I'm currently using both on an unlocked iPhone through installer.app. Neither application are free but are offered as a trial/demo. I'd still like to see an easy to use app that enables Bluetooth DUN and for Apple to provide a software update to enable Bluetooth AD2P (Stereo Bluetooth). As well for Apple to update App Store to show the actual file size of the applications prior to downloading. After all not every carrier is as generous as AT&T or O2 to provide their customers with unlimited data ;)

The iPhone 3G doesn't support Bluetooth DUN. If Apple allows it in the future then we would either have to wait for a software update or possibly someone to release a user friendly app through the app store.

"Oh and don't even try to use the iphone without a plan! My friend had to settle for watching a video on YouTube. Paid $800, down from $1200."

While I don't agree with Rogers current data plan pricing or that they don't offer unlimited data plans I'm also intelligent enough to take personal ownership understanding if I use data on my device on the wireless carrier network with out a data plan that I'll be subject to pay per use data charges. Which by the way Rogers clearly indicates on their site, in the details in a wireless term commitment (contract) as well in the monthly invoices that it's $0.05/KB with out a data plan and a warning is received via sms (text message) the first time a user accesses the internet or uses data such as opening a weather application or downloading.

As for your other comments they have nothing to do with their wireless service or the article which is relating to Rogers iPhone 3G Voice and Data plans. Please try to stay on topic.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Canadians Write Angry Letter to Steve Jobs Over iPhone Plan in the Great White North]]> Has Rogers even considered that their iPhone customers may be subscribed to MobileMe? With it keeping constant sync a user's data usage may easily exceed the data usage limits imposed on Rogers current iPhone plans. Unlike their competitors in Canada, Rogers actually owns their GSM towers Nationwide so there's no rental fee and more reason why they can provide unlimited data for the iPhone plans. Even their major competitor Telus (CDMA carrier) has started selling unlimited data plans for smartphones (Treo, Blackberry, etc) starting at $30.00 just after Rogers/Fido announced they are going to release the iPhone on July 11. Have they considered that customers may not go for the iPhone and just port over to Telus for unlimited data on a different smartphone? I also don't understand why Rogers is allowing Fido a company they own to sell their iPhone plans starting at 7 PM and with the early evening option starting at 5 PM though for Rogers customers the evenings start at 9 PM and the early evening option starts at 6 PM. Both iPhone plans are priced the same for both companies though they differ both in evening usage as well Fido offering per second billing.

<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Video: Teen Brutally Beats Bus Passenger for iPhone]]> Such incidents are reasons why in case of theft we need the ability to not only track our iPhone but also the option to remote wipe the data. Since the iPhone 3G will have GPS and the ability to remote wipe data it will make it easier for the law to catch and prosecute idiots such as the attacker in the video. A reminder for those getting an iPhone to use the option to PIN lock your device. That way if it is jacked you don't have to worry about the carrier being only able to lock the SIM card.

<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on No Tethering for iPhone 3G]]> @camo_r:

I'm not an AT&T subscriber, I'm with Rogers here in Canada using the iPhone (EDGE version) unlocked though will be upgrading to the HSPA version on a 36 month term renewal when released on July 11. I guess here we're used to not being able to tether smartphones on regular data plans unless using the plan specific for data cards. I just realized AT&T has an unlimited data plan for $60.00 MSF that allows tethering for smartphones. That's far better then Rogers $65.00 MSF 1 GB data plan for laptop data cards. Though we do have a better data plan for HSPA video calling phones $7.00 MSF unlimited mobile browsing with 1 year free video calling or $20.00 MSF unlimited mobile browsing, unlimited mobile mail, 2500 SMS, 1000 picture/video messages, callid, voicemail, name display, who called and mobile backup. Hopefully Apple will provide an update to allow the feature since carriers like AT&T allow tethering data plans for smartphones.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on No Tethering for iPhone 3G]]> Why not just take out the SIM card from the iPhone and use it in a HSPA data card such as the Merlin X950D or just purchase a separate data plan for use with your MacBook using a HSPA data card?

<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Apple Introduces iPhone 3G Videoconferencing Kit, ZOMG!]]> @onlooker:

Unlike EDGE the HSPA technology allows streaming real-time voice and data so the caller could be either placing a video call or talking on the phone via bluetooth headset or speakerphone while surfing the internet. Here in Canada both Rogers and Fido offer video calling plans otherwise it's $0.25/video call minute on top of the customer's plan regular airtime rate. As for doing this over WIFI I don't believe it's possible at this time. UMA devices for T-Mobile's Hotspot@Home and Rogers Home Calling Zone don't allow video calls over WIFI, at least not yet ;)

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on iPhone 3G: The Stuff that Didn't Get Upgraded]]> Even though I'll be selling my iPhone to get the version 2 for HSPA and GPS I'm still a little disappointed. I was hoping Apple would of provided voice dialing, bluetooth stereo, video calling for use with iChat AV and conference calls with other video calling phones such as the Vision phones offered on Rogers HSPA network here in Canada. I was also hoping to hear that they would offer a 32 GB model but I'll settle for the 16 GB for now. There was no word from Apple if they will allow consumers to buy one at full retail price unlocked or if it's just allowed at subsidized pricing on a term with a voice and data plan.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Full Stevenote Video Online Now]]> Apple gives the iPhone HSPA to bring it up to the latest technology but then opts to leave out a video calling front-end camera. Then they compare it's browsing and email speeds to that of the Nokia N95 which is a device that does have video calling, not to mention a higher-end camera. HSPA is not just for the speed of data transmission but also the ability to stream voice and data at the same time. Everything else about the device I think is great but the lack of video calling makes me wonder if Apple really sees what the future of mobile computing and telecommunications industry is and what it can offer consumers. Rogers here in Canada has over 60% of the country coast to coast with HSPA coverage (over 25 cities and towns) and is expanding this to cover the rest of the country by the end of the year. In the UK and Asia HSPA is more used and the amount of video calling cellphones is more known. It's to bad Apple couldn't see this opportunity to compete on a level playing field by offering the iPhone version 2 with video calling.

An added bonus would be if they can extend the range of the 802.11n or offer an integrated GSM HSPA.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on AT&T Limiting iPhones to ONE Per Customer, No Cash or Checks]]> The restrictions are most likely only going to be in place for the first 90 days to help ensure that everyone wanting an iPhone is able to buy one and not be told "Sorry we're all sold out". As for not accepting legal tender I can't see how this can be legal for any business to do this. Apple doesn't have the same restriction for their other products which are more costly such as the MacBook. Anyway for those that don't have a credit card all they have to do is get a prepaid credit card to do their transaction with Apple.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Latest 3G iPhone Rumor Brings GPS, Mobile TV, Videoconferencing, into the Equation]]> I think they meant to say the iPhone will have video calling not video conferencing. This of course would mean that Apple is taking full advantage of the HSPA technology which can support streaming both data and voice at the same time unlike EVDO on CDMA networks which can only do one at a time. I do hope that Apple increases the resolution of the camera and makes it possible to record audio/voice for podcasting. It would also be nice to see a L.E.D. flash on the back camera to help in low light conditions instead of tweaking an image in iPhoto. Does anyone know if it will support UMA? <![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on iPhone Finally Announced in Canada]]> My hope is that Rogers will offer similar voice and data plans that other carriers selling the iPhone have already done. The pricing on the voice and data plans seem to be swayed by Apple and not so much by the wireless carrier. I'm really excited to be able to get this on Rogers network with out having to pay an enormous monthly bill compared to my unlocked iPhone that's currently on a voice plan for $35.00 + an email/browser plan that cost $65.00 (1 GB data). Also having it offered officially on Rogers network means I won't have to worry about issues arising during the manufacturer warranty which is voided when the iPhone is unlocked. As for Apple picking Rogers I've found their network coverage compared to Bell and Telus to be far better, less dropped calls and coverage in areas I need when I travel across Canada. Still surprised that they still don't offer coverage in the NWT but I never travel that far North.

]]>
<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on iPhone Finally Announced in Canada]]> @NicleT:

Neither Bell or Telus have a network that supports HSPA 3.5+ G for features such as video calling. While their CDMA EVDO networks are technically 3 G it can't support voice and data streaming at the same time. Currently in Canada this is only offered by Rogers and their other owned company Fido.

<![CDATA[imagine-engine commented on Question of the Day: Do Hourly Time Machine Backups Piss You Off?]]> I'd like to see Apple implement an option to schedule Time Machine backups by hour and date. As well I'd like to see Apple implement the option to set the maximum storage space alloted for Time Machine backups. Otherwise at least make it possible for Leopard's Disk Utility to partition the internal Time Capsule drive with out having to physically remove it and format the drive manually thus avoiding voiding the Time Capsule warranty. After all I would like to have 500 GB available to Time Machine and the other 500 GB for Final Cut Studio and Maya library/scene files. Then I could use an external connected hard drive (same 1 Terabyte storage size) to archive the Time Capsule internal drive in case of drive failure. Basically providing a RAID like solution.
