge as a joke.
sold a million Zunes? to who? who knows someone who owns a Zune?
there's a big difference in how many Zunes Microsoft has sold to retailers (stores, websites, catalogs etc) versus how many have actually been bought by consumers at those outlets.
I have a feeling that a good percentage of the 1-million Zunes out there are still living on store shelves and warehouses with no place to go. Especially those snazzy brown ones. And cursemaster0, are you really trying to compare Zune to iPod? really? for real?
@chemicalfish:
Technically it does because everyone knows what an MP3 player is. I happen to know many people who don't work for microsoft and who own macs and PCs that have Zunes. Plus neither company cares, they just want their return.
Most people didn't know what an iPhone was when Zune was announced.
@qbang:
There in 7 editions. And yes I'm compairing a Zune to an iPod, they do just about the exact same thing. And no matter how much fanboys like you go crazy of some healthy competition this product will contenue to sell. Heck, the second gen of this from what I've heard should beat any iPod out there.
Wasn't it something like 700,000 iphones sold their first weekend? If the iphone had beaten the zune to the 1million mark, the zune team would probably have needed therapy.
@Cursemaster0: I still don't understand how the Zune is in iPod territory. The iPod is 99 Million units ahead, now granted it took a 5 year head start, but at the rate that Microsoft is selling Zunes, they would only be at about 10 million in five years... who knows what the iPod will be at by that point. Now you can say that the Zune started off on a better pace then the iPod did, but remember no one had a clue what an iPod or even an MP3 player was when the iPod came out... but as for the Zune, people have been waiting for Miscosofts MP3 player for a long time, it had Hype, people knew what it was way before it came out...
@Marty_MacFly:
Dude, there were portable CD players before the iPod... and the latest ones before they died to the solid state revolution did have MP3 players built in so you could record 11 hrs of music in 1 CD.
What do you mean people did not know what an MP3 player was?
That's why the iPod was so succesful... you did not have to carry CD's with MP3 on them either....
@aec007:
The iPod barely sold 400,000 in it's first year.
@Tay:
Same with the iPhone...
Anyways after a while the sales will spike just like with the iPod.
The iPod was mac only.
Zune sales numbers suck, no matter how you look at it.
@Cursemaster0:
I am completely confident that come september 25, everyone will need to buy the halo3 edition zune to go along with their halo3 edition 360s that everyone has been waiting for. Yeah, thats how they'll catch up.
A million Zunes in a year, a million iPhones in a week. I doubt Apple feels threatened.
@Cursemaster0: "Heck, the second gen of this from what I've heard should beat any iPod out there."
Yeah, show me a Zune that can make phone calls and go online. I'd actually welcome healthy competition if it existed because that would hopefully create more competitive pricing.
dose that me dissolusioned zune owners (alot like me) will finaly get some decent firmware/software updates??
....hahahahahahahaha
that mean** damn typo's
@johnnyrandom: Hahaha
This guy reminds me of Greg Packer...
I think Giz needs a photoshop contest with this dude.
I think they sold a million Zunes faster than Sony sold a million PS3's in Japan.
just make sure you post at the landmark "People Getting Jacked For Zunes" time. that's when you've made it...
But people seem to forget that the ipod did not take off until it was released for the pc. Also, how much market share did apple hold in computers when the ipod was released solely for the mac? Its very hard to compare these two devices fairly, so my question is why bother?
@pupaboy:
PS3 has NO games. But the zune is not limited in what music it can have, it just sucks.
I agree with JHONNYRANDOM. Microsoft needs a lot of work on their digital media players to beat the Apple in the whole IPOD industry.
The next iPod, which will be based on the iPhone, will blow away anything MS can copy. MS tends to be a generation or so behind Apple so expect the next Zune to be similar to the 5G iPod. Even MS admitted they are "behind the game" in the DAP market. Maybe they should have mentioned that they are also "behind the times" as well.
(posted from my iPhone)
400,000 ipods, being mac only, was huge, given the marketshare. you can't sell an mp3 player to people who can't use them. the proportion of mac owners to buy 1st gen ipods, comparing apple marketshare at the time (5%?) to the pc marketshare now (92%) means that in order for microsoft to sell the same proportion of mp3 players to THOSE WHO CAN USE THEM, they would have to sell 7.36 million zunes in the first year
statistics are fun, even if they dont really mean anything : )
@Shabbis: only one generation behind? Feels more like 2-3.
(replies from my iPhone)
a post about the zune and mac fanboys instinctively feel threatened and storm in. i hope they sell a million more zunes. competition is good. anything to push apple into releasing the multitouch widescreen video ipod that we all know is coming is good news.
The Zune is an excellent DAP that is less feature-rich than the iPod but has a more organic interface and, IMO, better navigation features.
Shipping over a million in eight months isn't bad at all. Sure, it's nowhere near the iPod's market share. But...why does that matter? The iPod's the ubiquitous, entrenched product. NO product could knock the iPod off its perch in one fell swoop -- even if the Zune had every feature of the iPod and then some and a 100% DRM-free music store with songs cheaper than iTunes, the iPod would still ride its brand momentum for months.
The 1st-gen Zune is a perfectly decent foot-in-the-door product, and it really makes me laugh to see how much knee-jerk flak it takes from iPod fans.
@nutbastard: that is a fun statistic :D but you are forgetting that statistically mac owners have more money to toss around and are into the younger music scene than the 50 year old businessman. i hope the sell a million more zunes. anything to push apple into releasing the multitouch widescreen video ipod we all know is coming is good news.
I bought a zune just to stand out from the rest of you sheeple. I had an ipod for a long time and my girlfriend has an ipod video, and I can honestly say that I preffer the Zune.
ooooh my god why do people keep using the "ipod was mac only"? ZUNE IS MICROSOFT ONLY!! YOU CANT USE IT IF YOU OWN A MAC!!
so all those fanboys who would have us believe that mac is taking over, either they are wrong or people are giving up mac to use zune....mwhaahahahaha
and by the way, i dunno where all you are, but where i am i honestly see people using zunes on a daily basis. and yes i am a proud owner, and im not the "person on a daily basis"
just buy both,smash um,the one the takes more hammer swings wins and buy that one again!
Maybe they would have sold 5 million if the Zune supported DIVX. I would have bought one.
Instead I got an Archos, which supports DIVX.
This is my favorite Gizmodo post.
I have Only Seen two people With a ZUNE and I travel a lot within the Constraints of New York state.I plan on Buying one within the next few months but I dont think the ZUNE will be a Pop a The iPod has been.Unless they Fix the Installation Problems add a Few Features and Stop that stupid DRM rubbish.I mean...What the hell are ZUNEtunes?*rhetorical Question*
They reason they say "Ipod was Mac Only" is because it was. The *ONLY* reason it was able to catch on was because they used the MS Platform to sell them. Its not the first time they have used MS to help them out. They shill microsoft as a selling point for their desktops (you can run both OSX and XP). They asked for help years ago and MS bailed them out by announcing partnerships. Then since they don't have a decent word processor or spreadsheet or productivity application they, again, turned to Microsoft to get some Apps for the Mac platform. Sure, you can make a 'cool mash up' or use a webcam and take funny pictures...But If it weren't for Microsoft - Apple would be a long forgotten rotten core.
I have Only Seen two people With a ZUNE and I travel a lot within the Constraints of New York state.I plan on Buying one within the next few months but I dont think the ZUNE will be as Popular a The iPod has been.Unless they Fix the Installation Problems add a Few Features and Stop that stupid DRM rubbish.I mean...What the hell are ZUNEtunes?*rhetorical Question*
@mwalker05:
Well, ok, that's not a bad argument... except a lot of mac owners are college students who bought the thing with scholarship/loan money. (not a lot of wiggle room for gadgets) and you could argue the old people dont dig this stuff, but you'd have to believe that more than half of young computer owners own macs for it to hold water. there are many more young pc owners than mac owners. the mac marketshare for 18-25 YOs is probably at least 3 times what the general mac share is, but thats still only like 20%. and yet young pc owners tend to buy ipods.
before i get labeled here, i do NOT own an ipod, nor do i want one. maybe if a widescreen, touch screen, wifi enabled ipod came out, i'd want one, but i still wouldn't buy one. i dont recomend ANY hard-disc based players to ANYBODY. after lots of research, i still stand by the sansa e280. I knock the zune because i've never seen one used, and because its creation was such a lame move, like, fuck, MS, can't you actually CREATE something? something NEW? or maybe just something better?
:O 1 million!!! Oh noes. Only 49 million more to go to sell half as much as the ipod! Things are looking pretty grim for the ipod...
@targatop: um i have white headphones, and a zune
Initial iPhone sales is a better comparison than Zune vs. first iPod, as, like the Zune, the iPhone is selling into an established market.
So, 30 days vs. what? Seven months?
