"@Annalee Newitz: I'm pretty sure you're both saying the same thing - a sexual pressure against otherwise fit mates prevents good traits from spreading quickly, thus preventing rapid gene fixation at those loci, thus preserving genetic diversity. Also the evolutionary cost of male mate preference would seem to prevent sexual selection driving highly maladaptive traits (like peacock feathers.)"
