If You Love Sitting on Stairs, This Is the Sofa For You

Everyone seems to sit on the stairs at parties—so why not embrace the fact with your furniture? That's exactly what Canadian designer Geof Ramsay has done with his Steps bench.

Ramsay's clearly been to many a house party, where he's noticed people gravitate towards the stairs to take a seat. He explained to Dezeen:

"For as long as the staircase has been used, it has also been a form of seating. The raised right angle of the step lends itself to form a natural seat-like structure... By re-conceptualizing objects that were originally designed for one purpose, we find alternate or multiple uses."

Indeed, that's exactly what he's done here. His three-tiered Steps bench is constructed from maple plywood boards. It features deep treads and short risers, making it, y'know, actually practical, and a seat back slots into a groove of the second tread to turn it into a proper place to lean back. Unlike most sets of stairs, the bench also comes with upholstered cushions.

The bench is manufactured in Halifax, Canada, and available is made-to-order from Geof Ramsay Design Studio. Perfect for you next party at home. [Geof Ramsay via Dezeen]
