"I've been doing an extremely informal experiment with my incandescents, and bulbs that are on soft-start dimmers (Lutron Maestro in my case) last 3x longer when undimmed (100%), and 5x longer when dimmed (<=70%). The jarring shock that bulbs get with a traditional switch turning on/off seems to stress it and shorten life."
