Leonard Nimrod commented on iPhone SDK Beta 5 Now Up: Bug Fixes, Updated OS Support @Paradise: The only issue is with plugins, but as the article states most are JS and may be allowed. Still, plugins aside, Mozilla could actually build in a version of Flash 9 into the browser for full flash support, but it would have to be in the app itself to be allowed.

The rules seem to only be preventing apps from running in the background, calling other apps, and doing things naughty things (like running torrents and making VoIP calls over the cell carrier's data network).

Because it's not coming out June 9th. Last year AT&T did the same thing for the dates June 15th to July 15th, with the releaae date of June 29th. This year it's looking like the release date will be Friday June 27th @ 5pm.

Apple will do very well, but other companies have a loyal fan base and they won't rip into their smartphone marketshare too badly. I think we'll find that many iPhone buyers are new to the smartphone market. Nokia will reign supreme in the EU for at a couple years.

Leonard Nimrod commented on Zune 2.5 Update Brings TV Shows, More Social Networking, Improved Software Features @Kaiser-Machead: You nailed it, Kaiser. It's a power play, not the money at this point... but the end game is about money.

With iTS being the dominate force NBC had no control over pricing. They may be getting less with the Zune Marketplace but if it upsets the iTS dominance that ushers in the content providers controlling the market then it was worth it.

The thing is we know that it won't work and this shows that Hulu probably isn't working out NBC like they hoped. The fact is, all they've done is lost a source of income and pissed off a lot of customers.

It's a different world and they failed to change (again) and now have lost even more control by trying to force the entertainment world into an antiquated business model.

Leonard Nimrod commented on Stealth Safari Update for Windows Was Super Effective, Tripled Marketshare @Krutch: I love QT on Mac but hate it on Windows.

@StarChaser Tyger: But you aren't forced. It's a check box like all the other installs that "recommend" apps but pre-check the box. Once installed it won't auto-launch and run in the background so it's not malware.

I just think to much is being made out of this. I don't like that Apple pre-checked the box, but I don't like when all the other installed do it either. I just think we need to look at it objectively.

Leonard Nimrod commented on Stealth Safari Update for Windows Was Super Effective, Tripled Marketshare @Krutch: If you installed it you choose to install it. Nothing is done automatically. Just like when you install other software and they suggest other software, including Firefox, by pre-checking the box and having you check Next or Install. The same thing. Just like any other non-malware app it doesn't autostart or run background processes. The only harm it does is take up about 18MB of HDD space.

Leonard Nimrod commented on New iMacs First to Use Intel Montevina Chipset? @taoprophet420: The 3.06GHz chip is the X9100. Not a one off chip for Apple. The 2.66GHz chip is an unknown model number. That could be a one off, but more likely a repalcement for the 2.53GHz chip that Intel will also be offering.

The most important thing is that these weren't set to be released for over a month. And still, Intel usually can't supply Apple with enough chips for immediate sales. It looks like Apple's marketing engine has paid off nicely for Intel in the past with Apple-only chips for a set period.

• X9100 (3.06 GHz, 6MB L2 1066MHz FSB, 44W TDP) - $851 [May 2008 Release Date]
• 9600 (2.8 GHz, 6MB, 1066 FSB, 35W TDP) - $530 [May 2008 Release Date]
• UNKNOWN (2.6 GHz, 6MB, 1066 FSB 25W TDP) - $?????
• SP9400 (2.4 GHz, 6MB, 1066 FSB, 25W TDP) - $316 [May 2008 Release Date]

What Montevina offers over the Santa Rosa platform:

• WiMAX (which won't be enabled on the iMac)
• Hardware H.2.64 decoding
• Lower power usage (not a big selling point in a desktop)
• Smaller chipser and subsequent MoBo
• Blu-ray HDCP support on chip
• Can use Integrated GPU for Blu-ray playback
• Robson 2.0 (2nd version of Turbo memory)
• DDR3 RAM
• Intel GMA X4500 (3 versions)

Leonard Nimrod commented on Retailers Corroborate iMac Refresh Rumor For Next Week @joch: It depends on the chip model. While the current iMacs and previous MB and MBPs had 4MB cache across the board, intel's current chipline has 3MB and 6MB L2 cache.

Though, the speed increase does bleed out any 25% less L2 for most processes. Regardless, if you are buying the low end mac you aren't going to notice and probably not care about the different. Especially the inclusion of SSE4 which will be start being included to apps later this year.

But like Hippo said, you can save some money by buying the current Mac as the previous generation after the update comes out. Though you may have to wait a couple weeks for Apple to update their refurbished site.

Leonard Nimrod commented on Retailers Corroborate iMac Refresh Rumor For Next Week @Hiphopopotamus: What do mean by "just a switch to Penryn"? What other processor would they use? They have been using the Santa Rosa/Merom and so the next move is the Santa Rosa/Penryn.

There will be a bump in speed and HDD capacity, as the blog states, and perhaps some other tweaks, like an 8-bit monitor on the 20" displays.

@kibets: WTH are you talking about. iMacs offer a completely wireless solution, save for the power cable to the iMac.

Even if you go with the cheaper, default wired solution it's not 2 wires going to the iMac, only one. The mouse has a short USB wire that daisy chains into the USB keyboard. Why others haven't incorporated this as a standard is beyond me.

Mac enthusiasts prefer the more stable Mac ecosystem. Window enthusiasts prefer the well adopted OS. Linux user prefer the open source potential.

There is no one right or better system, but it sounds like you have your ass in System 7 days with limited applications and slim customization options. being Unix based there is nothing you can't do to the OS to make it your own and there plenty of quality free apps for this specific purpose. Many are great Unix apps witha simple OS X GUI on top to make the task a simple process.

Don't forget that the plastic case will also be thicker to accommodate the same durability of the aluminium back.

@flame500: That is form over function. I like the looks too, but the plastic back will help with the antenna, especially with the additional "fickleness" that occurs with higher bandwidth radio.

@big_marky_t: 32GB? Really? What cell phone do you have know that pales the iPhone 8GB capacity? 32GB in the space currently occupying the 8Gb and 16GB chips would be an increase well past what you are willing to pay. The prices have come down but not that much.
