Comments from Zlevee Comments from Zlevee Zlevee commented on The Daily Show Asks Republicans If The Ocean Should Pay For Its Own Rape Kit I just want to preempt the inevitable republican who claims this has been "debunked":

...Croft, the former state representative who sponsored the law changing the practice, says it seems unlikely Palin was not aware of the issue...."I find it hard to believe that for six months a small town, a police chief, would lead the fight against a statewide piece of legislation receiving unanimous support and the mayor not know about it," Croft said....Tara Henry, a forensic nurse who has been treating rape victims across Alaska for the last 12 years, told CNN that opposition to Croft's bill from Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon was memorable. "Several municipal law enforcement agencies in the state did have trouble budgeting and paying for the evidence collection for sexual assault victims," Henry said. "What I recall is that the chief of police in the Wasilla police department seemed to be the most vocal about how it was going to affect their budget."

Zlevee commented on Pot, Meet Kettle: John McCain's Angry Insults Are Simply Absurd Tonight at the debate McCain is gonnna do something ridiculous. I guarantee it. He's down in the polls and this is one of his last chances to change it so he's gonna get all maverick-ey and do soemthing intended to be the showstopper moment. And I think that will backfire on him.

Thank God, we will watch him implode tonight.

Zlevee commented on If Sarah Palin Hates Smart People, What Does That Say About Her Campaign? I posted this quote from Sam Harris' article on Republicans praising mediocre intelligence (and theocracy) a while back but it's pertinent:

Ask yourself: how has "elitism" become a bad word in American politics? There is simply no other walk of life in which extraordinary talent and rigorous training are denigrated. We want elite pilots to fly our planes, elite troops to undertake our most critical missions, elite athletes to represent us in competition and elite scientists to devote the most productive years of their lives to curing our diseases. And yet, when it comes time to vest people with even greater responsibilities, we consider it a virtue to shun any and all standards of excellence. When it comes to choosing the people whose thoughts and actions will decide the fates of millions, then we suddenly want someone just like us, someone fit to have a beer with, someone down-to-earth-in fact, almost anyone, provided that he or she doesn't seem too intelligent or well educated.

Zlevee commented on Howard Stern, the self-proclaimed Those criticising him should understand his television content is not representative of his radio show. They just pulled the scandalous segments for the TV. If you ever listend to when he runs through the news for an hour every morning you'd probably think much more highly of him.

And as others pointed out, Beth has her own money already and continues to book new work, and yes they've got a prenup. If they do break up it'll because she's always wanted kids and he doesn't want more than he already has.

Zlevee commented on Dear Sarah Palin: Cute Wink, But What About The Issues? Also, I can't handle another "leader" who pronounces nuclear as "Nu-cu-lar". That alone should tell people this woman isn't top material.

Zlevee commented on Dear Sarah Palin: Cute Wink, But What About The Issues? Palin sounded very rehearsed and looked stiff like a kid in school play with stagefright. But she eeked out a pass -- now the McCain campaign can bury her in local appearances so she can't make big gaffes, with her image somewhat restored.

She did have the answers memorized well, and her "golly/gee/you-betcha/shucks/darn-right" folksiness might play well with some people (sounded like exaggerated acting to me though). The constant winking was a bit over the top.

But the memorization left her little flexibility. Which is part of the reason she ignored questions and kept going back to drilling and taxes.

Biden did very well. I'm sorry he had to be so restrained 'cause there was much to rip into, and he showed equal restraint when she was attackign him. he made very good points about McCain's un-maverickness, and the "I didn't hear a plan" remark about Iraq.

Zlevee commented on Talking Politics Is Now Okay At Work, Except When It's Not I totally don't believe in talking politics openly at work, or even in semi-privacy if there's a chance we'll disagree. However, I will discuss politics with co-workers in semi-privacy if I happen to already know that we share the same view. I think one has to speak to people one disagrees with in order to really think an issue through, but one should do that with people one doesn't work with.

Zlevee commented on The economy may be cratering, ...said Gary Cole, Playboy's photo editor. "The reason they do this is because they want the attention, the opportunity, the experience of doing it. It's not really for the money." Indeed! Everyone knows all those smart women who worked for years to make it in finance were really just waiting for the opportunity to display their bikini waxes to America.

Well Margaret, how else would you explain it? I think the dude has a point.

Zlevee commented on Apple Fires Back At Psystar: 'We're Sooo Not A Monopoly' There's a fairly unique set of tools on each platform. Sure they're more interoperability these days than there used to be but there's still enough of a difference that whole industries rely on software for one platform or the other, not both.

There is clearly a niche market, and there is a niche market monopoly in that nobody else is allowed to make hardware as an alternative to service that niche market, while everyone makes hardware as alternatives for the windows platform and its market, for the Linux platform and it's market, etc.
