"Basic physics" and transmission line theory includes the relationship betweeen inductance, capacitance and reactance. As with any "recipe," varying these by how wire is positioned and how the conductors are arranged will have an effect on sound. The metal used for whatever reasons does as well, as does the dialectric used, and there are other variables that make a difference for known reasons. http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~jcgl/Scots_Guide/audio/Analog.html and this: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~jcgl/Scots_Guide/audio/skineffect/page1.html As for cable's pricing structure, that's a different issue. Hand termination is not cheap especially with certain materials and the distribution chain has redundancies. Too bad high performance audio isn't better appreciated. Economies of scale would bring costs down for all of it. I am happy to sacrifice and pay for a $120,000 turntable (though I got an industry discount it still cost me as much as a luxury car). You may think that's crazy but you haven't heard it nor do you understand how it was designed (by a team of academics in Australia overseen by an aeronautical engineer using "reshape" computer modeling), nor do you know the parts costs and the materials used. But I'd bet you dismiss it out of hand. Fine. You should hear what inserting different cables into a high performance audio system does before dismissing it out of hand.... I am quite confident I will be able to hear differences between my reference cable and Monster. However, Mr. Randi is apparently afraid to go through with his conditional offer to allow me use it and is instead using Pear's withdrawal as an excuse... -Michael Fremer
