<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Turn OpenDNS into a Parental Filter]]> Keep in mind that users can get around these blocks in 2 ways:
1. Changing the DNS server in the settings of the computer they are using.
2. Type in the IP address of the site they are trying to get to.

With the first, I've found that with the Tomato firmware for Linksys routers you can set it to "catch" all outgoing DNS requests and redirect them to the router-specified DNS server. This will catch rogue requests and the blocks will still be in place.

The second is still a problem. Although, most websites don't use IP addresses in the links around their site. I think it would make navigating blocked sites a big pain in the arse at the least. It sort-of depends on what type of linking a site does.

Great suggestions, though. I really love OpenDNS and the services they provide.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on How Would You Like Your Inflation Served?]]> Our regular local mexican place just bumped their prices, too. It comes out to about a dollar more for the entrees we order at lunch every week. I can understand raising prices, but a surcharge? That's just bull$&*t.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Why Does Target Need ALL Of Your Driver's License Data To Sell You Wine?]]> Can't vouch for Target, but I can for Best Buy. I worked there from 1999-2001, during which time they implemented their DL mag-strip reading capabilities for checks. For checks over $25, a request was sent to Equifax for approval. The info sent included the MICR info from the check, the DL number, state, and birthdate. When I first started, all of the information from the DL needed to be hand-keyed into the register.

After they updated the system, we were able to merely swipe the DL and it filled in the information for us. It was faster and more accurate. It really cut down on the number of declined checks due to mis-typed DL numbers.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Broke Consumers Turn To Deep Discount Stores Like Aldi]]> We've had good luck with Aldi's produce, peanuts (in the jar), and other canned/boxed items. They have 1 pound rolls of ground turkey for $1 which is half of what our other stores sell it for.

We avoid the milk, though. Tried it twice and tasted nasty both times.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Applying Samsung Updates Will Void Your Warranty]]> We bought a Samsung plasma back in January. From all of the research I did on the Samsung TVs, I noticed that Samsung only released the firmware to individuals who had contacted support, so I was surprised to see it now freely available for download. Must be a new thing they're doing. Doesn't look like it's working out too well.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Broken DVD Rental Machine Charges You $75 for 2 DVDs]]> @stopNgoBeau: Because had the OP used a credit card instead of a debit card, it would be the company's money in the hands of the DVD rental company, not the OP's money. A simple chargeback is all that would have been needed. As long as you're responsible with them, credit cards are very useful and free to use (no annual fee, pay them off in full every month).

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Apple to Sell Movies on DVD Release Day, Confirmed]]> There's no way I'm paying the same for a DRM crippled, compressed and overall crappy version of a movie as what I can pay a couple buck more for the same thing on a tangible DVD.

Maybe Redbox has ruined me, but $5 for a video rental? Give me a break. With the high availability of freebie codes for Redbox means I pay nothing for movie rentals.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on AT&T And Others Make You Pay For The Privilege Of Paying Your Bill]]> @TheUncleBob: I was thinking precisely the same thing. It reminds me of Spaceballs where Lonestar tells the princess to take "only what she needs to survive". In regards to her hair dryer, she says "I can't live without it!".

I think there is a great value to the things we have in America and almost take for granted. Not too long ago, it used to be if you were stranded on the side of the highway, you were at teh mercy of passers-by or you were walking to the nearest gas station. Now, with cell phones, people can get assistance quickly, easily and safely. Without discounting the value of cell phones, it's sad that people have bought into the marketing and have allowed a perceived need to be created.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Florida Judges Tosses Out Thousands Of Bogus Toll Fines]]> I hate Auto-debit. All it does is compound the crap-pile in situations like this. I much prefer pushing money (through online bill pay) to companies rather than having them pull it out of my account.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on How Do You Make Sure You Wake Up?]]> I am the epitome of snoozers. At my peak, I had 3 alarm clocks, with #1 being a travel alarm clock, #2 being a 100+ dB Sonic Alarm clock with bed shaker, and #3 being a cell phone across the room. I still had to set them for an hour before I actually had to be up, just to counteract my snoozing.

I just bought a SleepTracker Pro watch. You give it a window of time and it senses when you're "almost awake" and sounds the alarm (and vibrates) at that time to wake you up. It seems to help most mornings when I get enough sleep. I still have the cell phone alarm set because, since the SleepTracker is relatively quiet and on my wrist (easy snooze), I still need a backup alarm.

I would have liked to get the Axbo (same concept, but separate alarm clock unit), but the USD->Euro conversion makes it too cost prohibitive: $387 incl. shipping. Pretty much double the price of the SleepTracker.

I saw lots of review videos online for the Axbo. I'm not sure if the sites paid for them, or if they were sent for free. If the latter, Axbo can feel free to send me one, too.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Calibrate Your HDTV?]]> I used the Avia disc to get my TV looking pretty good. Went to my old college roommate's place this weekend. TV was insanely bright. I asked him if he'd done any calibrating and he hadn't. "Torch mode" looks terrible, IMO, plus if you have a plasma, it can cause burn-in very quickly.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Redbox Shows Businesses How To Properly Handle A Data Breach]]> @Sys Admn: Bingo. I always figured that McDonalds had some sort of agreement with Redbox. The boxes pull in traffic to the restaurants. It'd be interesting to see the stats of people make food purchases with their DVD rentals (or vice versa). It makes sense that McD's owns them.

People that pay for rentals subsidize my free rentals, just like people that pay credit card interest pay my cashback rebate. I remember reading something on the InsideRedbox site that Redbox knows of the code listing and that they're ok with it; even like it. It's cheap advertising for them. They could easily crack down on the promo codes if they wanted to.

]]>
<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Thanks to the demands of movie]]> Yay for DRM. I don't think I'll be getting any commercial DVR devices if this is the sort of crap that they're shoving down consumers' throats. When will they learn that we want our content how, when and where WE want it, and we don't like having that dictated to us.

]]>
<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Redbox Shows Businesses How To Properly Handle A Data Breach]]> I love redbox, and I have yet to pay for a rental. We use free codes from [www.insideredbox.com] and be sure to get them back the next day before charges start. I figured that the cheap rentals had to be subsidized by the store where the machines reside (in our case, the local McDonalds), but I was both surprised and unsurprised to find out that redbox is partially owned by McDonalds.

<![CDATA[SpenceMan01 commented on Mute Your Computer on a Schedule with SoundAsleep]]> Want that functionality for you cell phone? If you have a phone that runs Windows Mobile, Spb Phone Suite can do it. I have mine set to go to vibrate mode M-F from 7:30am-4:30pm while I am at work.

What I'd like is to be able to configure "zones" on a map where when it senses that it's in a silent zone via GPS, it will automagically go silent (for work, theater, etc).
