No, it doesn't! This is not how money works. A dollar tomorrow is worth less than a dollar today. If you had $10k today, you could invest it and make more than $500/yr FOREVER. You will NEVER break even with this device; it is, rather, a mechanism for prying apart fools and money.

Pender commented on Mac Clone Maker Psystar Says Apple's EULA Violates Monopoly Laws, Wants to Challenge it in Court @pete: Really? Are you that sure that the DMCA absolutely preempts the antitrust tying doctrine? Because that would be quite the legal revolution, where you could tie any product by wrapping it with a nominal copyright protection system.

Lexmark tried a similar stunt, but it's never been tested in court and they've buckled every time it's come close.

Pender commented on Mac Clone Maker Psystar Says Apple's EULA Violates Monopoly Laws, Wants to Challenge it in Court The analogy to Microsoft is apt. It's true that Apple adds a lot of value with the closed box, but they could continue to sell a closed box for those who prefer a closed-box experience while allowing other, wilder types to buy an open box. And nothing antitrusty is going to prevent them from supporting only first-party hardware running first-party software.

Sure it would be a blow to their business model... but that's not really our problem.

Pender commented on Verizon Restores Voicemail of Man's Deceased Wife in a Story That is Touchingly Creepy I guess it's good that he got his recording back, but jeez. You're eighty years old, but that doesn't mean you have to give up on life. Loved ones die, and it's appropriate to mourn, but eventually you have to move on with your life.

Pender commented on Comcast Pulls an About Face, Teams Up with BitTorrent for Net Neutrality This is a good solution. If their bandwidth is limited, and if the market will not bear a cost per gigabyte model, throttle people who use too much.

Pender commented on Technosexual: One Man's Tale of Robot Love @chinesedentist: Fair enough, but you can empirically test the issue and prove them wrong. If you secretly combed through the gay people's browser history, you're not going to find porn with women in it, whereas this guy admits to looking at porn until his robot told him to stop.

Pender commented on Technosexual: One Man's Tale of Robot Love @mtopper: You said "Gay is wired in at birth, you say (and who am I to disagree) ... But this guys preference for a relationship that satisfies him (translation, with a non threatening, in fact non speaking partner, that does exactly as he wants) is a choice, which you imply he doesnt have to make. sounds a little holier than thou, if you ask me. (not that you asked)"

I know you're at your posting limit so you won't be able to respond. Nevertheless:

The difference is that he IS attracted to women -- he admits that he only refuses to look at porn because his robo-girlfriend evidently told him to stop. Perhaps no women will date him; this sounds like the most likely explanation since he claims that he was a virgin when he had sex with his robo-girlfriend.

That's the point: it's the attraction that defines a sexuality, not the ability to make the relationship work. Pedophilia is a sexual orientation that CANNOT result in a healthy relationship, but it doesn't stop being a sexual orientation. And many gay guys are so repressed that they can't or won't date another man. Some are so much so that they carry on decades-long, apparently happy marriages with women. Larry Craig is a good example. But he's still gay.

Pender commented on Technosexual: One Man's Tale of Robot Love I'm not sure I buy the equivalence he tries to draw between gay people and technosexuals. The former is immutable -- gay people have always been gay, will always be gay, and couldn't change if we wanted to, whereas it seems to me that, empirically, people only become technosexuals when they cannot make it work with people. That he had any desire to look at porn suggests that he is, in fact, attracted to human females, his later protestations notwithstanding.

One thing I will give him, though, is that he will face a lot of eye-rolling, discrimination, and general humiliation at others' hands because of his sexual and romantic life, and I think that in general we need to let all that go. If it's what he wants, we shouldn't make light of it.

Well I guess it's good to know that it has the RvLeshrac vote, but before I alter my lifestyle on the advice of a stranger over the internet, I usually like to see studies that empirically confirm his gut sense.

If you don't follow a similar principle, I recommend immersing your head in castor oil seven times a day until you do. In my experience, that has also prevented cancer, since I have never gotten cancer within four hours of immersing my head in castor oil. Think about it: I bet you haven't either.
