There is some serious cognitive dissonance going on with the right wing on this issue. At some level, I suspect most of them realize this was their fault.
It was the right that pushed us into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But it has been those wars that have destroyed all the traditional arguments against women in the military and women in combat. Even though female servicemembers are "officially" not supposed to serve in combat, in practice they do routinely. Over 150 women have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two women have earned Silver Stars for valor in combat. There is no evidence military readiness has been compromised--on the contrary, the heavy presence of women on the front lines has been necessary for the military to do its job.
The men can deal with it. The women can do their jobs. Western civilization has not collapsed.
This is why I want to slap Rick et al. around with a mackerel. What's going on is that the Pentagon is revising the rules to reflect reality. Because of the need to have female soldiers dealing with female Afghan and Iraqi civilians on the front lines, the previous rule was routinely waived.
Rick & Co. are basically trying to pretend as if the last 10 years never happened.
