The new Zune's just slightly bigger than the iPod classic, measuring about 5mm taler and 2mm thicker. It's also slightly thinner than the 30GB Zune, with 3mm height, 1mm width and 2mm depth separating the two. When you're comparing 80GB to 80GB, the size different doesnt' seem like it's going to be enough to make any sort of meaningful difference.
But when you're comparing the Flash Zune vs. the iPod Nano, things get a little tricky. The Nano's now fat, which means it's shorter but wider than the Zune, so it's kind of weird. But if you look at the iPod Nano 2G vs. the new Flash Zunes, it's almost exactly the same size. However, Microsoft's player still comes up a little fatter, wider, and thicker. [Sizeasy]

The iPod franchise has been dealt a serious blow. let us see how it all plays out.
I mean who would seriously consider an iPod when the new Zunes are sooo much sexier...
@kibets:
I bet Steve is just quaking in his turtle neck... NOT.
Serious blow my @rse!
MS are still over two years behind, and millions of iPods of course.
Glossy colors Vs touchscreen & full browser....
Mmmmm, I guess that's a tough call for princess pixie pants...
Hmm.. possible competition, for once...
LOL, its a good thing the new ipod nano's aren't self conscious, lining them up next to the other players just makes it seem fat...
and Iphoney, I think glossy colors are more than enough...I mean sure touch screen and browser are nice, when they work...and you're not forced into a contract with one company, who uses the edge network...or worried that the firmware updates are gonna cause you problems becuase you actually want your device to do better things...or that whole, I'm freaking out that my screen will crack in my pocket or get horribly smudged...but yeah other than that, I'd want a touchscreen and browser... oh wait I have a laptop for that...what was I talking about again?
Does it work with a Mac? Is it the same price per GB? No? Then count me out.
I dont think there is much point comparing the zune 80 to an ipod touch. To the classic, definitely, but the touch is something entierly different. 1/5th of the storage, but all touchscreen and with wifi and a browser. I don't see anyone comparing a zune to an archos 605, which is a ton more similar to an ipod touch than a zune is. We don't need to compare every single pmp that comes out to the rainbow of ipod flavors, especialy the apples flavored ones to the orange flavored ones. Pssh. Koolaid drinkin fanboys and antifanboys.
@leadster618: oh i forgot about those laptops that fit in pockets. and the nano maybe wider now but it's still absolutely tiny and with a bigger screen to boot.
that said, these are good competition for the ipod...finally. i like the media center integration. apple definitely loses on that point, especially once nbc content is gone from the itunes store.
a screen sizemodo maybe?
Ditto.
@Johnny Chimpo:
Agreed -- that, for me, is the deciding factor in what-to-buy-next...
If the Zune's UI is less laggy than the iPod classic, then hopefully MS can capitalize on an Apple misstep.
OSX on an iPod is a great concept, but the execution isn't there on the classic.
Additionally, while I don't like the squared circle or Mickey Ear button layout on the Zune, I miss the white face of iPod. The silver face just isn't the same.
However, the debate between the two is all academic for me because the Zune is not Mac compatible.
/a disappointed classic owner.
@iPhoney: NERDFIGHT!!!
@omg-ponies: do you think the average person is going to notice UI lag before purchase? This isn't about build quality or features but more importantly brand recognition, sure Microsoft is an established brand, but iPod is sinonomous (mis-spelled but you know what I mean, it's 8:00 am) with music and portable media. Microsoft has a horrible track record with hardware, that's what people look at.
@Johnny Chimpo:
Who wants a Screen Sizemodo?
Me 2.
@ LEADSTER618
You're talking about the iPhone, this comparison is against the iPod Touch which neither has edge or tie you down to any contract.
@iPhoney: I don't get why you see the need to compare all of the Zune lineup to the Touch. That's like comparing the GB Micro to the PSP. The Micro came out later, but it wasn't meant as a direct competition to the top of the line. If anything, it's to be compared to similar products. 80gig to 80 gig.
@Johnny Chimpo:
@ANoel:
You can Sizemodo your cock*, 3D comparisons and all, just like Giz. I believe they use [www.sizeasy.com] , graphics and all. I may be wrong, but it's very similar and so much fun!
* Your cock/s must be a rectangular prism for this to work
