The reason protest is so important is because without it, the masses are effectively blind to what is going on.
Inch by inch, bit by bit, for the last decade our personal freedoms have been eroded. We give a little here, sacrifice a little there, and before you know it, we're wards of the state.
One of the most effective ways of demonstrating the ineffectiveness of a system is show how easily the system is disrupted, and the repercussions.
In fact, your article is perfect example of the effectiveness of the protest. Were it not for the gestapo tactics of the TSA, you wouldn't be inconvenienced by your fellow passengers who actually value their constitution rights.
I don't really care what the excuse is. If someone touches my penis or testicles without permission, it's sexual assault.
It's damn cool, but is it really a better way to interact with a digital environment?
I think that remains to be seen. Part of the reason I like a pointer to manipulate on screen elements is because I can tell exactly what I'm interacting with.
@talkingstove: Nope, wrong. They can, almost literally, just flip a switch (what's the equivalent of a switch on a touchscreen?).
Apple is taking a completely different approach to getting apps on TV. Instead of creating a new platform to develop for, they're going to use AirPlay to deliver the display from the apps on your device to the Apple TV, while your iPod/iPad/iPhone becomes the dedicated remote control.
So instead of installing something on a new device, you just touch a simple control on the screen in the apps you already have, then look up from the little display on your phone to the big display in front of you.
Here in Portland, OR (a city known for it's 500+ licensed carts) there are several of these vehicles created by Northwest Mobile Kitchens. They're all incredibly nice, with stainless steel everywhere. Once you step inside it's like a professional kitchen...and the turn-key packages range from 20-26k. So for the same price as this, you could get a fleet of trucks and take the streets by storm!
As Mark 2000 pointed out, there are reasons some people might want this...
I for one don't want a nipple sticking out of my phone, especially one that I have to insert when i want to use it, so RedEye isn't really a solution for me.
The idea of hiding this in a closet with a bunch of gear so you never have to look at the receiver or the Mac mini while controlling it is what this is all about. Or not having to point at a device either...
I think it's great.
@crimsoneye Just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's not for someone.
@MarcusMaximus: Please post links to all the extensive testing that has been done to show that all of these things perform better on Android than on iPhone.
I'm all for getting a better smartphone, but from everything I read, when it comes down to real-world use Android still has a lot of work to do to make something that's usable for the vast majority of non-technophiles out there.
You're missing an option up there. Since Apple won't be letting us use the shiny new iPhone 4 on any other carriers, I'll continue to go the jailbreak/unlock route and keep using the latest hardware on the old EDGE network.
The one benefit to being on T-Mobile seems to be that no one else is using their data pipes, so I get pretty decent speeds. In fact, when in the notoriously bad AT&T areas (SF and NYC) I seem to get comparable speeds to my 3G brethren.
