Rumor: Zune Flash and Zune 2.0 on June 1st, Zune Track Purchases over WiFi

These photos claim to show a first-gen Zune running a firmware 2.14 that can purchase and download tracks over Wi-Fi with Microsoft points. They come from the same friendly Zune source that sent us the first photos of Zune 2.0 that some readers thought were Photoshopped. I can't tell if this is merely a first-gen Zune showing just an image of a firmware/download screen, or the true thing. What do you think?

The same email the photos came in says that the Flash and Zune 2 will be announced within the month. The only lead I have to kinda confirm this is a report sent to me of a conversation between an unnamed high ranking Microsoft employee to our other source a month ago, with the quote, "if you like Zune, you'll love us on June 1st".

But click on for another photo, and part of the email exchange I had revealing the June 1 date. But remember, this is all rumor.

Add that to the private preview of the Zune Flash and 2.0 that went on this week, as reported by friends at iLounge, and you can tell that people are hungry for some revision.

Can anyone who went to Monday's event at least tell us if the Zune's hardware is even going to look anything like the Zune 1? This ain't no gigabeat, remember? Good lord, I hope they lose the fake scrollwheel and replace it with a proper crosspad. Source the NES ones, you'll get fans that way.

...she mentions she is at work and then i ask where she works, she openly says that she she works for Microsoft and we just started talking about the zune and we even talked about the new colors coming out, then she asks me how i like it, and even asked me what i would like to see different about it, i told her, and she replied with, "well if you like
that then you're going to love June 1st." i kinda just laugh and asked why, she replied with, Microsoft has some "BIG" plans for that day, she wouldn't go into too much detail with me about it other than it was closely related with the zune and that it is supposed to be "BIG" i wasn't able to resolve her reason for calling today, and she had a meeting to go to she said it was actually about advertisements for whatever it was that they had brewing up

Being able to purchase over WiFi will finally give the Zune a leg up. The WiFi sharing was a complete wank with its cruddy 3x3 system. But what I want to know is, what if the hotspot is password encrypted? Will it also require search n' peck typing through the D-Pad?

  • cool

  • Stop toying with my emotions!!!

Bad ass iPod patents and new Zune info? When will the torment stop?

Oh yeah, on June 1st...no need for excitement until I see a clear photo. Get back to me there Bri, or I'll just wait with bated-breath as the consumer-whore they want me to be.

  • Sorry but I really think that this is another fake, it just doesn't make sense why everything is out of focus except the "beta2.1.4". And also I really don't think this source is to be trusted because those other pics of the "zune2.0" were so obviously photoshopped it's not even funny and as if ms would be as stupid to make the 2nd gen zune identical to the first except even bigger!!?? Anyway toshiba will no longer be making the zune's after the 1st gen because ms are opening their own factory beside the xbox one in China. Go to zunescene.com to check that out if you don't believe me.

  • This is sweet, I just hope ZV2 have a better design and a lot thinner.
I still love my brown one though.

  • I think they are just running the new OS on the old zune, wouldn't be wise to show the new zune.

  • So since the Apple patent should we predict a delay in Zune 2.0 or a SOON to be released after Z2.0, Zune 3.0?

  • I heard Microsoft has apparently paid $1.6 trillion to lobby the United Nations to change the English name of the 6th month of the year from June to Zune, with a UN vote timed to be announced simultaneously with the new hardware.

  • First it is May 1st, now June 1st... I can hardly stand it.

    Zune Zune Zune

What new colors did she talk about?

  • Will it features hundreds of pop up windows, "wizards", driver isues and viruses like microsofts other shitty products? yea, it's an ipod killer like fucking hillary clinton is honest...

    @rc28,

The 2.1.4 beta looks slightly askew to me too. It almost appears to be at a different angle from the rest of the blurry text. but maybe it's just a trick of the mind.

If Toshiba stops making the Zune, who's going to fill in this position?

Now were talking. Buying songs over wifi is the way to do it.

  • Wow. This looks awesome. But I would wait to hear it from horse's mouth.

I am not sure if a Zune can download stuff from a hotspot.

Does anyone know if the zune is 802.11a/b/g compliant? If so, why hasnt anyone managed to hack or even sense on a router?

Does the Zune have enough power to handle IP's DHCP etc?

The first logical step if all this were true would be to download music from PC wireless, than through a hotspot.

Also someone asked rightly , what if the hotspot is encrypted??

  • The pics look like a fake.

I wont loose my sleep over June 1st !!

Could well be another private party preview.

2.1.4 Beta is looking like a photoshop job. A good one.

  • @kaiser

All I know is that it will be the same chinese company that is making the xbox elite, there were even confirmed satellite pics on google earth of the new zune factory being built right beside the xbox one a few months ago. All of this was said by a ms employee to zunescene.com so go to that site to see the full story. The fact that Toshiba will not be making any more zunes makes it further unbelievable that zune2.0 will look practically identical to the 1st gen

  • @rc28

I am a very regular vistor of zunescene.com and the story about the factory is nothing more than a RUMOR. When were those photos taken? You don't know. Was the source reliable? You don't know. Is it confirmed anywhere that the other building in, in fact, the Xbox 360 building? I don't think so.

So sorry buddy, but rumors don't confirm rumors, so don't base an argument on such.

  • @Holden
Umm, someone on zuneinsider asked Cesar himself about that rumor and he admitted about the new factory- what reason would he have to deny it, it's only a factory after all! Anyway it was said near the launch by ms that toshiba would only be making V1 of zune. They partnered with toshiba in the first place only because the they wanted to get zune out as quickly as possible and the best way to do this was get toshibca to do it as the shell of their gigabeat is used to make zune so they didn't have to start from scratch with developing a completely new assembly line for it.

  • From: BLOG.WIRED.COM: TRACKBACK at 02:03 PM on 05/10/07

Gizmodo has some horrible grainy photos up that suggest Zune's 2.14 firmware revision will include a WiFi-enabled music store.

  • I believe it! I'm going to be the first one to get a flash based Zune when it comes out on Zune 1st!!!

  • I'll take a Zune Generation 2 in brown, but please lose the green double shot. Green + brown doesn't go well. But I would totally love the brown without the green.

  • Being able to purchase over wifi would be really nice... hope this pans out. I'm not planning on buying a zune, but competition for the iPod is a very good thing.

  • I'm pretty sure it's a fake. Look at the first picture. You can see St. Jimmy, in a straight line, and to the left the 2.1.4, on a different angle than the first one. I'm pretty sure Microsoft wouldn't mess up their own text line-up.

  • you got to remember that "beta" firmwares arent perfect, and for use by the zune developers, so there is no need for perfect straight text
